## Emplacement
A must-see destination, La Rochelle does not lack assets to charm its visitors. A port city par excellence with its four harbors, the White City bewitches all those who look at the white stone bathed in sunlight in which the buildings are built. The ocean, omnipresent, imposes itself as the symbol of the city, sweeping the nostrils of visitors with its spray. The old stones also have their say in this landscape bordered by the Atlantic Ocean where low coasts, sheer cliffs and sandy coasts alternate. International exchanges have favored a unique architectural mix, subject to various influences from across the seas. Not far from the shore, the islands of Ré, Oléron and Aix form a natural barrier preventing the ocean swell from disturbing the calm of the thousand-year-old city. Initially a fishing village founded in the 10th century, it took only two millennia for it to become a major port. Its domination in the maritime exchanges will last until the 15th century. But its rebellious spirit was not to the taste of the King and it folded under the siege of Richelieu in the 16th century. In spite of its lost independence, La Rochelle continues its economic development through the centuries until today thanks to its proximity to the ocean, always at the center of maritime exchanges.
