Whalers Cottage
Guests will enjoy the rich history of whaling, dairy operations, abalone fishing, and canning which were among many thriving business that A.M. Allan operated on this historic property dating back to 1898. This two-level home is perfectly situated to maximize the views of Point Lobos and is just a few steps to Monastery Beach — famous for diving and pounding ocean swells. Take pleasure in the sweeping panoramic ocean views of Point Lobos and a white sand beach as your backyard. Scuba divers come from far and wide to enjoy the kelp forests, otters, seals, whales and other wildlife found in the waters off Monastery Beach. Hardwood floors, fireplace and large glass panels blur the lines between indoor and outdoor living. 3 cottages on property. Two 2 bedroom one 3 bedroom.

2 Dogs max allowed for a fee of $195.


No Events of any kind are permitted.

Wonderful stay in a lovely 100 year old home.

We had family visiting and a special birthday to celebrate. Couldn't have asked for a better experience. The home had a wonderful historical background, the beach that lay beyond the yard was enchanting and the house itself was amazingly well supplied.That we could bring our dog was just the icing on the cake. We hope to return!

Wonderful visit by the sea

The property was wonderful. It was obviously old but very clean and comfortable. You couldn’t ask for a better location with a ton of privacy. We wouldn’t hesitate to return in the future.

Breathtaking views.

Quaint, cozy, comfortable, funky… Built in 1904. Amazing location, unfettered views, fully-equipped, plenty of firewood (burned it everyday), will return with my family again. Great hosts as well; very responsive.

Fabulous Vacation Home!

We stayed at the Whaler's Cottage at the end of September this year...we absolutely loved it! The views from the home onto the beach and the rugged coast are stunning. The house had everything we needed and was in a great location. We also loved the history of the home; very interesting. We hope to come back to the area, and will definitely stay at the Whaler's Cottage if we are so lucky!

Private Slice of Paradise

My family and I stayed at the Whalers Cottage in November and had a dreamy, relaxing, memorable time. Falling asleep to the sound of waves and waking up to the view of the ocean past the meadow in the front of the cabin was a memory that will always be carved in my mind. Everything was beyond clean and there was a fully stocked kitchen. This place is a true gem.

Everything about this lovely property is magical. From it’s history to the spectacular views to the privacy, it is unmatched in any rental we found in Carmel over the past 25 years. There aren’t enough superlatives to describe Whalers cottage. We can’t wait until we can return.

Really a very special home and location that is very hard to find on the California coast anywhere. The views are truly stunning. That is not an understatement. Pictures are accurate and the house is simply furnished which the photos show. Not 5 stars nor should it be as it's more in keeping with the nature of this historic property. The beds are very comfortable which to me is super important. The beach is gorgeous , however it is NOT a swimming beach and in fact can be quite dangerous so if you have kids, keep them away from the water. Sneaker waves and riptides are common here. Look it up. Great private grounds and a state park walking path with direct access to the property for a a couple of miles of beachfront beautiful walks. Since it is a state park path and beach you do have a fair amount of people walking on the beach and by the side of the home but not directly in front of it due to the large fenced yard you see in the photos. So quite private. Fully stocked with everything you would ever need which most rentals are not. Kudos for that. A very special place which you can see is almost constantly booked solid... there is a reason why.

Magical

The 100+ year old cabin has magic. The property has magic. The ocean front has magic. It even smells like magic with wood burning in the fire place and the wind from the eucalyptus and cypress trees. This is a must stay. Thank you again to the hosts for preserving something timeless and magical.

Paradise

It was better than advertised. Close to “city”, hiking and nestled on an incredible beach. We highly recommend it. Our only advice is that though they permit dogs, there are a lot of guidelines. I would suggest you don’t bring them. We did and had an amazing experience but would not next time. Truly an amazing time and experience.

JUST WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED!

If the Whalers Cottage isn’t the definition of the word “CHILL!”, then I don’t know what else it could be! The soothing sounds of the ocean, crackling fireplace and solitude are outstanding and re-energizing! A fantastic place to come and decompress for couples or the family! My fav moments are when I’d bring my book out with a glass of wine and sit in the bench between the pines overlooking the ocean waves crashing ashore a mere 20 yards away! Always painful to leave such a magical place! Our second time and we will assuredly be back! Cheers! The Kisabeth Family Napa, CA

Spectacular location - spectacular stay

There could be no better location to stay in Carmel. This cottage is literally steps from the beach and the trails. The owners are extremely fast to respond, The owners clearly spent a great deal of time leaving us notes on the cottage and their preferences, toiletries for our stay, welcome wine, etc. The cottage was as described and had everything we could possibly need: games, fully equipped kitchen, toiletries, binoculars, special dog towels (love this idea and that they were clearly marked - thank you!), wood, etc…. There were no hassles no complications. Absolutely fabulous week - thank you Sara and Patrick. Clearly very thoughtful owners.

An absolute gem in Carmel!

We have stayed at the cottages twice now and will be back as often as possible. Most reviews are about amenities and things to do nearby...the cottages have just about everything you need however we never wanted to leave (so I'm not going to provide any nearby amenities info). BBQ'ing, walking the beach or on the trails, fires in the fireplace (and on the beach), and watching the abundant ocean wildlife was plenty for our vacation. The Whisler family are wonderful to work with and responded quickly to our questions/requests. My only hesitation in writing this review is that others will learn about this amazing place and the availability will be reduced! We are looking forward to staying there again in the future and will be bringing more family and friends to share in the experience!

We just returned from my annual Birthday trip to the Whaler's Cottage. As usual it was a five star experience! The cottage is so special in every way. The ocean views,the comfortable cottage,the walking trail close by,the large expansive lawn to just sit back and relax and absorb all the beauty! What more can I say? My husband and I have lived and traveled all over the world and this spot is on our top 10 list of glorious places! The owners,Patrick and Sara are just the best. Most Relaxing Vacation Of Your Life

Staying in the Whalers Cottage was a joy! The cottage was a mixture of historic touches and modern conveniences. It was comfortable and well-stocked with plenty of windows facing the backyard and ocean. We had visits every day from rabbits, herons, quail, hawks, dolphins, and sea otters. The beach was just steps from the backyard but the trees give you a sense of privacy from the public. You are located just a few minutes from the gorgeous Point Lobos Reserve as well as close to other popular locations like the 17 mile drive, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Elkhorn Slough, Bixby Bridge, and whale watching. But you could spend your entire vacation just sitting on the beach or backyard with binoculars in hand, experiencing the most relaxing vacation of your life. If you have not fallen asleep to the sound of ocean waves, then you need to book this cottage at once.

Incredible location!

The location is unbeatable, close to shopping Carmel village and numerous restaurants and galleries. Great walking trails overlooking the bluffs were a nice plus. The beach is not safe for swimming though but there are others close by. The house is comfortable; but the rules are onerous. For all the expectations for the care of the property, we were surprised to find very dirty carpet and worn furniture. Pets are limited to certain areas of the house which should be noted upfront. (Not truly pet friendly.) The kitchen is very well equiped and lots of space. If you are looking for the best views and a peaceful environment, you will not be disappointed. The master bedroom view is absolutely spectacular. We saw a family of deer and a coyote too. Has a wonderful time!

Excellent cottage.

Can’t beat the location and views of Pt Lobos state park. Well maintained cottage with a very interesting family history captured in a book written by a member of the A.M. Allen family.
