The Neighborhood:
Grand Lodge Crested Butte sits at the base of Mount Crested Butte resort village, immediately adjacent to the Red Lady Express lift base area. The surrounding base village includes ski shops, ski rental, casual restaurants, an après-ski bar, and the Adventure Park (summer chairlift rides, mountain biking park, hiking trail access). Historic downtown Crested Butte — Victorian storefronts, art galleries, fine dining, craft breweries, live music venues, and seasonal farmers' markets — is 3 miles north (6–8 minutes by car or free shuttle).
Season-by-Season:
- Winter (Nov–April): Skiing, snowboarding, après-ski crowds, holiday events.
- Spring (May–early June): Snowmelt, hiking trail openings, fewer crowds, wildflower emergence.
- Summer (June–August): Alpine hiking, mountain biking, Kebler Pass scenic loop (35 min), fly-fishing, off-leash trails.
- Fall (September–October): Aspen peak color (typically late September), ideal hiking weather, low crowds.
Air Access:
- Gunnison Valley Regional Airport (GUC): 30 miles south, ~45 min drive. Regional flights to Denver and seasonal hubs.
- Denver International Airport (DEN): 230 miles, ~4 hours via I-70 and US-285. Major hub with the broadest airfare options.
Elevation: 9,375 feet. Thin air, strong UV, cool nights even in summer. Sunscreen and hydration are essential; take day one at a relaxed pace if new to high altitude.
Pet-Friendly Town: Crested Butte (both Mount and historic downtown) is genuinely dog-friendly. Off-leash hiking trails, water bowls outside shops, and several restaurant patios welcoming dogs.
Getting Around:
Parking: One assigned spot in the Grand Lodge lot, included with your stay. The lot is approximately 60 seconds on foot from the East-building entrance. EV charging available in the lot.
Red Lady Express Lift: 5-minute walk. Walk through the Grand Lodge courtyard, follow base-area signage to the lift base lodge. Lift opens daily around 9:00 AM in winter; lift status posted in the lobby.
Complimentary Town Shuttle: Mt. Express service departs from the Grand Lodge main entrance and runs to historic downtown Crested Butte's Elk Avenue (6–8 minutes). Schedule posted in the lobby and provided in the pre-arrival digital guidebook. Evening service typically runs Friday through Sunday in winter (extended hours during peak season).
Walking: The Mount Crested Butte resort village (ski shops, restaurants, après-ski bar, ski rental) is pedestrian-friendly and entirely walkable from the property. Historic downtown Crested Butte (3 miles north) is not walking distance; use the shuttle or a vehicle.
Ski, Snowboard, and Bike Storage: Free overnight and day storage at Butte & Co, the partner building immediately adjacent to Grand Lodge (~60 seconds on foot). Winter hours typically 7:00 AM–6:00 PM; extended hours in summer. Retrieve equipment, walk to the Red Lady Express lift in approximately 5 minutes.
Rental Vehicle: Available at Gunnison Valley Regional Airport (30 miles, ~45-minute drive); typically 15–20% lower rental rates than Denver International Airport. Useful for scenic drives (Kebler Pass, Maroon Bells in summer, day trips to Aspen via Independence Pass in summer only), trailhead access for backcountry hiking and biking, and supply runs to grocery stores in town or in Gunnison.
Distances from Grand Lodge:
» 5min walk ➔ Red Lady Express lift base lodge
» 6–8min (shuttle/drive) ➔ Historic downtown Crested Butte (Elk Avenue)
» 35min drive ➔ Kebler Pass scenic loop summit (best September)
» 45min drive ➔ Gunnison Valley Regional Airport (GUC)
» 230 miles, ~4hrs ➔ Denver International Airport (DEN)
» 1.5–2hrs (summer only via Independence Pass; closed Oct–May) ➔ Aspen
Winter Driving Notes: I-70 corridor and US-50 / US-135 to Gunnison can have snow and icy conditions. Tire chains may be required by Colorado law during heavy snow events. Drive slowly, allow extra time, and check road reports before departing.
Interaction with Guests:
We aim to make your stay effortless without hovering.
Before Arrival: Approximately 24 hours before check-in, you'll receive the Guesty digital guidebook with your unit access code, East-building 1st-floor directions, parking spot details, ski-storage info, shuttle schedule, restaurant recommendations, and local tips.
During Your Stay: Questions about the unit, building amenities, shuttle, or local recommendations? Email or call us — we're on Mountain Time, generally available 8:00 AM–6:00 PM weekdays and 9:00 AM–5:00 PM weekends. For urgent issues (no heat, plumbing), call immediately.
The Grand Lodge no longer maintains a 24-hour front desk on-site. We (Traverse) are your point of contact and respond quickly.
Pet Pre-Approval: If bringing a dog, email us breed, size, and temperament before booking. We approve nearly all pets, but pre-approval is required so we know who's arriving. Pet fee is $50 per stay (2 pets max).
Mid-Stay Turnover: Available with 24-hour notice ($100 fee, optional, not included).
Check-Out: 11:00 AM. Light tidying — dishes in the dishwasher, towels in the tub, trash in the bin.
Ground Rules: Quiet hours 10:00 PM–8:00 AM. No parties beyond your registered party size. No unregistered guests overnight. Smoking outdoors only — never inside.
