Mellerstain House is a magnificent example of Georgian architecture. It is the home of the 13th Earl of Haddington, and was designed by architect William Adam and his son Robert in 1725. Smailholm Tower, Sir Walter Scott's ancestral home, is within walking distance of the mansion, which is set in 80 acres of lush rolling parkland. The Teviot, Tweed, and Jed rivers offer good fishing, and there are numerous excellent golf courses to pick from. Watch the stunning and historic Common Ridings, which take place in places like Kelso, Hawick, Selkirk, Langholm, Lauder, and others. Walking and cycling opportunities abound in the Borders, whether along the shore, along the stunning mountains, or through the charming Border forests. Coldstream, Jedburgh, Kirk Yetholm, and Wooler are all within a short drive and are delightful to visit at your leisure.
