Acido Dorado has a double life. If you websearch its name, you will find that it isn't just listed with overused buzzwords like "architectural" or "modern", but it is the real thing, and has a well-documented unique place in contemporary culture including international architecture press, fashion, art and culture projects. However, architecture is about people and experiences- not just photos. So, it is made available to visitors who enjoy it as a private, quiet and inspiring place that is full of comforts, experiences, and ideas that you will find nowhere else.
The single most valuable thing we offer, that even the most luxurious hotels can only pretend to, is authentic architecture with new ideas, that rewards the consideration that you give to it, and a truly unique place. Something magic happens when you find yourself in a place that isn't an imitation of somewhere else. There is a great sense of focus, and the time and place are truly your own, and your memories have a setting that holds forever.
The space-
Acido Dorado has two matching master suites with glass walls and private atria planted with ocotillos. Each suite has a large shower that is open to the atrium, a teak bench, and a floating mirrored vanity. The main room is glass walled on three sides with a full kitchen, and a large dining table. A seating area has a sofa, chairs and a stereo cabinet with an I-pod doc that drives a built-in 400watt 7 speaker stereo system throughout the house. The mosaic tiled reflecting pool and huge spa are basically in the living room, and the sunken back patio has built in seating, a fire pit, and a barbeque. Ornate wrought iron gates with thousands of metallic gold roses slide into pockets and disappear to open the living room from the front desert plains through to the back patio and rocky hillside. The house can be opened entirely to catch desert breezes but there is also an over-sized heating and cooling system for those few days when you need them.
Our idea of luxury is a bit different from most vacation rentals. The house is intended to feel like it is “yours” for the few days that you visit. It is super clean, well maintained and well stocked with all of the basics in the kitchen and fresh linens. It is not full of our coffee table books, our record collection, our favorite board games, and cloying knick knacks that express our personality or some generic “desert” theme. Our guests are people who have their own taste in all of these things and we feel that they appreciate not being sold a packaged experience. Bring your own favorite books and see how they seem different in this context, bring your own favorite music or better yet- make your own music. We are providing a truly unique architecture that is a background- but you are the foreground.
This house was constructed, and is managed and maintained by architect Robert Stone as an open gesture to share his handcrafted and conceptually layered architecture with people who have common interests. Guests are asked to please introduce themselves, their group and their plans. Our goal is to find a way to accommodate anyone who really connects with the place and wants to visit.

Other things to note-
We're located at the base of a mountain 5miles from "downtown" Joshua Tree but when we publish the address we get architecture tourists driving up the private road, so we keep it a secret unless you are a guest. The address noted on this ad is the center of town, not the house location- The real address will be provided upon reservation.
No pets
Photography restrictions- no production
No additional visitors or day guests
Wifi service provided by the local companies this far out in the desert is inferior to anything you are used to. However, all cell phones work very well at this location so if you set your device up as a mobile hotspot you'll get better service than any local companies provide.
Please understand that most of our guests do not come through VRBO - the calendar on this site may be incomplete. Please inquire to see if the house is a good fit for your plans and for open dates.
