The Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist (5-minute drive)
The Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist is a stunning example of French Gothic architecture and a central landmark in the city's historic district. Originally established by French and Haitian immigrants in the late 18th century, the cathedral has a rich history marked by several key events.
The first church was built on Liberty Square in 1799, but it wasn't until 1873 that the cornerstone for the current structure was laid. The cathedral was officially dedicated in 1876 but suffered a devastating fire in 1898, which left only the walls and spires standing. Remarkably, it was rebuilt, and Christmas Mass was held in the new structure by 1899.
The cathedral is known for its impressive architectural features, including towering spires, intricate stained-glass windows from Austria, and an ornate interior adorned with murals and Italian marble altars. The stained-glass windows, added by Innsbruck Glassmakers of the Austrian Tyrol, are particularly notable and were installed by 1904.
Over the years, the cathedral has undergone numerous renovations to preserve its beauty and functionality, including major restorations in 1959-1963 and 1998-2000. In 2020, Pope Francis elevated the church to the status of minor basilica, recognizing its historical and architectural significance.
Old Fort Jackson (12-minute drive)
Old Fort Jackson, located along the Savannah River, is Georgia's oldest standing brick fortification and a fascinating historical site. Constructed between 1808 and 1812, the fort was named in honor of James Jackson, a prominent Georgia politician and Revolutionary War hero. Today, the fort is managed by the Coastal Heritage Society and offers a variety of military exhibits and artifacts including a 9-inch Dahlgren cannon, one of the largest functional pre-Civil War artillery pieces in the U.S. and the CSS Georgia, a Confederate ironclad that sank nearby.
One of the key highlights is the daily cannon firing demonstrations, which occur twice a day at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM. During these demonstrations, volunteers dressed in period uniforms explain the process of loading and firing the 9-inch Dahlgren cannon, providing an interactive and engaging history lesson​.
