I cannot sing enough praises about this beautiful open-air house, it's lovely caretakers and the magical location. I have now stayed there quite a few times, and it has never been anything but perfect. Depending upon the season, it can be an adventure to get there (the road from the airport is not paved, which is part of the reason it is so unspoiled and paradisiacal). The house is located next to some of the best surfing beaches in Central America, but feels like it is deep in the middle of a tropical rainforest, with monkeys, scarlet macaws, toucans, and if you're really lucky, jaguars and anteaters swinging, flying, squawking, and slinking all around you. There is more life in this little peninsula than you'll find in a zoo!
The house itself is clean, comfortable, and safe, and is made for families or friends traveling together. It has private sleeping quarters with wooden floors and mosquito nets that feel like royal chambers. There are a variety of spaces that are made for spending time with others: if you feel like swimming or relaxing on a deck, there is a pool with adirondack chairs. If you'd rather come together around the kitchen for appetizers and wine, the central dining room/living room areas is spacious, comfortable and lively. If reading on a rocking chair alongside your traveling companions is more your speed, there is a second floor row of rocking chairs that are precisely at monkey crossing height.
Finally, the family that manages the house is top notch. Their home is close enough that they are always available as needed, but far enough away (about 100 yards) that you have your privacy. Their homecooked, fresh meals are lovingly and expertly prepared with local ingredients. Having lived in Matapalo for many years, they are central parts of the community, and are great resources. They know everything and everyone and can make anything happen. They run a tight ship, but are incredibly relaxed and laugh easily.
I would highly and enthusiastically recommend this property to my closest friends and family. In fact, I did recommend it to my parents, and we all spent a week there together last year. They were as enchanted as I was...
