This cottage was perfect my needs. It did rain unexpectedly in this area almost every day, often just for a short period of time, and in the evening, it was a bit closer to the other house on the property than I had perceived. However, the covered patio provided a private outdoor area and shelter. Also, there are ants, t, but they're small and predictable. Bedding was comfortable, closets and supplies excellent, kitchen adequate and living area comfortable. For outdoor recreation there were a few chairs, barbecue, many towels, insulated bags available, and an outdoor shower. It's not a long ride if you want a change of weather in Maui. Very quiet and peaceful at night. Great star gazing when there's a new moon.
Haiku is a very small town, but conveniently within walking distance of a couple of restaurants (had dinner at one) and a very nice country grocery store. I enjoyed the general quietude of the area. It's also a shorter ride to Haleakala than from other areas, and you are at the start of the Hana Highway. The Temple of Peace is nearby (walkable). They have a small health spa there. I wasn't there for their Sunday service, though I think I would have enjoyed it. The Temple also hosts a robust Kirtan on (most?) Tuesday evening if you have an interest. Paia is nearby and very lively ... allow extra time to get through the traffic light at the main intersection.
I had no need to contact the hostess, but had her contact information; she was available 24/7.
