This is our second visit to this property. Not only is the home beautiful with everything you need to enjoy your visit, but the property itself is stunning. The river, trails, bon fire area, hot tub and patio on the large deck make this place special. I love all the trees and it’s so peaceful, a wonderful place to unwind from a busy city life. My kids love to explore the trails and gets them away from their electronics which is nice. I cannot wait to come back again. Thank you Heather, you helped make this stay a breeze, from check in to check out. You are an excellent property manager. Another bonus in staying here, thank you!

Perfect property if you have young kids. Lots of stuff to keep them busy. The property landscaping is amazing. Great location just minutes from south haven/Lake Michigan

House manager was in touch days before, making check in easy! Also gave info in regards to area attractions! House was well furnished, full kitchen, making meals at home easy! The property was beautiful and very enjoyable!

Black River Retreat

Property was beautiful and great. Listing was spot on. Hot tub was great. The property and landscaping was awesome and very well taken care of. Would definitely recommend and stay here again.

Perfect Stay in Nature

This property was absolutely perfect for my girls trip. The pictures did not do the landscaping justice- we could’ve sat out there for days. The property manager reached out in case we had any issues and made sure we knew where everything was. I will definitely look into staying here again if I come back to the area with a group! Plenty of space and amenities.

Great private getaway!

Great place for a family wanting to have a peaceful and fun vacation. My grandchildren had a wonderful time ages 5-14. I would recommend this to any family. Wish there was a television and comfortable chair in the living room for someone who is not able to use the steps to go downstairs.

We’re so glad you chose to stay at Black River Retreat and we thank you for the review! We apologize that the living room is not as accessible as we’d like it to be. However, we’ve made sure to have a TV available for use in different rooms. One is located on a rolling cart in the closet of the galaxy bedroom on the main floor. We hope this will help anyone staying in the future with similar challenges. 🙂

Excellent property inside and out. Our entry code did not work on arrival and it took a short amount of time to get in contact with anyone to fix the problem. We also would like access to television and this was very limited.

Thank you so much for your kind words about our property and for taking the time to share your experience. We're very sorry for the trouble with the entry code on your arrival. This was an unusual circumstance-- our family had an unexpected emergency and was at the hospital at the moment of our Dad's passing, which caused a short delay in communication. We truly appreciated your patience and understanding at that time. Regarding the TV access, we don't plan to add traditional cable service, as our smart TVs allow guests to log in to their own streaming accounts for a more personalized experience. We are so glad that you enjoyed the property overall and hope to have the chance to welcome you back in the future under better circumstances.

Amazing place

Everything about this place is top notch and amazing! My girlfriend’s and I have traveled all over for years and this place was the absolute best. Every detail has been thought of including a raft up and running on the water, the hot tub on and heating up upon arrival, complimentary snacks from the area and name placards for each and every beautiful tree, shrub or flower on the grounds. There’s something for everyone here. I can’t recommend this place enough.

Excellent property

This is one of the best properties we have ever stayed in through VRBO. Everything in the listing was accurate. The house was so clean it was shining. There were so many thoughtful items provided like bug spray, coffee with sugar and creamers, and hand sanitizer in addition to the kids games and water toys mentioned in the listing. Our kids had a wonderful time and can't wait to stay there again.

Exceeds expectations!

Pictures cannot capture the beautiful space we enjoyed at the Black River Retreat. There is something for everyone! Make sure to make time to spend in the yard - we spent our days exploring the town and evenings at the lovely fire pit with the fireflies and in the hot tub. They thought of nearly everything! We plan to come back!

Hidden Oasis

The pictures do not do this property justice. It’s absolutely gorgeous, inside and out. The attention to detail and communication from the property manager was appreciated. We were easily able to drive into South Haven and it’s also not too far from Saugatuck. Local grocery store is just 5 minutes away. Highly recommend this property!

Serene and peaceful vacation!

If you put this place on your list of places to stay in the area do it if its available the word will be out soon about this place! super clean, set way back in the woods and corn and on a river, awesome deck, awesome firepit and patio, awesome hot tup, tons of room to hang out, we did not use the river but it would be great for summer days with people swimming and hanging out its a beautiful spot! The overall condition of the yard and all the beautiful landscaping is awesome, the property manager was great and check on us through the app halfway through, left us a welcome card and some goodies that were great. Only 10 mins to South Haven and half hr to Saugatuck was great. We golfed and took in the sights and local food for 5 days and every night we could not wait to get back and have a fire or go in the hot tub and just chill.

Exceptional Home & Property in Private Wooded Setting

My family and I truly enjoyed staying at this property. The view off the deck, beautifully landscaped yard and river with wooded trails was perfect for our weekend getaway. It was peaceful and luxurious. The home was well maintained, nicely decorated and offered plenty of room. The wraparound deck was my favorite spot to enjoy coffee in the morning. The kids loved walking the trails, which were not long and easily navigated for them to do on their own (ages 7-12). The bonfire was a perfect spot for the kids to roast marshmallows and the adults to relax. The area is conveniently located close to Lake Michigan and beautiful beaches and if you like smoked fish, check out Bob’s meats, less than 5 min away. I look forward to booking again, this is one of my favorite rental properties and would highly recommend.

Amazing Find!

We absolutely loved our stay! The home was clean and beautiful. There were great board games, wonderful books, and a really fun space for little ones. The property manager was efficient, friendly, and incredibly helpful. AND THE GROUNDS!!! The lawn was pristine, the landscaping was gorgeous (and labeled), and the outdoor patio felt like a beautiful extention of the indoor space. The trails on property were these perfect little 1/2 mile loops that all my kids (2-17yrs) enjoyed. We saw deer, wild turkeys, tons of birds, and rabbits. There were even fun play structures outside where my teenagers challenged each other to physical contests. We enjoyed s'mores and fires every night while watching the fireflies. Cannot say enough good things about this property!

Outstanding. TLDR; Don't delay, book today!

We went here for a quick weekend getaway and it was amazing. Far to much to enjoy in just a few days. The place is perfectly located between Bangor and South Haven, about 10 minutes from each. It is set back in the woods so you have great privacy and wonderful nature encounters (deer and a cardinal that said good morning to us every day at the window). The kids had a wonderful time. They played on the equipment, went for walks in the woods, they even played in the basement with the wonderful toys provided. It was a fantastic stay! The Good: • Wonderful location • Plenty to do. Hot tub, play equipment, nature walks • Wildlife is everywhere • Peaceful • Great host and wonderful communication The Bad • Um.. nothing. Maybe the stairs down to the river could have reflective tape to make the edges easier to see going down The Ugly • Nothing, I had to stretch to get a bad poing. I know I can't come up with an ugly one.

Wonderful!

The Black River Retreat is a wonderful place to stay. The home and grounds are beautiful. We loved everything from the PURPLE (best color ever) front door to the signage indicating what the various trees around the yard are to the supplied fire starting and firewood for the firepit. Everything was done very well. The book on the kitchen counter was a very helpful resource. The local products left for us was a nice touch also. The labeling was terrific (like how to start the dishwasher). The communications with Heather (the property manager) were much appreciated. There are a couple of things (both of which are safety related) we suggest to improve The Black River Retreat. The first is to have some kind of railing on the stairs to the river. As we age, we are less secure in our footing, and a railing would be very helpful. And, the second is to put some kind of reflective tape or the like on the step going to the firepit level. It blended in and if you didn't pay close attention when walking, it would be easy to fall. I would definitely stay at The Black River Retreat again, and would highly recommend it to others.
