We are a rather well-traveled family of five, visiting different places in the world at least once, sometimes twice a year. Our overseas journeys took us to places like Australia, Costa Rica, Brazil, Peru and most of Europe. On our trips we stay away from resorts and hotels as we seek the REAL DEAL - we like to learn about places, people and their culture in their natural environment. In selecting places for our stay (where we will spend our time and hard-earned money) we rely heavily of reviews left by previous guests. It is for this reason that we feel compelled to leave this review which, by any means, should not be taken as a negative opinion about the country or the people we encountered. It is, rather, a stout warning to anyone who would like to stay at Top of the World Villa - the mosquitoes are a VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM there. The house does not have air conditioning (it really doesn't need one!) and therefore all windows are open practically at all times to induce some much needed breeze. However, there is not a single screen in any of the windows. The mosquitoes are having a wild feast at the guests’ expense and there is nothing anyone can do to prevent it. They are everywhere, all the time - biting you while you sleep in the bedrooms, under the table when you eat, on the couch when you watch TV, they are also ready for you when you go to the bathroom! Without any exaggeration, each one of us would wake up with 20-30 new bites every day, just to get few more stings during the day. We felt like we came there to feed mosquitoes. It is simply unconscionable to advertise a place for vacation, fun and relaxation without providing some basic protection from natural elements. This is, after all, the 21st century and it is so easy and inexpensive to deal with such a basic problem! The tropical climate will have critters which are a nuisance to people. We are pretty sure that the owner has netting in his home in Minnesota, so why would he subject everyone else to such a torment in hot Jamaica? This experience really ruined our vacation time and overshadowed all other positive aspects of the stay - which is really too bad.... The people are sweet, food really tasty (although quite expensive) and the driver is by far the most valuable asset of this little enterprise. Sorry, but unless something is done to remedy the mosquito situation, we cannot recommend this place to anyone.
