この数少ない石畳の路地に残る風情溢れる町家は、訪れる方の心を「古都」へと誘うことでしょう。歴史的な東山エリア、桜の花が咲きほこる白川からわずか20mの静かな石畳の奥にあります。周辺には江戸時代の建造物や家族経営のレストランやお饅頭やさん、アンティークショップや骨董市、神社や寺院に囲まれ、美術館やオペラハウス、東の山々のハイキングコースと、どれだけ居ても飽きのこない特別な場所となっております。朝早く東山から昇る日の出や夕焼けとともに、穏やかな時を是非お過ごしください。
白川沿いを10分ほど散歩すると、そこは祇園の中心部、芸者さんやと舞妓さん達を目にして、洗練された京料理を味わい、そして、川のせせらぎとともに、静かな「古都韻」で眠りにつく、そんな一日の終わり。

地下鉄東山駅からわずか4分のところにあり、京都駅からもアクセスしやすい所です。
コンビニエンスストアや数軒のスーパーマーケット、京都の最古の商店街も徒歩圏内にあります。

この家の修復は2010年2月に完了しました。 キッチン、トイレ、バスタブなどの現代的な設備が備わっています。 二重の布団、すべてのリネンとタオルが用意されています。 家の中にはオーナーの趣味であるアンティークが飾れ、藤の咲く小さな庭があります。

The property was very nice and exactly as described. The check-in was easy and the provided directions were very thorough. It was in a great location and within walking distance to many restaurants, shrines, and shopping. The hosts responded quickly to all communication. I would highly recommend staying here.

Beautiful, Traditional Stay

Wife and I stayed here 6 nights. Great location to easily get to the Higashiyama Station as well as walk everywhere.Place is clean, comfortable, and cozy. Has the modern amenities you need while maintaining a very traditional aesthetic.

Great location; beautiful machiya experience

We had the opportunity to stay twice at Koto Inn during our month in Japan. We loved the location with proximity to excellent restaurants, beautiful gardens and temples. Very quiet location on a small pedestrian alley, yet close to the subway, grocery and convenience stores. We also appreciated Yoshiko's restaurant recommendations and her help in making reservations for a couple nights. Koto Inn had everything we needed for a perfect stay in Kyoto. We will be back!

A Kyoto calm Oasis

This is a beautiful Japanese residence that enables you to immerse oneself in the culture. I only wish had stayed longer! My friend did have considerable hip problems and one low level chair wound gave been very beneficial.

Traditional experience

This property provides you a traditional Japanese experience but also features modern convenience. As a person 50+, I was worried I would have some discomfort sleeping on the mat, but it was cozy and comfortable! Close to many sites and a metro station. Enjoyed my time at Koto inn!

Great property, great location

Koto Inn is a charming house that's full of historic character and also has all the modern amenities. It's in a beautiful and quiet neighborhood but is quite convenient to public transit. There are excellent bakeries, cafes, confectionaries, and restaurants within a few minutes' walk. David and Yoshiko are thoughtful hosts and the entire stay from check-in to check-out went very smoothly. Overall, this was the perfect home base for our vacation in Kyoto.

Charming - a piece of history

Beautifully restored, a privilege to stay in Koto Inn. It’s a charming neighbourhood, with museums and the historic Chion-in temple within walking distance. Plus Heian Jingu Temple with its beautiful garden. We also enjoyed dining recommendations by the hosts, esp the kaiseki restaurant Kakyo. Thanks again Yoshiko-san and David.

Machiya in Higashiyama

Koto Inn is a beautifully restored machiya close to the canal and Higashiyama station. My daughter and I stayed for 3 nights, with ample personal space ( important for teens). The house has a lovely atmosphere, and many practical utilities. The local area has a beautiful canal, many local bars, restaurants and cafes and is very close to many temples and walks. David and Yoshiko were great hosts, communicating helpfully and making many great suggestions.

Wonderful way to experience historic Kyoto

We were looking to experience Japan in a place other than a conventional hotel. This Kyo-Machiya was perfect. The renovated building was tastefully done, giving us a beautiful traditional accommodation. The garden was particularly special as we watched the wisteria bloom during our stay. It was a quiet neighborhood but close to buses and subways that allowed us easy access to the rest of the city. David and Yoshiko were excellent hosts responding to our questions quickly. Please do not hesitate to experience Kyoto in this special place…

Perfect retreat

By the time we got to Koto Inn, we were ready for a rest. It was the perfect retreat. While we processed our laundry in their combo washer/dryer, we enjoyed just hanging out. They have a library of books that provided down time entertainment while lounging on the tatami. You can open the shoji sliding doors to customize the view of their brightly lit Japanese garden. Just lovely. Thank you for preserving this bit of old Japan with modern conveniences. A destination in and of itself.

A true Japanese Experience!

David’s property is a lovingly restored Machiya is a convenient neighborhood in Kyoto. Quiet and peaceful at night, but minutes from great restaurants and temples. David was very responsive and provides a lot of helpful guides to support you during your stay. A pretty little garden awaits you upon wakening! Truly a gem. Restaurant suggestions: Bistro and Wine: literally 2 minutes from the house. Owners were very kind in helping translate the menu. French influence in a cozy little house. Itoh for a more upscale experience of a teppanyaki restaurant. Beautiful location next to the canal and Kobe beef was out of this world. They allow you to order a la carte which is great when your partner is a pescatarian.

Quaint machiya in a quiet, less touristy, area.

This is a fantastic property, beautifully restored, on a quiet pedestrian-only street just off of two more major avenues. Busses and the subway are just minutes away, making any part of Kyoto and beyond accessible. There are many dining and shopping options, including a 7/11 with an ATM just around the corner (this is incredibly useful in Japan, so don't laugh that I'm highlighting it). The hosts, David and Yoshiko, were very responsive and gracious and have outfitted the home with everything we could have needed. One bit of warning: this is a truly traditional townhome; there are no chairs, and the beds are thin futons directly on the tatami floor (my wife noted that she's had softer camping pads). Anyone with mobility issues or who truly requires a soft sleeping surface should take this into consideration. We were just fine, though after 10 nights, we were quite happy to move on to Tokyo and a Western bed :-). Anyone looking for old-school Kyoto charm and relief from the ever-increasing number of tourists should put this home at the top of their lists! Thanks so much to Yoshiko and David.

An oasis of tranquility in the heart of old Kyoto.

We spent 10 glorious days in Kyoto staying at Koto Inn over Christmas.Although on arrival the house was very cold, once the heat pump was turned on the whole house warmed up and even though some nights it got down to 0 degrees we were never cold. The house was exactly as depicted in the photos. Simply furnished yet very conformtable. The futons were great to sleep on, and kitchen had everything we required to cater for ourselves. The bathroom was the best we have ever had. Excellent pressure on the shower and the bath..well after a day of walking aound the city ..just what I needed.We loved the location of Koto Inn very quiet neighborhood within walking distance of restaurants, convenience shops, supermarket , subway, shrines temples....and so much more. The owners contacted us prior to arival and gave us very clear instructions on accessing the house, which was very easy. There is plenty of information available within the house regarding Kyoto, restaurants in the location and many books.Kyoto has so much to offer and see: temples, shrines, palaces, castles museums, markets, kabuki and noh theatres, and the most friendly people. Throughout our 10 days we were never at a loss as what to do...and we didnt see it all.We enjoyed returning to the tranquility of the inn at the end of the day, to drink a glass of wine, looking out over the small Japanese garden and talk about that days adventures.house

Best Kyoto Visit

We have been to Kyoto several times, but not since the COVID pandemic. And we have stayed at a machiya twice before, one about a five minute walk from Nishiki Market and one about a 15 minute walk to Kiyomizu-dera. We loved both of those places, but they both pale in comparison to Koto Inn. We knew that Kyoto would be crowded compared to our previous visits, but we didn’t really emotionally prepare for just how bad it would be. Luckily Koto Inn was the perfect sanctuary from the crowds and noise. The location couldn’t be better—2 short blocks from a Tozai Subway station and also within 2-3 blocks from multiple bus stops. And within walking distance of Gion, the zoo, Kyoto Museum of Art, multiple temples and shrines, the Philosopher’s Path, a Lawsons (where we went almost every day) and a 7-11, many restaurants. But the area itself is quiet and mostly residential. We stayed at Koto Inn for 11 days in late November/early December during peak fall foilage, so we got to know the neighborhood quite well. We have never stayed at a better location in Kyoto. Koto Inn has old world charm that is impossible to get In any hotel room. Yet has all the modern conveniences—a full kitchen, a modern Japanese bath, and Japanese bidet toilet. It’s really nice to have a full size refrigerator to store food and drinks for breakfast and a full size washer/dryer. I cannot give Koto Inn a higher recommendation. I’ll hopefully be able to stay there again within a year or two.

Beautiful house close to Gion!

We absolutely loved staying ing Koto Inn. It was so beautifully preserved and was a huge highlight for our Kyoto trip. It was comfortable and having amenities like laundry was very helpful for our trip. David and Yoshiko were excellent hosts, and were friendly, accommodating, and very knowledgeable. They have lots of information about the area and their binders were a great resource!

Koto Inn was a bit of a dream. The house is a beautifully restored machiya in a fantastic neighborhood...just steps away from museums, great restaurants and public transportation. Our host David was unfortunately not in Kyoto during our stay, but he was great about communicating before our arrival and was relatively easy to reach and responsive to our questions during our stay. I must say, as much as we loved this property, it is important to know that the house is not completely comfortable. There are no chairs in the house...the table for eating is low and cushions with backs are provided. We slept in futons on the floor. My partner and I are both in our 70s with some mild mobility issues. We adapted to the challenges but feel it's important for prospective tenants to know. It is fantastic if you want a traditional Japanese experience.

We had a lovely stay in this beautiful, historic machiya in Kyoto. We felt like we were stepping back in time when we entered the machiya. As western (U.S.) travelers, we enjoyed the experience of sleeping on traditional bedding, with a courtyard garden just outside our bedroom. It was lovely to wake up each morning to the sound of songbirds in the garden. Also, we came to appreciate the wonderful neighborhood in which the machiya is located. It's extremely quiet and feels more local than some of the over-touristed areas in which other hotels and holiday rentals are located. We loved going to the nearby soba noodle shop and mochi shop. And the canal near the machiya was gorgeous for taking morning and evening walks. This was a beautiful stay that contributed a great deal to our immersive experience of Kyoto.

A Quiet, Calm, and Incredible Kyoto Stay at Koto Inn

Everything about the Koto Inn is just wonderful, especially if you’re looking for a genuine taste of a Japanese world from days past. It really feels like traveling back in time as the interior is so lovingly decorated and holds everything necessary for a stay in Japan’s original capital. Not only is it peaceful in and around this part of Kyoto, but David and Yoshiko do a fantastic job of giving you all of the information and recommendations needed to make your stay perfect. I’d definitely stay again in the future (or is it in the past?).

David is an over 20 year resident of Kyoto. He has worked on Cruise Ships, in Ski Resorts and for the Hyatt Regency and is a recently retired Professor of English at a Kyoto University. Yoshiko has lived her entire life in Kyoto. She formerly worked in the Kimono industry and is an avid photographer. (all photos on this page were taken by Yoshiko)

After more than 20 years living in a number of different parts of Kyoto, Yoshiko and I have found the Higashiyama area to be our home. It is a truly classic old style Japanese neighborhood of old wooden houses, family run restaurants and shops, temples, shrines and historic sites. It retains its traditional flavor and is blessed with proximity to the green hills and peaceful waterways which grace the eastern sector of Kyoto. Women in Kimono and monks from nearby temples chanting for alms are still common sights in the narrow lanes of Higashiyama. We have tried to make Koto Inn a part of this serene and traditional area and hope to share its unique beauty with our guests.

Kyoto is the Heart of Japan and the Higashiyama area is the Heart of Kyoto. With its many historic sights, traditional architecture, Museum district, Gion district and quaint neighborhoods crossed by narrow lanes and gently flowing, cherry blossom tree lined canals, it retains and preserves much of Japan's refined traditional culture. After many years living in the Higashiyama district, Yoshiko and I were very fortunate to find this beautiful house, just around the corner from us. The restoration was done by local traditional craftsmen, temple carpenters and an architect experienced in seamlessly and discreetly blending traditional style with modern amenities. Yoshiko and I have decorated the house with the best from our over 20 years of collecting at Kyoto's temple antique markets. A comprehensive and updated guide to restaurants in the area is provided in the house and we are happy to make reservations for you.
