Our family rented the cottage at Toddy Pond Farm for a week. I read all the other reviews here, and I agree with them, so I won't repeat all the (true) things that have been said about how great the accommodations are.
What I will add is that this was truly one of the best vacations the family has taken. The kids haven't stopped talking about wanting to re-book it for another stay, for one thing! It's true, this place is great to take the kids, but it's much more than that. The cottage is about 500 feet away from the farm, separated by pasture, so it would be easy to just hide out in the cottage for a more secluded, relaxing getaway without kids. So, I wouldn't just limit this to a "kids vacation" kind of place.
Greg, Heide and their boys were wonderfully accommodating and engaging hosts. They're clearly very passionate about sustainable family farming. We learned a ton about where our food comes from and how it gets to our plate, as well as things we can do to improve its quality. At the same time, while they gave us as much education as we asked for, they were never preachy in any way. Kept things very interesting for sure. Just very engaged in their work, and happy to answer all the questions we asked, demonstrate things, have us help as desired, etc. They are clearly "people people" who genuinely enjoy the farm guests.
The cottage was extremely clean, and fully stocked with sheets, towels, (organic and natural) cleaners and soaps, etc. It was easy to move in and feel at home. There are two stories, with a master bedroom on the first floor. Second floor has two bedrooms, plus a curtained sleeping nook that isn't really a full room, but was lots of fun for our 12 year olds. WiFi was OK but a little slow; there's no TV.
Again, you really can do as much, or as little, of the farm involvement as you like. There's kayaking and swimming (warning: you'll need to walk about 1/3 mile on a wooded path to get to the pond ... which is pretty big, more like a lake ... and it got pretty buggy on the walk. It's also uphill coming back). Belfast is an interesting town with restaurants, bookstores, etc. about a 20 minute drive away. Camden and Rockland are also nice towns, more like 50-60 minutes drive.
In short, this place is a good choice for many types of vacationers, from those with young children, thru teenagers, to older couples or groups without kids. You can be as active, or as laid back, as you like here. I can't say enough good things!
