Amazing house, amazing host, amazing location!

Kurt was so great and easy to coordinate with prior to our arrival. The house was setup perfectly for us. All of the restaurants and bars in downtown SLO are literally 2 blocks away which was extremely convenient but also far enough away that there were no noise issues. We had an awesome time and will certainly stay here again next time we make a trip down.

Everything we had hoped for and more!

The Mission Orchard Bungalow was the ideal place to call home for our family wedding weekend in SLO. We needed a retreat for our family of 3, my sister and her husband, and our 89 year old father, that would be comfortable for us all, and we could not have made a better choice. The interior of the home was beautifully appointed, warm and inviting; and the yard was a paradise for relaxation. Kurt was an attentive charming host who took the time to make sure our stay was nothing less than perfect.

Cook's dream rental

So many times when renting a property the kitchens are not equipped to be used for more than basic cooking. Not this home! From the Cuisinart food processor to the All-Clad pans and Henckel knives, this kitchen rocked! And we used it, as after all the main point of renting a home instead of staying in a hotel is being able to cook the local foods. And as a gardener, the amazing yard was a need respite from the hectic wedding weekend. The upstairs loft was perfect for our nightowl daughter. She could watch internet movies until the wee hours and not disturb us, and we could get up and begin our day cooking breakfast and making coffee without waking her. The host was accommodating and responded immediately to all questions. I, however, hesitate to recommend this place--because I want to go back, and don't want it booked from here until forever!

An Enthusiastic 5 Stars!

We rented this delightful SLO cottage for a week and could not have been happier. Kurt, the owner, welcomed us warmly, and shared some local knowledge about best beaches, restaurants, etc. If you're there on a Thursday, don't miss the amazing Farmer's Market from 6-9pm! The house is perfectly located, five minutes walk from the center of town, and amazingly well equipped. We cooked for six every evening; the kitchen had EVERYTHING we needed, including serving platters, high-quality cookware, every possible small appliance, copious glasses for wiine etc. etc. The backyard is delightful -- we had dinner outside a couple of nights as we hit the hottest weekend of the year. The bedrooms are very attractive, and the bathrooms include plenty of toiletries. There are loads of extra towels and linens as well. The only thing I feel I should mention in this review is the narrow spiral staircase up to the very large bedroom on the second floor. It is a little tricky to navigate with luggage! We hope to return to this beautifully maintained home!

Great Propery

Excellent SLO House!

Kurt was the perfect host. He was a great communicator and left clear notes and instructions both ahead of time via email and and also at the house once we arrived. The entire house has all of the amenities a travel could need. The kitchen was particularly great. We spent tons of time on the back deck and loved getting to see the turtle and fish in the back pond. The house is mere blocks from downtown, but also just a minute or two off the freeway--the best of both worlds. Would definitely rent this spot again!

This hoouse was perfect for our family stay, well stocked and clean. We felt as if we were staying at a friend's house rather than a rental. Darling property!

My friends and I are Cal Poly alumni so we were looking for a place where we could spend the weekend together. This was the perfect spot. The house is beautiful and the backyard is huge and perfectly landscaped. We were very comfortable as there were five available beds. The house is a super easy walk to the main streets downtown and all the great restaurants we wanted to visit. I would highly recommend this rental!

Great Location, impeccable property

Had the most amazing trip to SLO in the best VRBO I've rented. The big plus of the property is the location..walking distance to all the downtown shops and restaurants. The actual property is impeccable..everything updated and modern, each room is beautifully decorated, the beds are wonderfully comfortable, the backyard is gorgeous and perfect for outdoor dining and relaxing. The upstairs room is like it's own apartment..plenty of room if you needed more space..and a big screen TV upstairs that is perfect for an afternoon of movies and relaxing. We were able to rent movies using the Roku by accessing our Amazon account and it was simple. And Kurt was literally the perfect host..there when you needed him yet inconspicuous at the same time..Would have loved to spend more time with him actually! Thrilled to have found this place and will definitely be back.

Cannot say enough great things!

We have rented many VRBO properties. This was by far the very best! The home is charming, comfortable, and utterly updated: from the toaster oven to the washer and dryer to the spectacular kitchen, every appliance and utensil is of absolutely top quality. The beds were incredibly comfortable, the linens and blankets were top drawer, there was plenty of room (we had five people at our peak, and we could have easily had more), and the home was spotlessly clean. The location was perfect. Easy to find -- just a block off of the 101 exit -- and a three-block walk to everything that downtown San Luis Obispo has to offer, which is actually a lot: great restaurants, interesting shops, and three (yes, three!) movie theaters. SLO (it was our first visit) was incredibly relaxing and easy. I haven't traveled enough to know if it's truly the Happiest Place in the USA (SLO's motto), but the people could not possibly have been friendlier. The house is also a great jumping off spot for hikes up the many great mountains (including the "nine sisters" -- formerly volcanic peaks that dot the area) and superb beaches and beach towns like Avila and Morrow Bay, which are only about 15 minutes away. And the Hearst Castle is only an hour north -- and well worth the visit, assuming it's a day that allows a clear view. Kurt was the perfect host: utterly attentive and completely respectful of our privacy. He helped us with whatever need we had, including (unfortunately) having to visit the local urgent care facility. For any question we had, Kurt responded immediately. But he left us alone. Unlike some VRBO rentals, there wasn't a long list of do's and don't's. Simply a great house that he trusted us to treat well. If you want the perfect place for exploring the Central Coast, you couldn't do any better than this rental. We plan to come back ourselves. Thank you, Kurt!

Perfect get away that is close to downtown but very quite.

This is the perfect balance of a very old and lovely house that has been made new. It has everything included: - Wi-Fi (high speed), - Pandora and Netflix / crackle - a kitchen with all the things you would need for a large (15 people plus) group including a large stock pot, crock pot, toaster oven, Cuisinart, confection oven chaffing dishes, etc., - sections: We were there for pleasure but I could image a company renting the house because there are three separate sections that could be used for break out sessions. - Great patio area that has a lovely outdoor couch. - Kurt: Was so helpful and thoughtful. I noticed he had a skateboard and the the next thing I know I am out skating. - Towels / blankets / paper towels / toilet paper all with extra located where you can find them. Can't say enough about the hospitality shown by Kurt.

Seriously the best VRBO experience yet! Kurt made every effort to ensure that my family and some local guests felt welcomed and taken care of every single day of our stay. The home is immaculate and is lacking for nothing! We had many evenings on the back patio with Thanksgiving crowds and this home, combined with Kurt's passion for making the stay perfect gave us a week to remember :) The kitchen is FULLY stocked (who has chafing dishes when you need them? Kurt!) The patio is seriously right out of a magazine and the beds made me want to not come home to mine! Thank you Kurt for welcoming my family with open arms. Absolutely Perfect!

Charming, historical, so very comfortable. We stayed for Cal Poly's Parent's Weekend. The house was perfect for our family to enjoy time together inside the house and outside in the gardens. Short walk to everything downtown. Although we didn't cook (too many great restaurants in SLO), the kitchen is very well stocked with anything that would be needed to cook a great meal. Kurt was a truly genuine person who is passionate about his property and it shows. The best VRBO we have ever stayed in. Thanks for helping our family build memories.

In a word, AWESOME!

Whether you're visiting SLO for rest and relaxation or for Cal Poly-related purposes, the Mission Orchard Bungalow is an awesome home base. The property consists of the main rental house and two outbuildings, a koi pond, a turtle pond, a gas fire pit and 3 patio areas with comfortable seating for lounging and tables for dining al fresco. The house has been tastefully refurbished and decorated. It was very clean and tidy, with nice, newer bath towels and bed linens. There is a flat screen tv in the first floor living room and in the second floor suite. The kitchen is very well-equipped, a particular plus during the growing season when the garden is full of tomatoes, herbs, figs, and lemons. There is a gas grill and smoker on the patio. If you're headed to the beach, there are beach towels and beach chairs to use. The neighborhood and neighbors are quiet. There is one off-street parking space in the driveway for guests to use and lots of street parking out front. The location is an easy walk or drive to wherever you'd need to go. It's two blocks to Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa and Downtown. Downtown, there are 3 cinemas, as well as a wide variety of retail and restaurants. The beach, many hiking trails, and wine country are a short, easy drive. The Cerro San Luis trailhead is a short walk from the house. As you're walking home from this hike, stop at Lincoln Market for a sandwich and choose a cold craft beer or two from the very large selection in the refrigerator. Stock up the kitchen with groceries from the Thursday Farmer's Market (Downtown), Albertson's, Trader Joe's, Ralph's, Costco, and Whole Foods. If you're setting up your Cal Poly student's dorm room, Target and Costco are 10 minutes away by car; Cal Poly campus is about a 5 minute drive. Kurt, the host/owner, lives onsite in one of the cottages on the property. He's a SLO lifer who's charming, knowledgeable and can help you track down whatever you're looking for in the area. He also offers interesting stories about every feature of his place, from the redwood tree in the driveway, to the "miracle" of how the furniture got to the 2nd floor. During the booking process, Kurt was very prompt returning messages. During our stay he was very accessible. He returned our deposit the day after we checked out. My husband and I stayed here for 10 days in August 2014. We enthusiastically recommend the Mission Orchard Bungalow and hope to visit again soon.

Wonderful time in downtown SLO!

Super easy to find and great location for a stay in SLO. The owner was friendly and helpful and the property and house was clean and family friendly. We went for a wedding but we want to go back when we can spend more time hanging out in town and relaxing at the house, perhaps BBQ-ing and enjoying the koi and turtle in the pond.

Great vacation rental

Rented this house in SLO with my family over Christmas break (5 adults). The house was fantastic and exactly as I had envisioned from other reviewers. The house has two bedrooms with double beds downstairs + a study that has a single daybed. The attic is one large room with a double bed and an entertainment center. Pros: - Kurt is a very helpful owner. Whatever I needed, he either found it in the house for me or brought it over. - The house has everything you need, just like you would have at home. Tons of appliances, cookware, fully outfitted office, outdoor garden with seating areas and heat lamps, large dining room table. - As other reviewers mentioned, the kitchen is ridiculously pimped out. I cooked Christmas dinner and had no problem. I needed a slow cooker -- the house had 2. There are tons of dishes and cookware. The breakfast nook is a great place to hang out, and the kitchen island has stools for people to graze on food as it comes off the stove. - The house is walking distance from downtown San Luis Obispo and a short drive to a lot of great hiking and beaches. Cons: - The attic bedroom can get a little cold in the winter. Kurt offered and was kind enough to bring us extra blankets from another location. - The attic bedroom is accessed by a spiral staircase that's pretty steep and narrow. It wouldn't be appropriate to put small children or elderly folks up in the attic. Even lugging carry-on suitcases up there was a challenge. - The living room on the 1st floor is not super huge. It really only has one couch, which is too bad because the fireplace is very nice and the entertainment setup is pretty sweet (Roku,PC, Flat Screen TV, stereo). But you could always go up to the attic for more room. Don't get hung up on the Cons, though, because the place is an excellent place for a getaway.

Delightful Stay

My wife and I stayed here for a week for a family wedding, joined for part of the time by our two adult daughters, my mother, and my sister and her family. There was plenty of room for all. It is a very nice bungalow, with a gourmet-friendly kitchen, lovely dining room in addition to an eating area off the kitchen, and a nice living room. The bedrooms and baths were comfortable and well furnished. The upstairs bedroom and living area gives it a lot of flexibility. The yard is fantastic, with a koi pond and a nice sitting area right behind the bungalow. It is in a quiet residential area, but a very easy walk to the vibrant downtown and easy access to major roadways. The owner is very pleasant and helpful. We would certainly not hesitate to return, and are glad to give it our highest recommendation.

Can't Wait to Come Back!

My family and I stayed in the Peach Street Bungalow for Thanksgiving. We can't say enough about how wonderful our stay was. We enjoyed our Thanksgiving dinner outside by the waterfall/pond under the warmth of the heat lamps. Every amenity and more was there to meet our needs, and Kurt was beyond hospitable and wanted to ensure our weekend was very special. Downtown SLO was even closer than we had anticipated and there were several delicious wineries nearby. By far one of the most memorable Thanksgivings we've ever had. We highly recommend staying here, and we can't wait to come back!

Weekend Getaway

What a great bungalow house! Kurt really did a fabulous job of making us (a group of 4 friends) feel relaxed and at home. The property is ideally located for taking walks into downtown, freeway access and a launch point for some great cycling. Two of our group literally never left the property in that the backyard/patio/koi pond area was so inviting and relaxing - they got their R&R. Myself and another friend took advantage of the great weather and cycled all weekend. Kurt tipped us off to an awesome Saturday morning Farmers Market at Madonna Center, and we ate all our meals at home, because the kitchen was so well stock with literally anything a cook needed: rice cooker, mega-blender (we had kale, banana and blueberry smoothies!) ... and everything was quality cookware, too! Kurt's home was so relaxing with comfy beds and lovely decor. But that backyard was really the show piece in our opinion. Kurt was uber helpful and always available by phone/email in case we had any questions/concerns. Funny story: we told him the next morning that the French press had a crack in it and an hour later, he comes swooping in on his skateboard carrying a new French press! Come stay at the Bungalow House - you will be recharged!

Charming, comfortable and a great place to catch up with friends

I kidnapped my husband to meet friends there for a surprise birthday celebration and a few days of catching up. The private rear yard has lovely areas for breakfast in the garden, a glass of wine in the shade, toasting marshmallows by the fire pit, and yoga by the koi pond (though the fish wondered what we were doing). The home is very well appointed, with a great, fully equipped kitchen which we took full advantage of, comfortable living areas, and very comfy beds. The host was very friendly and helpful, and recommended some great local wineries for tastings and touring. It's a short stroll to the center of town, the mission, and the Thursday night farmers' market, and there's easy access to 101 for day trips (not that you can hear it).

Adorable house two blocks from the heart of SLO

A group of friends and I just stayed here for the weekend for a friends wedding and got lucky to of found this amazing house. This cute bungalow is close to downtown, which makes it idea if you like to using walking as your main source of transportation. If you plan on entertaining like we did for friends or family then you have struck gold. The kitchen is equiped with every pan, utensil and wine glass you can possible imagin not to mention a outdoor sitting area and beautiflul landscaped gardens. The beds were so comfty and the rooms are nicely decorated. If I had my way I would pack up my bags and move in. We had friends stay at a few other house listed and ours was by far the best, you cant beat the location.

family with adult children weekend reunion

San Luis Obispo is a traditional vacation get away spot for our family. My husband and I attended Poly and our grown children are in San Francisco and Orange County so this was a perfect halfway meeting place. The bungalow was so nice, even nicer than the beautiful pictures online. We had lots of room inside and outside. We made use of the bbq and great outdoor space with beautiful gardens, koi pond and heat lamps (which were wonderful in the evening). The living areas and bedrooms are roomy as well as very clean and serene. The large dining room was fun for family dinners and the kitchen was large and great for cooking and casual meals. Our host was very friendly and helpful. We really felt at home in this beautiful house and can't wait to return soon. Much thanks!

Perfect in Every Way

I have to agree with the previous poster. Our family has stayed in vacation rentals in over 15 countries, and this was definitely one of the best. The location is nice, easy walking distance to everything. The house is super cute and furnished with a mixture of great antiques and lovely modern accents. The beds are really comfy with high-end linens. We loved the kitchen too. Everything was immaculately clean and very well cared for. The best part however might be the gardens of the home which featured really nice outdoor seating areas. Finally, the owner was a joy to deal with, really nice and super accommodating. We will for sure be back!

People who visit the Mission Orchard House always say, "You'd never know that a property like this exists so close to downtown." While the location really is amazing, it's the old world charm of the house and tropical oasis in the backyard that make the property so special.
