GOOD: Four of us stayed a week. The wood interior is lovely; the house is clean, airy and welcoming. The pool is a big asset; otherwise it's a trek to go for a swim. The bicycles are great to tool around. The loft is cute, ideal for a tween/teenager. Property manager Michael is competent and friendly. The BAD: we were robbed on our third night. Burglars broke the front door deadbolt lock, stole an iPad and cash from purses in the living room, and -- really awful -- entered the bedroom where we were sleeping to take another iPad that was charging, two other wallets, and my backpack. Thankfully, they threw my passport in the yard. The police were unhelpful. It was clear to us that getting a police report would be an ordeal (statements at the station, written request to San Pedro and then to Belize City headquarters, and after months you MIGHT get a copy). We didn't see the point in spending more of our vacation on a fool's errand. But, no police report means no insurance claim -- so we resigned ourselves to writing off our losses. It's not just Caye Caulker -- two of us were in Hopkins the week before, and robbers tried to break in but we came back early and surprised them. To be clear, we've traveled all over the world and took commonsense precautions as usual. We've never had this experience. SAFETY SUGGESTIONS: The owners were kind enough to credit us for one night. The lock was replaced immediately, but it was the same kind the robbers broke, so we were still a bit nervous. We made our own "security system" and put glass bottles behind the doors at night to make noise. We suggest a one-way deadbolt lock on the front door (accessible only from inside). Future guests can keep all valuables in their bedrooms and lock the bedroom doors. There's a safe in one closet but it's not bolted down, so it's still portable --it should be secured. Motion sensor lights are a good idea. OTHER SUGGESTIONS: lights over the cooking range/sink, as it's hard to see what you're doing. The upstairs room has the private bath, ideal for a couple -- but it has twin beds. A queen bed there would be great.
