Step back in time at Fernledge, one of Montreat's original homes, offering heritage charm and a peaceful setting just a short walk from Lake Susan, Montreat Conference Center, and scenic trails. With its shaded lot, old-school character, and spacious layout, this five-bedroom home is ideal for retreats, conferences, or mountain getaways with friends and family.

About the Home
• Well-appointed kitchen with gas range, dishwasher, prep-island, and drip-style coffee maker
• Living room with cable TV and nearby dining area with seating for 8
• Covered front porch with ceiling fans and a variety of seating to enjoy tranquil Montreat

Important to Note: Fernledge does not have air conditioning, but there are ceiling fans in each room and a whole-house fan. Sheets and towels are not provided, but can be rented from Greybeard Rentals if added to the reservation no later than 1 week before arrival. This house is dog-friendly, with a $100.00 non-refundable fee per dog (maximum of two). Sorry, this home is not cat-friendly due to common allergies.

During the summer, Montreat Conference Season - typically June through August - the home rents weekly. Mid-August through May, the home has a minimum 3-night stay, and there is a 4-night minimum for holidays.

Thanksgiving celebration

Family unanimous with loving this house and area for holiday week. Black Mountain/Montreat/Asheville resilient after storm, shops, cafes, businesses open. House is well loved and comfortable for family groups, clean as a whistle.

Fernledge Vacation

We enjoyed the charm of a home built in 1917 with modern conveniences. The quiet and beauty of the surroundings, front porch, wood burning stove, carport for parking and unloading and close proximity to Black Mountain were all added benefits.

Fernledge After-Christmas Family Trip

Cozy stay

I rented this house for my family of 5 and my mom, 2 sisters and 1 brother in law. We rented for an October wedding in Old Fort and the rehearsal dinner was in Asheville so this was the perfect in-between spot. The house is in a beautiful neighborhood within walking distance to lovely hiking trails. We did the lookout mountain trail vial rainbow road hike and there were amazing views from the top and we could walk to the trail head from the house!!! The house was perfect as my mom is 85 and the main floor queen bedroom with ensuite was perfect to make her very comfortable. The beds are very comfortable and the kitchen is well equipped although we did not cook there other then breakfast. I would highly recommend this house, the large front porch was the best part of this house!!! It was cool that each bedroom upstairs had a sink in each room. This made the line for the bathroom at night non existent. Again, I would highly recommend this VRBO.

Relaxing place

Beat the heat!

We had a lovely time in this comfortable, historic home. Very quaint as well as convenient to have a sink in every bedroom despite it being only two baths and five bedroom property. No worries! Kitchen well appointed. Front porch a true magnet for our family all day and evening! Wonderful availability of a range of hikes nearby. Tennis courts at the bottom of the hill open to the public. This home has dated but comfortable, well kept furnishings.

Girls Weekend Getaway

We really enjoyed the location of the property and the charm of the house. Very spacious and a lot of amenities. Very clean and comfortable. Only thing missing from the kitchen was a working coffee maker. We were only there 3 nights so not a big deal. Would recommend to a large group for sure.

We had no problems getting to the house and very much enjoyed our stay. Greybeard was great, and even checked to make sure the house was warm during a freeze warning. All the info for driving, checking in, and checking out was provided and had no problems whatsoever with the instructions given. Would like to thank Greybeard and the owners of Fernledge for making our vacation easy and convenient!

The house worked out beautifully with great dining and living space and plenty of sleeping space. Two bathrooms is a bit tight when multiple teenagers are involved, but everything worked out great. Staying in the middle of July, we made use of the many fans throughout the house, including the attic fan to keep the house cool and didn't miss the a/c at all. Thank you for a wonderful week!

New Year's Rental

Located 10-15 minutes from downtown Asheville, Black Mountain is a quaint town with many great shopping options, delicious restaurants, breweries and access to hiking trails and wilderness areas. TripAdvisor named Black Mountain one of America's Prettiest Towns in 2017. Asheville is home to award-winning restaurants, stunning mountain views with access to areas like the Blue Ridge Parkway, The Biltmore Estate, and a variety of local art and culture. Oh, and did we mention Asheville has had the record for having more breweries per capita than any other U.S. city? We held the title for Beer City USA in 2009. Hiking trails are also located throughout western North Carolina.
