Seafield Tower History Circa 1876

By the mid-1880s, the sand dunes of Glenelg's esplanade had long given way to the summer residences of the prominent and wealthy of South Australia. Previously known as Albert Parade, and then Seawall, South Esplanade was once a promenade of magnificent Victorian mansions and summer gardens. With time, these mansions slowly began to occupy land beyond the dunes morphing Glenelg's streets into a suburb of character and charm.

State Heritage-listed Seafield Tower was the first of its kind built along the esplanade. It was designed as two self-contained, 15 room summer residences for Sir Henry Ayers and Sir Thomas Elder, when both were in their late fifties. Ayers made his fortune from the Burra Copper Mines that secured the wealth and future of the colony of South Australia. Uluru - Ayers Rock in the Northern Territory is named in his honor. Elder was a pastoralist, businessman, philanthropist and politician. Ayers inhabited the northern side and Elder the southern. Each residence had a separate staircase to the tower, but the landing was communal.

Local bus services also operate frequently throughout the suburb and nearby coastal areas.

Driving – A car gives you the freedom to explore further afield. Adelaide Airport is only a 10-minute drive, while attractions such as McLaren Vale wine region, Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills, and Fleurieu Peninsula beaches are within an easy 30–45 minute drive.

Cycling & Walking – Glenelg is flat and highly walkable, with bike paths connecting to neighbouring beach suburbs like Brighton and Henley. A relaxed coastal cycle or evening stroll along the esplanade is a must.

Neighbourhood
Set in the heart of one of Adelaide’s most iconic coastal destinations, this property places you right on the sought-after South Esplanade of Glenelg. Known for its vibrant seaside atmosphere, Glenelg offers the perfect balance of relaxation and activity. Step outside to enjoy sweeping ocean views, morning walks along the beach, or a sunset dip in the calm waters. Just a short stroll away, Jetty Road is lined with cafés, restaurants, boutiques, and bars, making it easy to enjoy both casual bites and fine dining. The area also boasts family-friendly attractions such as The Beachouse amusement centre, as well as the historic Glenelg Jetty.

Shared washer and dryer are coin-operated. Extra cost. As it’s located in a common area, we kindly suggest locking the laundry door while in use and after use to maintain privacy, safety, and consideration for others.

Parking: Seafield Towers Glenelg Apartment offers convenient parking options to suit various vehicle heights. We provide a minimum clearance of 2 metres for standard parking. For guests with higher vehicles, there are three alternative parking spaces available that are not under the carport. These spaces are either opposite the carport or located under the outside stair area, ensuring ample space for larger vehicles. Please note that the parking area is no longer numbered, allowing for more flexible parking arrangements.

Additional Parking: There is a couple of unnumbered car parks opposite the carport which are first come first serve subject to availability.

Security: At Seafield, safety is paramount. Our property features top-of-the-line smoke alarms linked to the fire department & a comprehensive fire system service.

Kindly be advised that due to the historical nature of the building, none of the units are wheelchair accessible. Four units require stair access to enter, while the remaining two feature angled entryways with limited turning space, making wheelchair manoeuvrability challenging. There are no ramps or modified access provisions in place.

Convenient location by Glenelg beach

Basic property with no frills. Tired and in need of renovation. Peeling paint in the bathroom. Front door to the esplanade hard to open. Chairs and sofa saggy. Have already submitted a more detailed review to Unwind holidays which presumably you have seen and one of the frustrations with this booking has been the number of agents involved - VBRO, Stays?Unwind, a ‘host who we didn’t see

Can't beat the location but very Unclean, Shame

Overall, I do not recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: Can't beat the location. I had paid for 2 adults and 2 children. We were given two bedrooms, even thoght the ad read 'sleeps 6'.However there are some obvious issues with the property. There is no air circulation – the windows themselves don't seem to open - and several evenings were stiflingly hot. The window sills themselves I had to wipe clean and were littered with old screws and hinges. Unsightly and a choking hazard. For this reason, we had to move the cot in to the main/living area. Which meant while baby slept, that area was out-of-bounds during the day, and at night, TV had to be on very quietly. Not ideal since it is the designated living/dining area.Speaking of air-circulation, the other bedroom with the bunk bed in it also had no windows and no fan. It was uncomfortable overnight.The place was very unclean. The only window in the living/kitchen/dining space to allow the ocean breeze in was filthy. It was so dirty my toddler who stood up holding the window sill was covered in dust and dirt.The lino in the kitchen space was also dirty and spotted with stains from previous guests. Outside, perhaps even some simple fake roll-out lawn to cover the open dirt place (which was still littered with builders nails, screws etc) would have made the place 10 times more appealing and enjoyable to be at.

A great stay

This property is in a fantastic location in Glenelg, right on the beach and in the heart of the town. Loads of space for family of 4. Well equipped kitchen. Great WiFi and Netflix available on the TV. A few strange noises from adjoining property in middle of night and beds not that comfortable but ok for a short stay. Good communication with host to resolve an issue.
