It is very difficult to accurately describe just what a lovely stay we had at Nile Lodge. As we drove through the pillars and approached this stately home, we were immediately impressed by the beautiful garden landscape, spacious curved driveway, and elegant facade of this fine historical home. As we exited our car, we were greeted by our smiling welcoming hostess Maire who escorted us into the hallway lined with reminders of Nile Lodge's history, then into the lovely living and dining rooms symmetrically placed on either side. Maire pointed out the many amenities (wonderful linens, stemware, serving pieces, cellphone for directions and local calling etc.), while touring us throughout the home and secret gardens, as Mary Anne put the finishing touches (including an array of freshly cut flowers) to prepare for our (slightly early) arrival. The kitchen was well stocked with fresh bread, cheeses, Guinness and more. The house is charming and so well appointed it has everything you can possibly need to cook and serve an enticing meal, to popping a cork and sipping wine. Each of the king size beds were comfortable and beautifully dressed with gorgeous linens. The ensuite bathrooms gave each couple plenty of privacy. The gardens not only afforded privacy and beauty, the herb garden allowed us to prepare savory meals with fresh herbs. The house is a perfect distance from the heart of town, walking to Galway Bay, and exploring Salt Hill. Restaurants, pubs, and music venues are within a very comfortable walking distance, and the grocery is just a short walk down the street. There is nothing we wished for that was not provided. An added treat is Maire. Not only is she a gracious hostess but a treasure to enjoy. Our fellow travelers were celebrating a 41st wedding anniversary, and Maire surprised us all by surreptitiously preparing and setting out a silver tray adorned with flowers and treats. To our delight, Maire accepted our invitation to join us in the light flooded living room while we savored her dear anniversary surprise. Maire is warm, engaging, and willing to share stories of Galway, Ireland, the history of Nile Lodge, and more. We felt as though we found a long lost friend. Maire, thank you for welcoming us into your home with such open arms and generous heart.
