As our guest at Las Nubes you will enjoy a distinctive luxury accommodation: your backyard is five acres of natural space with marked trails lined by fruit trees, flowers and organic vegetables, an oversized heated pool, soaking tub, sauna and cold punge. No other guests will be on the property.
You could easily arrive and never leave the property, filling your vacation time with a range of activities from relaxing and pampering (massage and other spa services available for special in-house reservation} to energetic and educational (it's a perfect landscape for birdwatching, insect cataloging and monkey-spying).

At 1033 meters (3400 feet ) , Las Nubes is one of the highest points in the area with spectacular panoramic views in all directions. You have a front row seat for both the morning sunrise to the east over San Jose in the distance; and to the west, the sun-sational setting over the Gulf of Nicoya. Watching the fog form in the valley below and rise in waves of clouds towards Las Nubes, and finally engulfing the whole property for a time— is surreal.
At Villa Cumulus you’ll wake up in an antique four poster bed hand carved in India, with views out toward the Gulf of Nicoya. Your villa will be stocked with fresh eggs, bread and butter and fruit and freshly ground coffee from the farm. Throughout your stay you can pick your own tropical fruit or allow our caretaker to pick it for you. You can even roast your own morning coffee from Las Nubes’ hundreds of trees.
At the highest point of the property there is a pavilion we call Nimbus. It's the best spot to be for the sunrise and ideal for morning stretching and exercise or quiet meditation.
Villa Nimbus, a mini, sod roofed Villa with views in all directions is available; as is Villa Cirrus at the heart of the property, near the pool, and with two bedrooms. (Ask for details about rentals of more than one Villa)
Then you might spend the day around the pool, swimming and reading, in and out of the sauna… or relax in the soaking tub at the edge of your villa garden. You could schedule a massage at the pool or at your villa. Or you might explore the trails on the property doing some light climbs.
From any location at Las Nubes, the sunset is an incredible experience. The garden patio at Villa Cumulus is a front row seat. Guests at Cumulus can also reserve use of the large Sala at Las Nubes for a sunset watching cocktail-hour.
The nearby town of Atenas (700 meters/2300 feet) was designated Best Climate in the World by National Geographic, but honestly, nothing compares with the always temperate and comfortable climate at Las Nubes.
There are overhead fans in all the Villas, and AC is never needed. Cooler evening temperatures makes sleeping a dream, especially in our luxurious linens and bedding. We pamper our guests with complementary bath and shower amenities.
DINING
Cumulus is well appointed for your personal culinary preparations. A gas cooktop, refrigerator, toasteroven, blender, coffeemaker, coffee grinder, french press and espresso maker, and a full compliment of cookware, glassware and utensils. The kitchen is generously provisioned with herbs and spices, teas, and condiments.
If you prefer, by special arrangement, we can do the grocery shopping for your whole stay.
Water is from our own well at Las Nubes, and is safe and refreshing to drink from the tap.
By special arrangement, an elegant evening meal can be scheduled in the Sala near the pool. A chef will arrive to prepare and serve cocktails and a dinner designed by you and our management staff. Or schedule a pizza night at the wood fired pizza oven.
A 10 minute drive to Atenas gives you several options for dining out… (Tica/Polish/Indian/Thai/Vietnamese/Pizza/ Sushi/Steak/Vegan/Seafood). There are also bakeries, coffee shops, gourmet foods and wine, and a farmers market two days a week. Several restaurants provide carry out and we can suggest a driver to bring your dinner to Cumulus.
DAY TRIPPING
For guests who want to see more of Costa Rica, you are an easy drive to the beaches, ziplines, hot springs, cloud forests, ATV, horseback riding, sailing, hiking, river rafting, fishing, coffee farms, zoo, waterfalls, wildlife tours and more.
Our management team can arrange for your transport from the airport (SJO is 40 minutes away) and for a rental car to be delivered to your Villa.
Having your own transportation gives you more freedom, but
if you prefer, day trips and tours can be arranged for you.
We also have two taxi drivers on call for any town trips you want to make.
The entrance gates to Villa Cumulus and the larger property of Las Nubes are right on a paved road and the driveways are short and sweet…no torturous steep climb.
EXTRA DETAILS
Rental of the whole Las Nubes property…all three Villas at one time…Cumulus, Cirrus, and Stratus… is also available.
If you are renting only Cumulus, the other two villas will not be rented. so you will not share the property with any other guests. It is possible that the owners may be present in another villa during your stay, but we will respect your privacy and provide 24 hour Concierge service!
On site parties and additional guests are prohibited.
While Cumulus is very accessible to handicapped guests, traversing the complete property and climbing the short hill to the pool may be a challenge. Please consult the photos and message us if you have any questions.
For security we have two automatic property gates. You will receive your own remote. Our caretaker and his family live on the edge of the property and Bobi, our friendly guard dog patrols at night. Though close to our neighbors in Jesús, Barroeta and Alto de Monte, Las Nubes is a large private gated property.
Though not specifically prohibited, guests should seriously consider whether this is a good choice for children. There are inherent dangers staying in an open, natural environment such as Las Nubes and there is the chance that young, immature persons (like children tend to be) will fall or hurt themselves. Please consult the photos.
With the change of seasons comes the change of flying critters. Cumulus is screened… but so as not to obstruct the views, windows in the Sala at Las Nubes are screenless. Guests should take this into account, especially at night. At dusk it is wisest to shut the glass windows if it is a flying insect season and always turn all lights out when leaving a room or building.
High speed wifi service is available in all the Villas.
Alexa is available on Echo Dots in all villas and at the pool.
For guests renting the full property, there is a Samsung Frame TV in the Sala which has Netflix and Amazon Prime. There is no cable TV.
