Nice small studio, clean and you can't beat the price especially during the high season. But, just be aware, you get what you pay for and not in any bad sense, its just pretty small and despite there being a toaster and microwave there are no other cooking facilities. There is a nice big fridge which is really a good perk for all your beverages! Don't count on doing anything other than warming a cup of coffee up because there is next to no counter space and the only sink is in the bathroom. The trash cans are also tiny, like mini bathroom size so plan on taking your trash to the dump down the road when its open. I have always had a kitchen or at the least a BBQ or hot plate so having none of that is pretty tough especially when the closest food is at the Kaimu Store (limited deli) or back in Pahoa. Kalanai is right next door but I have found that they are less welcoming than they use to be.
About the BBQ, its a charcoal stone thing that looks like it hasnt been used in years, its also very close to the parking for the owner, I don't think I'd be comfortable using it.
You do have a small lanai with a chair that definitely gets most of the sun all day so that is nice, otherwise the front lanai (common area) is covered so if you like shade, its good.
The A/C works sometimes. It always sounds like its has a lot of water inside of it and is struggling to overcome that. If you open up the windows you wont need A/C at night, its nice and breezy but when I checked in I was told to keep the windows and sliding door shut to keep bugs out. Hawaii isn't particularly buggy and I didn't see many bugs, only gekkos. Anyway, I think if you go in not planning on cooking and know that this is a small space in a big house with three rentals inside......its fine. The addition of a sink would make a big difference, its not easy washing plates and cups in the bathroom sink.
**Bring cuttlery, there is none. There is however other cooking/serving utensils, plenty of them which is odd since you can't cook anything.
Overall, enjoy the value and enjoy Puna!
