The setting of the house and overall location were beautiful! However, there were a couple of negatives about the visit. The first was that the VRBO listing showed a trout pond, but said nothing about the fact that you were not allowed to fish in it (which we learned once we arrived at the house). The second was that the house was filled with the personal effects of the couple who had lived there. From what I could glean from some Google-sleuthing, it is my understanding that the couple passed away about a year and a half ago and that the house was currently owned by the children of the couple. However, the couples' personal effects had not been fully removed from the house. There were clothes and jewelry in the closet, a fridge full of outdated food items, personal banking information and even medicine cabinets with medications in them. Though this might seem like a trivial complaint to some, it made myself and my family feel as though we were intruding as unwelcome guests into someone's home. For this home to be a successful vacation rental, I would strongly suggest that the owners remove the personal items from the home. I understand that it can be a difficult thing to go through a loved ones things after they have passed, but I feel that it is worse to allow strangers to traipse into a loved one’s home without first removing all of the personal affects. Additionally, there were some maintenance items that should be addressed - there was a light bulb burned out in the shower, a non-functioning drain in the bath tub and the kitchen appliances could use some upgrading. The final negative was regarding the check-out process. In my stays at other vacation rentals, there is always a notebook with the dos/don'ts of a property and what to do when leaving the property (where to take the trash, etc). The only "rules" I could find were, "don't fish in the trout pond and don't climb on the island off the coast". However, I will say that the property manager was very quick to respond to the 2 text messages I sent regarding whether the alcohol and food left in the fridge was available for our use and where the garbage cans were. All in all, the rental could be a great choice for a stay in Marquette as long as the above is addressed.
