We have a nice kitchenette apartment in a brownstone on the top floor with plenty of sunlight. In the unit there is a stove, sink, and small refrigerator. The bathroom is shared with 1 guest who resides next door. There is plenty of sunshine and it's very quiet at this location. This is a great location near all shops, transportation, and schools.

Convenient, good value for money, good host.

Nice building, perfectly adequate lodging for the price, neighborhood with all the conveniences and and acess to transport, responsive host. Crockery a bit worn out. Good value for money overall.

The bathroom is not connected to the room. They have an ac window unit for the room. Check in was difficult. The room is nice and comfty. Small. Good if you’re staying a couple nights.

Convenient and Affordable

This little studio was perfect for what we needed, a homebase for while we were exploring NYC. It's conveniently located close to the Subway. The bed was comfortable. No issues finding the place or checking in. Plus you can't beat the price! Would absolutely stay here again.

Very convenient located to major business areas and subway. The place was cleaned but still appears dirty, it’s a very old building that is not well maintained. The unit was described to have air conditioning but did not. It’s on the top floor of the building and it was sweltering the days we were there. We ended up booking a nearby hotel because we could not sleep comfortably. I would not recommend staying here in the warmer months. It would be fine for a short stay in the colder months.

Simple but effective

I just needed a night in the city and a bed and this worked. The sensor to get to the lockbox doesn't always react, but it was fine otherwise. Not far from a train station either. Really clean and met my simple needs.

Check in was good , but I didn’t know it’s a shared bathroom, the room was okay it’s a nice brownstone but the baby mice kept me up through out the night the mice crawled up the screen and I was eye to eye and couldn’t believe what I was seeing, this could be a great spot but please take care of the mice, I actually had to shine a light near the stove so they wouldn’t come out

Dirty

Very dirty, kitchen had no cutlery, electrical installation needs improvement, problems with the heating, blocked toilet, Wi-Fi code was not provided. The last two issues were communicated to the host, who responded quickly and resolved them.

AC barely worked, tiny twin sized bed on a cot, no toiletries provided for bathroom, poor communication. Would not recommend this stay at all.

Location is decent. Yes, Harlem may get specific late night and if you are too sensitive it may not be a good place to stay. For me who lived in New York before, proximity to midtown and central park was a deal breaker. Communication with host must be improved, however I received all the required check in instructions prior check in time and was able to check in no problem

Unfortunately the radiator barely gave off any heat in December in NYC, so the space was freezing. The kitchen sink was clogged and the shared restroom was not clean at all.

Not a great experience, but cheap

This vrbo was listed as a studio however the bathroom is not attached to the bedroom, it is a shared bathroom in the hallway. The apartment did not feel very clean and there was a mouse living in the room. The owner did not respond quickly, it took a day to get a response. If you just need a cheap place to stay and don’t mind these things, it wasn’t unsafe.

Not good

The doors did not close sufficiently (security concerns), no way to lock the door from the inside, and the bathroom is not connecting!! The window was also open upon arrival with no screen, anything could’ve gotten inside the room. Just not at all what we expected and we were not able to stay there, and we were offered no assistance from the property owner or VRBO.

Great location, great location

Spartan garret room in a brownstone. Charmingly dilapidated (if you like that kind of thing, which I do, or at least don’t mind.) No blankets or top sheet. Full stove but no pots except tea kettle. Shared bathroom in the hall was not indicated in the description. On the last day, I found a brick on the ledge outside the window—potentially very hazardous! I put it inside.

The first night I was there it was 17° out. The heat would not work and I had no way of getting in touch with anyone. My key was in a lockbox and the code would not open the lockbox so I had no way of entering an exiting the building unless someone let me in it was absolutely horrible because it was freezing outside and at times I was locked out at 30 to 45 minutes at a time waiting for somebody to open the door When I communicated this to the person they said they would help me and after several hours later, ask me if I ever got into the building

Pros outnumber cons

Pro’s Low price - clean - perfect location with multiple subways nearby -quiet building in a quiet neighborhood - kitchenette well stocked with utensils - lots of restaurants and lounges in the neighborhood. Con’s Information provided by host to access the building was inaccurate. Efforts to contact host unsuccessful and never got a response to messages. Two residents of the building were able to assist me. Toilet doesn’t flush properly. If TV works , i could not figure out how and no information about operating the TV.

Lovely Option in Harlem

I was most concerned when I saw reviews about lack of communication with the owner and a confusing check in process, because I've had a few negative experiences with that. Please be assured that the check in process was clear and smooth. The building is historic and has been through some things over the years, and it shows on the interior. However, the room is fully renovated and so clean, with some original details lovingly preserved. The room I had was much larger than the photos made it look and the building was very quiet. The bathroom could use improvements, ie it doesn't lock and the toilet is slow to flush; however the set up is such that nobody ever came in while I was in there, and it's fairly easy to keep people out in such an event. The location is very close to public transportation with the express and Metro-North trains a few blocks walk away. It goes without saying that it is also a huge value for the lower price.

Got the Bare Necessities

Honestly, it was fine. 3 stars for average in terms of comparing places I’ve stayed at in general, but I would put 4 stars for the price point. It was particularly hot when I came into New York, so I would’ve appreciated if the room was cooled off out of courtesy, but after cranking the window AC unit and fan up it felt alright. I also wish there was a microwave, but I knew what I was getting and was able to plan for that. I’m happy the room & bathroom was clean, because that’s a must for me. Sometimes the WiFi went in and out but since I wasn’t traveling for business that wasn’t a problem.It was a reasonably quiet neighborhood in Harlem. This is coming from a really light sleeper. I was worried about being suddenly waken up, and never was (except for the streetlight outside, but the curtains thankfully blocked out most of the light). I love New York, and feel comfortable in the city, so maybe I’m not the best person to constitute what’s safe or not. However, my philosophy is that anywhere in the world can be unsafe: just be smart wherever you go, especially in big cities. If traveling and you decide to stay here, I recommend packing the following: shower shoes, or slides when moving to/from the bathroom, a compact mirror for applying makeup and washing face (so you can do this in the room since it’s hot in the bathroom), baby wipes (I have GI distress), an extra blanket if traveling and sharing the bed with someone else.

A catfish.

It was dirty. I saw reviews that said this and I ignored it. Do not ignore this one. The bathroom is not connected. You have to walk out into the hallway after shower or the bathroom or brushing your teeth. There were fingernails on the chair. Me and my sister did not sleep under the sheets because it was so nasty. Do not recommend. The only nice thing about this is that it was easy access with the key to get into the building and it was a smooth leaving today. overall, one and a half stars out of five. I will give credit to the host and say that they did a good job communicating. Also, a random man entered our room at one point when we were sleeping in the morning, which was awful.Do not stay. also, the toilet does not flush. I do not know what was was going on, but it was crazy.

During the severe cold snap, the room, heated by a radiator right next to the bed, was EXTREMELY hot and dry. I was unable to sleep, and got a bloody nose from the dryess. I was unable to adjust temp or open window or reach someone at the provided phone number. In the morning, having been up all night, I decided to leave and get a hotel room. I messaged and asked for a refund of the remaining two nights. No response for 2.5 days then a very rude and angry response refusing to refund. I tried again to reason with them but got no more response. Additional issues: mold/mildew growing all over the ceiling in the bathroom. The window came off track when I tried to open it. Only one outlet in the whole space, already overloaded with plugs. I was expecting a funky old building for the price, so not too stressed about those things, but the heating issue was just not livable. I gave one star because of the owner's lack of communication, really rude, late response and unwillingness to refund the days I couldn't stay there due to the extreme conditions.
