We rented this 2-bedroom cottage for two adults during Mini Lobster Season. After booking a non-refundable reservation, the check-in instructions revealed a rule stating, "No unregistered guests permitted on property." This restriction did not appear anywhere in the listing we booked, which only stated "No Events" & "Extra-person charges may apply."Because we wanted to comply, I asked the host before arrival whether 4 friends staying elsewhere could be registered as day visitors. She replied in writing, "Our insurance will not allow it." Since this policy was not in the listing, I contacted VRBO for assistance. After VRBO contacted the host, the host's tone changed. We were accused of "already trying to break our rules," told she would "not put up with any shenanigans," and that she would "just as soon" have us cancel rather than stay. With no practical alternatives during Mini Season, we agreed in writing to follow all rules. Two days later, I asked if just 1 couple could join us for dinner. The request was denied, this time citing previous problems during Mini Lobster Season—not insurance. We respected every rule, remained below the stated occupancy of 4, and asked permission before inviting 2 friends for dinner. Despite that, the experience became so disappointing & frustrating that we left a day early & forfeited 309 for our final night. The cottage also had maintenance issues, including a sagging bathroom floor with cracked tile and very poor kitchen lighting.
