Unique and Off-The-Grid Tipi Rental on Chloe's Lake in Saugerties, New York
This unique tipi rental is in an off-the-grid location on Chloe's Lake in Saugerties, New York, and can
accommodate up to four guests. The tipi is 18 feet in diameter and is handmade and painted by the artists
at Nomadics Tipi Makers, a company based out of Oregon.
===============================
Almost everything is custom-made to the highest standards: the tipi and liner, the bed and folding futon,
the solar reverse painted lamps, the fireplace, and the firescreen. The mattress in the tipi is a double, plus
there is a futon couch that folds down for when there are more than two people glamping. The futon is a
twin – it can accommodate 2, but that is snug.
You don’t need a car to come to this wonderful 23 acre paradise! From New York City there is a bus to
Saugerties New York. The bus stop is 5 miles from the property, so the taxi fare is modest. Search for
“Stagecoach Taxi” and you’ll find the phone number. If you prefer, you can take the train to Rhinecliff,
New York, but the taxi will cost more, as that is 20 miles. There is a small deli / market within walking
distance – 1 mile. The market on Tuesdays offers Pakistani dinners that we recommend. Some days they
prepare Mango Lassi, highly recommended!
On the property, there is a "Tipi Room" about 100 feet from the tipi for glampers’ use. It has a
refrigerator, sink, microwave, and an outdoor shower with hot and cold water. It has electric so one can
charge devices. For the tipi, there are solar electric panels set up that power a CFL lamp, the primary light
source is candles, which we supply.
The well water is potable. There is a second well with excellent water that is shown on the map we send.
The property is safe and free from any dangerous animals. There is a lot of wildlife in the area, including
wild turkey, great blue heron, geese on migration, green heron, ducks, foxes, deer, beavers, and
occasionally bears. Though the bears are not dangerous, it is advisable not to leave food or anything
outside that would attract bears.
The lake includes sunnies and bass for fishing.
The “swimmable-ity” varies with the time of year. For the hosts, it is swimmable whenever the water is
warm enough. They often use flotation devices, such as little inner tubes or rafts one can buy for a few
dollars.
Sometime starting in June, watermeal grows which floats on the surface of the water. Watermeal is
formed by pinhead sized leaves that float on the surface of the lake. When there’s a breeze, they blow to
the edge of the lake and the surface is cleaf. If there is no wind, they spread over the lake. The lake
maintains a thermocline all summer, that is, while the surface water gets warm, the deeper water, a foot
or so below the surface, stays cool, having a thermocline is one of the differences that distinguish a lake
from a pond. If a body of water is not deep enough, it cannot keep the thermocline.
