Light and Airy, Every Comfort on the Lisbon Coastline

Portugal is enjoyed best when you live like a resident. In this apartment, ideally situated along the coast between Lisbon and Cascais in the charming village of Carcavelos, you'll do just that.

This refurbished flat near the best beach on the Lisbon coast is modest and in an older building, but it has charm and many amenities. One flight up (sorry, no elevator), it features an open floor plan and a wrap-around balcony with French doors that fill the living and dining area with light and let in ocean breezes much of the year.

The longest beach along the Lisbon/Cascais coast is a five-minute walk away, featuring a long boardwalk with cafes, restaurants and bars from which to watch magnificent sunsets, plus all manner of water sports. Carcavelos is host to international surfing, kite surfing and wind surfing contests. The imposing 16th century fort of Sao Juliao de Barra, once a political prison, sits sentry at one end of the beach, and at the other is an outcropping of ocean rock locally renowned for it's curative iodine.

The apartment is located at the entrance to a bustling square with two hotels and a dozen cafes and restaurants. The Riviera Hotel has a pool, gym and conference facilities available at a per diem rate. There’s also a taxi stand and a tennis club, plus a small shopping center that offers most services you may need.

With all of these facilities and public transportation close by, there’s no need for a car unless you want one. Rental agencies are just a few minutes up the train line. Carcavelos is equally accessible to Lisbon with its rich history and culture, Estoril with its famous Casino and Cascais, a picturesque fishing village. Also nearby is the beautiful mountain retreat of Sintra, the summer home of the Portuguese royals and aristocracy, with a palace, a castle and Moorish ramparts.

This is the third time we've stayed in this lovely apartment. It was very clean and well-presented and we felt at home immediately. We had a relaxing two week stay and really enjoyed the apartment, the excellent location and lots of the local restaurants and cafés.

It was the perfect experience for us a second time. It was lovely to be greeted with a warm and welcoming hospitality. The apartment is spacious and clean with everything we needed as well as it is in walking distance to everything we were looking for - beach, restaurants and shopping. It was an excellent and relaxing stay!

Great location

This 2 bedroom is steps from the beautiful beach. Shopping mall 2 blocks away. A variety of restaurants in the neighborhood. The owner was a pleasure to work with. Very prompt responses and well cared for property.

Perfect location

My family and I enjoyed staying at this apartment very much. It was very clean and comfortable. It was the perfect place to stay in Carcavelos. It was in short walking distance to many things like restaurants, grocery store, train station and a 5 minute walk to the beach. We would like to go back again soon.

Perfect Stay

We enjoyed everything about our stay. From check in to help and suggestions our hosts were very attentive. The area was perfect for a beach stay location It was easy 10/15 min walk to get to trains so a car wasn’t needed. Pictures of the apartment were right on par with posting. Area is safe and clean - restaurants /coffee shops/grocery store were all a stone throws away. We will return

Great location at Carcavelos

We booked this place not realizing how far it was out of Lisbon but it worked out well. The apartment is located close to some restaurants and a grocery store. Grocery store was a plus. There is a train station 5 minutes walk from the apartment so worked out great. Checkin process was smooth. Malcolm was great to work with, always available for any questions and made sure our checkin process went smoothly. The pictures are exactly as it looks, we had plenty of room for four of us, the two bathrooms were great. Highly recommend.

Granny’s appartment

The pros: 5 min walk to the beach, 15 min walk to the train station that gets you all around the coast, spacious, bright, good kitchen. The cons: the view is to a garage and a construction site (which the pictures don’t show) noisy day and evening, persistent bad smell of humidity in both bathrooms, park meters limited to 4 hours, free spots in the area hard to find. Feels like you’re squatting your granny’s flat: tchotchkes on every surface, kids drawings on the walls, faded furniture and drapes. Great potential but needs attention. The owner is responsive.

Inaccurate description

Large condo with access to beach, however, pcondo hovers over very busy, main road arterial with road noise all day long. Apartment is very old with noxious fumes from sewer lines, showers have intermittent hot/cold (very difficult to get steady temperature) in one of two bathrooms. Be sure to ask about parking as there’s only one side street with free parking- otherwise pay by the hour. It’s nice enough but local hotels are cheaper (Riviera) and provide free breakfast and have pools. We were given the option to move, by owner, as there was constant construction and a noisy automotive shop next door that operates throughout the day. It’s too much of a time consuming process to move, wasting half a day to transition, so we chose to wait it out. Be careful with this place, its not a shangri la.

I do believe this traveler would have been happier in a hotel. We apologized for and tried to address some issues, but others, like roadwork or a dog barking at night, are honestly beyond our control. This is an older building, but the clear majority of our guests have enjoyed their stays and several have returned to stay again. That said, when a problem is reported, we look into it as soon as we can get access. A rental flat is not a hotel; you’re inhabiting a particular neighborhood, a particular community. This neighborhood, with its proximity to the beach, cafes, restaurants and transportation to Lisbon, is a favorite of the Portuguese. That said, I am sorry that her stay was disappointing. I did offer to refund the balance of her remaining five days if moving was an option, but apparently it was not.

Nice apartment in perfect location

We stayed for 6 weeks at this lovely but somewhat antiquated apartment. The location is truly perfect. Even though it was July and it was really hot all around we enjoyed pretty much perfect temperatures everyday because of the sea breeze. While we had been worried that there was no AC, that was never an issue. Additionally, we were literally 5 min away walking from praia de Carcavelos -- enabling us to walk on the beach every evening -- and from a number of high quality restaurants both by the beach and in Praca do Junqueiro. And since we cooked many a meal ourselves it was great to have a very convenient and well supplied Pingo Doce only 5 min away. It was particularly helpful that the kitchen was well supplied both with kitchen utensils and cooking spices and oils! They were lacking an Italian stove coffee maker, but we bought one and left it for future guests. We did not rent a car but had no problem moving around. CP trains, Carris buses, and Uber rides were all easy to get.

Diese Ferienwohnung ist wirklich ein Traum! Die Lage ist perfekt, zwei Minuten vom Strand und drei Minuten vom Supermarkt entfernt. Die Einrichtung ist wunderschön (auf den Photos wirkt es etwas altmodisch, das ist aber nicht so) und es ist wirklich an alles gedacht (Waschmaschine, Spülmaschine, Mikrowelle, Bügelbrett etc.). Es gibt zwei Schlafräume und ein Wohnzimmer mit Schlafsofa. Durch den Schnitt sitzt man auch nicht so aufeinander sondern hat seine Freiräume, auch mit vier Erwachsenen (wir waren dort mit zwei großen Teenagern). Es gibt auch zwei Bäder, was sehr angenehm ist. Auf dem Balkon kann man schön sitzen und Kaffee trinken und die Wäsche aufhängen. Klimaanlage nicht nötig, da wirklich immer eine frische Brise vom Meer herweht. Trotz Hitzewelle (38C) war es drinnen immer angenehm. Cassy war perfekt als Gastgeberin, super freundlich und verlässlich. In zehn Minuten ist man beim Bahnhof und kann den Zug nach Cascais oder nach Belem und Lissabon nehmen. Im Dorf gibt es Surfschulen und einen Tennisclub, wo man unkompliziert einen Platz mieten kann. Am Wochenende kann es am Strand voll werden, aber wenn man früh oder spät geht, ist es sehr angenehm. Der einzige kleine Makel war vielleicht der Straßenlärm am Wochenende, aber das ist normal in einem Ferienort. Wir kommen auf jeden Fall wieder!

Translation of review: This vacation rental is truly a dream! The location is perfect, two minutes from the beach and three minutes from the supermarket. The furnishings are beautiful (it looks a bit old-fashioned in the photos, but it's not) and everything has been thought of (washing machine, dishwasher, microwave, ironing board, etc.). There are two bedrooms and a living room with a sofa bed. The layout means that you don't feel cramped, even with four adults (we were there with two teenage children). There are also two bathrooms, which is very convenient. The balcony is a lovely place to sit and drink coffee or hang out the washing. Air conditioning is not necessary, as there is always a fresh breeze blowing in from the sea. Despite the heatwave (38°C), it was always comfortable inside. Cassie was the perfect host, super friendly and reliable. The train station is ten minutes away, and you can take the train to Cascais or Belem and Lisbon. There are surf schools and a tennis club in the village where you can easily rent a court. The beach can get crowded on weekends, but if you go early or late, it's very pleasant. The only minor flaw was perhaps the street noise on weekends, but that's normal in a resort town. We'll definitely be back! Date of arrival - August 5, 2025

Only Wish it was My House!

Whether you want to stay in Portugal and want a tourist experience or a local's experience along the coast of Lisbon, this is the perfect place. My family (Husband and 4 year old) stayed for a month in the apartment in August and it was one of the best stays in my years of travel. The apartment is literally 5 minutes walk to the beach (maybe less), 10-15min walk to the train station, 5 min walk to a mall with a full grocery store, pharmacy, laundry, stores and restaurants (and even 5-10min walk to two small playgrounds). Its perfect for a family staying with small children. Car truly not needed. Literally, if you don't want to take the train, you can just use Uber or Bolt apps to get anywhere along the Lisbon coast (including Sintra) in10-25min. Its truly in the middle of everything. I felt like I never left my real home with all these conveniences. I was worried before we arrived about it having no air conditioning in the hottest month of the summer. But, with the house so close to the water, the temperature was literally 60F at night and 70-80F during the day. Plus, the sun never fully shines directly into the apartment. So, with the windows open and just one fan running, we never felt hot once! Its just a wonderful place to stay, and the owner and property manager were so helpful. There are literally only two things that I mentioned to the owner and the property manager that were cons. The first is that the main shower drains slowly, so its hard to take a shower in it. However, its my understanding from the property manager that they are already planning to fix it. Second, with the convenience of the location, of course comes loud road noise in the AM. But, the neighbor's dogs and the car business across the street's dogs were a major annoyance in the first week. But, after a while, like everything, you get used to it. Great place, great support, you will have a great time living here.

Beach life with city access

Excellent place to stay to visit Lisbon…or not! We had to tear ourselves away from the beach and some sightseeing. Property Is as advertised - or even nicer. Great location between the beach and a square surrounded by restaurants, with a Pingo Doce grocery store close by. The walk to the train station is pleasant. Trains run frequently. The house manager is pleasant and efficient. No AC, but none needed. The breezes from the ocean keep the house cool and with windows on 3 sides there are cross breezes. Well furbished kitchen. Our stay was delightful. My husband just chimed in and said to make sure I described our comfortable it is. Yes, it was beautiful (the art!) and a great place just to relax.

Apt was lovely, close to everything, easy walking. Noisy with businesses during day, but quiet at night. Kitchen spacious, as is bathtub, much appreciated for soaking after walking and beachcombing. Friendly locals, good food all around.

Excellent location - A home from home

This apartment is light, airy and spacious. It's really well equipped in the kitchen and enabled us to eat at home most evenings, which was just what we wanted. The location is excellent: A five minute walk to the beach; a five minute walk to the supermarket; a two minute walk to a selection of cafés and restaurants and really close to the main road that runs between Cascais and Lisbon. Beds, sofas and furniture were all comfortable. The main bathroom had a lovely shower and bath and was beautifully tiled. The only negative we found was that we didn't use the second bathroom, preferring to keep the door shut because of the bad smell from the drains. We visit Carcavelos frequently and will definitely look to rent this apartment again - We couldn't have asked for more!

Gorgeous Apartment in a Perfect Location for Exploring Lisbon and it's Stunning Coastline

we have just returned from a wonderful week in Carcavelos, Lisbon. On arrival you are met by Cassie who gives you the lowdown on the area. She is extremely helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. Although predominantly a residential area it has everything you need to hand for a great stay. Location wise it is perfect. 2 mins from a fantastic beach, the best we went to in fact. There you will find really good restaurants which are mentioned in the apartment guide book. Great service, fabulous food, lovely people. There are also restaurants, cafes and a shopping centre around the corner. Great coffee and pastries in the morning ! The actual apartment, although it looks quite average on the outside is a little gem. It has everything you need. It is bright, spacious, airy, beautifully decorated, has all mod cons, a great shower, huge balcony and comfy beds. 10 minutes walk from the train station which takes you to Lisbon or to Cascais in the other direction. Both are must see's for the food, hustle and bustle but it really is lovely coming home to your quiet apartment to chill out after a busy day sightseeing. We would highly recommend this apartment and area. If we ever come back to Portugal we would definitely stay here again. Thank you so much !!!

Second visit as excellent as the first....

We visited this property two years ago and were so impressed we returned in 2017 for a two week visit. The property is beautiful and well-maintained. It is a few minutes walk to a 2km beach, good restaurants and a small, upscale shopping centre and grocery store. The property is about a 10 minute walk to a commuter train with good access to Lisbon and Cascais. The family that owns the property and the property manager are professional and pleasant to work with.

Great apartment

This is a spacious and well-furnished flat which made an excellent base for our holiday in Lisbon. It's not in a pretty building, but inside it's elegant, very convenient and great for its price. The apartment is a stone's-throw from the long and lively beach, and the sea breezes meant that it never felt oppressively hot despite wall-to-wall sunshine. There's a square full of restaurants and cafés round the corner--our children became devotees of one place that sold outrageous combinations of waffles, crepes and ice-cream. And a good supermarket just beyond that. The train station is a short walk away and has excellent connections. The apartment was kitted out very thoughtfully with everything we needed including copious kitchen equipment, beach-gear, guidebooks, Saramago novels and wireless internet. All in all a highly recommended place to stay.

My sister and I inherited this apartment from my mother, having spent our teenage years here as expats before we both moved to the US for school, work, then marriage and family. We commuted daily to school in Lisbon from Carcavelos and made lasting friendships, so we feel very connected to Portugal. We renovated the apartment in the hope that more people might enjoy what we enjoy about Portugal and this area. The neighbors are very pleasant, and the location, with its myriad cafes, restaurants, shops and its proximity to the beach, is much sought after by the Portuguese themselves.

Our mother chose this apartment because of its location. She never drove, but it is ideally located for public transportation, so there’s no need for a car unless you want one. The residential neighborhood has almost every amenity, including shops, restaurants and a supermarket, and it’s only a three-minute walk to the most popular beach along this remarkable coast line. Our mother stayed here for the rest of her life, partly because it’s less expensive than much of Europe, but mostly because of the warmth and kindness of the Portuguese people. It is still this way today.

O que faz essa propriedade ser única?

We return to Portugal at least once a year to visit friends and relive fond memories. We’ve refurbished the flat to modern standards and think it’s a modest but sunny, happy and comfortable home. Growing up here was a unique and wonderful experience, and it spoiled us for good food and wine; you have to work hard to get a bad meal here. Eating out and outdoor cafe life are very much a part of the Portuguese experience, which boasts easy hospitality, kindness and charm, a diversity of international influences, and one of the oldest histories and richest cultures of Europe.
