After spending time on Oahu and Maui in hotels and condos, we were hoping to experience a little of the “real Hawaii.” Pu’uhonua House did not disappoint us. The location in the community of Captain Cook let us live like locals for the days we were there. The house itself is unique and obviously cared for. Our party of 9 had plenty of room. The kids (7 and 9) loved the loft. The house was even well stocked, which was unexpected and much appreciated. The best part of the house was the open decks that circle each floor. The views over the lush jungle all the way down to the coast were amazing and the constant cool breeze was soothing. We were concerned that we would regret (1) no A/C (2) bugs (3) noisy frogs; but none of those were a problem. And of course we knew we would love the little green lizards that visited every day. We were incredibly lucky that our visit coincided with Kilauea’s eruption, which made our time on the Big Island—frankly—magical. Mahalo, Bruce, for an unforgettable vacation.

We thoroughly enjoyed staying at the house in Captain Cook and wish we could have stayed longer. The views are just stunning and we spent our time in the comfortable upper level admiring them. The home had everything we needed and our host was very responsive to every question. They also had chairs, umbrellas and other beach items for us to use.

Private, Close In, Convenient Location. A Tropical Paradise. What a View!

Been to the Big Island four times, Captain Cook is our favorite. This is the nicest house we have stayed in, by far. Close to the beaches, restaurants, groceries, wonderful Sunday farmer's market. Host has provided a comfortable clean unique gem.

Wow. We were blown away by how incredible this home is. From the lush landscaping and breathtaking views, to the homes comfortable and clean accomodations our expectations were surpassed on all accounts. We couldn't have found a more perfect "Hawaiin" vacation home.Our host, Bruce was very friendly and communicative.

Beautiful property with a very responsive host; unfortunately, not very clean.My daughter and I thought the house is lovely, and the setting with the fruit trees and views of the ocean in the distance was delightful.For the nightly price of this house, one expects basic level of cleanliness, but we found dusty areas in the bathroom, staircase, and even bedside lamps that we could not avoid touching. Many of the dishes and mugs we took out from the cabinets were dirty and the pots and pans were a jumble in one cabinet. Other places we have stayed at in this price range also provide body wash, shampoo, hand wash but this property does not. If we had been prepared for this, it may have been less disappointing.Overall, we enjoyed our stay because of the large windows, lovely views, fruit trees, very responsive host, and the ability to bring our dog.

Aloha Suprana, I am sorry for the inconvenience with respect to your last minute booking. I had some miscommunication with my cleaner. She was under the impression that it was one of my friends that was coming to stay in the house and did not do a super thorough cleaning as is the protocol when this one friend visits. Incredible View

Three generations of our family spent 4 relaxing nights at the house. The views from the main floor are incredible. My college-age son loved relaxing and reading in the hammock on the porch. If you are looking for a delicious breakfast out during your stay, do not miss the nearby Coffee Shack.

Jungle Retreat

One-of-a-kind home. More wildlife than people here which is how we prefer it. It had all the luxuries we needed (great kitchen and laundry). Choicemart and eggs close by. Great water pressure in the bathrooms.

Incredible Views

Very nice home with incredible views from all around the house. At night it sounds like a rainforest sound machine setting with all the birds and creatures singing. The property has gorgeous plants and grounds. The house was clean and had everything needed for a nice stay. It is incredibly close to Black Rock Pizza which we ordered twice during our stay it was so good! We enjoyed our time very much.

Wonderful Property with Gorgeous Views

Truly enjoyed our stay here. We had 11 family members that flew in from Alaska, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Idaho, and Texas. The upper lanai and views are unrivaled. It's truly one of those places that you can sit and enjoy for hours. It's peaceful and delightfully breezy. No complaints whatsoever. Thank you for providing us with a wonderful location for our family to enjoy all that the Big Island offers.

This is a beautiful and completely unique house, with sweeping views and jungle all around, and yet it's still a short hop from ameneties ranging from the amazing Coffee Shack restaurant to groceries, swimming, historic places, farmer's markets, and more. The owner is hands down the most responsive and best communicating host I've every worked with! As great as the house is, knowing that we were in such good hands with the host made a difference to reducing stress during our stay. Thank you!
