This is a nice house, in an excellent location with easy access to fruit stand, groceries, and spectacular beaches. This was our home Jan thru Mar, 2016. The house faces a small river, which provided hours of entertainment watching colorful birds and animals drawn to the water. Monkeys, sloths, otters, and agoutis were regular visitors to the neighborhood. Blue Morpho butterflies and hummingbirds sailed through the house daily. The veranda was a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the beauty. The open design of the house, and surrounding tree canopy, provided good air flow with plenty of cooling shade. One morning we had the unlikely experience of a baby 3-toed sloth dropping from the ceiling rafters onto the floor of the veranda. Luckily uninjured, somehow he and mother had become separated during the night. The nearby Jaguar Rescue Center took the baby with them, after recording it’s squeals which the mother would recognize. We played the recording daily through a satellite speaker, watching the tree canopy. After two weeks a sloth appeared that was very interested in the sound. They returned with the baby, and agreed this was mother. Using a stick to lasso rope over a branch, they placed the baby in a straw purse and raised him 20 feet into the tree. The mother climbed down to the purse, reached down and scooped up her baby. She helped him onto her back, gave us all a long look (smile?) and moved back up into the canopy. An emotional, thrilling experience none of us will forget. The house was cleaned weekly, and the property managers were quick to resolve problems. WiFi was excellent. The condition of the house was somewhat less than we expected, and one of two long-term rentals that share the property was quite close to La Casita and it’s shower/bath house. Puerto Viejo is a 30 minute walk, or 10 minute bike ride away. Bus service is also available. Our favorite destinations were Mariscos Mopri fish market, Don Hugo butcher shop, Gustibus bakery and Deelite gelato. The Saturday farmer’s market is great for local products, and to practice your Spanish skills. Our 3 months flew by, and it was a great experience. We will definitely consider La Casita again, on future trips to this area.
