Private Open-Air Bath and Gazebo!
“Machiya Sarabu” is a small 100-year-old two-story machiya in the Higashiyama area of Kyoto. Machiya is a historic house that has been lived in and protected by the people of Kyoto, and is basically built of wood, earth, bamboo, and paper. The neighboring machiya “Tsubara” produced this house. Sarabu is a little more modern, but with a Zen spirit. It has a simple yet authentic Japanese garden, and the private open-air bath is the best way to soak while looking out over the garden!
In a corner of the garden is a gazebo where you can meditate, read, or take a break after bathing, it is like a small tea room. Looking at the garden from here, you will find answers to your inner wanderings.
The bedroom has two beds and two sets of futons.
The kitchen is equipped with free drinks and simple cooking facilities.
Antiques and seasonal art are displayed throughout the house.
There are many famous temples and shrines nearby, such as Kiyomizu-dera, Kennin-ji, and Sanjusangendo, all within walking distance from the house. The popular Fushimi Inari Taisha shrine is also just 20 minutes away, and you can take a walk along the beautiful Kamo River.
Gion, with its many Michelin restaurants, is a 10-minute walk away, and a reputable supermarket is a 3-minute walk away!
The house is so quiet that it is hard to believe it is in the middle of a convenient city. Soak in the open-air bath after returning from sightseeing and you will be able to heal the fatigue of the day! You will be a Kyoto people by now!

Stellar experience from start to finish. This beautiful modern machiya offers a genuine glimpse into everyday Japanese living, while still feeling luxuriously special. The sense of harmony and balance throughout the house is genuinely restorative — it’s the kind of place that makes you breathe a little slower.The small garden is truly the jewel in the crown. Being able to soak in a hot bath in the privacy of your own garden, or sit quietly in the meditation room overlooking that peaceful green space, was unforgettable.The location is also ideal: surrounded by useful amenities, easy to get around from, and perfectly placed for exploring the countless attractions the city has to offer.And then, the hosts. Koji and Eri are the kindest and most thoughtful hosts I’ve ever had. They welcomed us with a full tour, explained every detail clearly, and made sure we felt completely at home. Nothing was left to chance. Their recommendations for local bakeries and restaurants were absolute gems — the sort of authentic, local knowledge you simply wouldn’t find on your own.We left feeling grateful, relaxed, and already hoping to return. We can’t wait to come back.

Hi, my name is Koji, I'm Japanese. My family and I were born and grew up here in Kyoto.

Although the machiya has gone by such a long time, it was been remained keeping quite original Machiya style.
I thought I'll give it a new life as a guest house.
You might be time travel to old Kyoto days!!!

I like car, motorbike, eating, drinking, etc.
My wife Eri speaks English. She likes eating Kyoto cuisine, seeing Kabuki, music(singing & listening soul music, Stones, Clapton, also B.Mars!...), Kimono, seeing Maiko-san&Geiko-San dance....of course we like, no, love Kyoto and traditional culture so much!!!
We’ll teach you Kyoto’s great sights and introduce delicious Kyoto restaurants!
We're waiting for guests at check-in in the house, and we give them many information as we can.
We hope our guests will have a fantastic days in my house in Kyoto！

The Higashiyama area where SARABU is located has many temples and shrines, and you can reach many famous places such as Kiyomizu Temple on foot from the house! Gion, famous for its geisha and maiko, is also a 10-minute walk away. There are many restaurants within walking distance (from Michelin starred to ramen shops), and supermarkets and convenience stores are also close by.
Only 10 minutes by cab from Kyoto station to the house, SARABU is in a great location！

Koji and Eri have been offering TSUBARA next door to SARABU since 2014 and many guests have had a special experience in their traditional Kyoto townhouse. We opened SARABU in 2024 and have taken care of our elderly guests by adding beds and a bathroom on the second floor.
There is a Zen spirit garden and a Gazebo, which is like a tea ceremony room, where you can meditate in peace and calm and recover from your travels.
A stay here could be the highlight of your trip to Japan.
