Another disappointed renter
A year ago, we gave our grandson the opportunity to choose a location for a family trip to celebrate his graduation from high school and he chose Vancouver.
I researched options suitable for a family of 7 and this home seemed like the best fit given the number of bedrooms and even more important, the number of bathrooms given our 7 adults. Unfortunately within a short time of our arrival, the toilet in the main downstairs bathroom clogged and became unusable. I notified the property manager as he instructed if any problem arose and he said he would come out. Later I remembered that there was a second bathroom downstairs and when I went to check it out, I saw that it had flooded even though we hadn't used it. I texted the property manager again to notify him of this additional problem and when he arrived, he stated that he "knew what the problem was". It turned out to be a problem with the septic system which thankfully was repaired but not until we had lost almost a full days use of the downstairs bathrooms.
Another issue is the listing says that the house has central air conditioning but we learned from the property manager when we complained about the heat that only the upstairs had central air and we unfortunately weren't able to get it to work even though the property manager said he heard it turn on. Because we found it very hot upstairs, we opened the windows to cool things down and unfortunately on our second evening, we could smell the raw sewage from the backyard where the septic system had failed. We were only staying 3 nights & our adult children had an early flight the next morning so at that point, we decided to make the best of our last evening together and didn't notify the property manager or the owner.
In hindsight, I should have notified the property manager and owner at least on our last day but I decided to wait and contact the owner after we checked out and at that time, asked to be compensated for less than one night's stay given the difficulties. The owner refused to compensate us and insisted that we should have contacted her with our issues even though the property manager told us to contact HIM with any problems and wrote down his contact information. He actually was staying on site in a shed behind the house so it made perfect sense to contact him but the owner feels otherwise which is the reason given for not compensating us. This sadly is my first negative VRBO review and I have a 5 star rating as a renter.
