  • This is a true retreat. Rustic and remote yet so clean and comfortable.

"We stayed for 3 nights at Huckleberry hideaway in the off season (mid-march). It was everything we had hoped for and more - the perfect place to get away from it all. Joanna pays attention to every detail. Everything was spotlessly clean and tidy and she even had baked us a delicious banana bread and set up a fire ready to be lit in the wood stove. Particularly memorable were the sunset views from the balcony porch and star gazing in the private hot tub each night. The drive to Acadia is easy and worth it for the loveliness of the cabin. We regret that we were so busy exploring Acadia that we didn't have time to spend on the property grounds - an old granite quarry. Highly recommend this place to anyone who wants a quiet sanctuary away from the crowds and traffic of the island."

"Unbelievable! Superlative; a perfect solution to our dream vacation in Maine. Located in an area surrounded by secluded harbor towns with NO traffic lights! One hour by car to travel to Bar Harbor and Acadia. The view from the house of the cove at sunrise, the ocean at dusk...and stars in the sky at night are breathtaking. The house is off the road and surrounded by mature trees at the edge of the typical rocky coast. The interior decorations, layout are as described and you feel you are "down East". The housekeeping is immaculate, clean and fresh . The decor is detailed with appointments, are picture perfect and yet homey...yet like visiting family. The welcome with wine and the friendship bread was a pleasant surprise. Hanging out, relaxing in the Adirondack chairs, sipping wine...and having time to converse or just read a book...lounge in the hammock and nap...all with a breeze and scent of salty air! Thankful to be away from it all. The desktop photo on my computer now is the photo of the ocean and rocky shore from the house! Views for everywhere are keepers. And what is a vacation without special food adventures? At the house, the kitchen featured CuisinArt, cast iron and a gigantic lobster pot and is well stocked, great for steamed lobster dinners in; or for that occasional special romantic evening dining in. We found lobster available fresh off the boats in the harbor at reduced prices only found in Maine. We had our Boxer/Lab dog along and enjoyed local restaurants for breakfast on occasion, lunches on the wharf, and dinners on the friendly as well. The location provides opportunities to play tourist at Acadia and Bar Harbor, or just enjoy watching the activity of the lobster boats in the harbors, a visit to U.S. Bell...for a dinner bell or quilt? How about lunch on the wharf at Corea Harbor? The locals are friendly and very helpful. Sally is a superb hostess; we travel often and she is outstanding in her professional yet personal manner in providing responsive, timely support and recommendations. We plan to return...the greatest complement we can offer. Thank you for the perfect, memorable vacation location."

  • A lovely vacation gathering place with just the right touch of " Downeast Maine woodsy"!

"We were four women getting together to celebrate our 40 year friendship ( and a birthday) who spent an incredibly wonderful week at this great property. Because we had so much to catch up on with each other, we probably spent more hours at the house than most folks would while vacationing Downeast. This comfy home allowed us to be together while offering us individual private space at the same time. Mornings were spent drinking coffee on the sunny deck, while evenings were enjoyed relaxing in the screened porch. The kitchen was functional and provided all that we needed. The bedrooms were good sized with some storage available and everyone slept well. We found the bathroom to be a little challenging for four women to share due to limited space and storage but we applied more of a "dormitory" approach for the week with success. We loved the location of the house (take it slow on the driveway) and appreciated the availability of kayaks and bikes although we opted to not use them. We were inspired by the natural area this home sits within. From the deck we watched the rise and fall of the tide, listened to the wind in the trees, viewed a variety of birds and witnessed an American Bald Eagle in flight, twenty feet above our heads (twice)! Time spent in the Schoodic Point part of Acadia National Park, on a Bar Harbor Ferry ride, riding in a horse drawn cart along the famous Carriage Roads in Bar Harbor, experiencing a "Tasting" at Bartlett Winery, picking wild blueberries at the Petite Manan Sanctuary, visiting the cats and dogs being cared for at The Ark Animal Shelter in Cherryfield, attending the Winter Harbor Lobster Festival and photo-op wandering through the local towns, discovering "the perfect picnic spot", and unexpected wildlife viewing (Mom & Baby deer feeding on apple trees, fox hunting in a field, eagles in tall pine trees and harbor porpoise during the ferry crossing.....) were our "To Do" options located close to the house, all easy day trips. The owners of this property provide folks with a terrific home for a Maine vacation. I spoke directly with Joan on several occasions. She responded to my inquiries and requests in a timely and helpful manner. She truly wanted to provide a wonderful week for us in her vacation home. When I individually asked each of my travel companions if they would stay there again, the response was a unanimous "AYUH"! So, consider this four 5 star reviews in one and know we'll be back again one day!"

  • Perfect Getaway

"We had a great week at Surchin's End. The cottage was all we had hoped for -- peaceful, spacious, comfortable, thoughtfully decorated and equipped, lovely. Just right for cooking, eating in, and planning our next adventure. A tranquil water and mountain view from the deck, Adirondack chairs near the water, interesting books and places to read and write, and wonderful artwork throughout made this a special place that felt like home. The location was quite convenient -- great for exploring all that the Schoodic area has to offer, but close enough to Bar Harbor and MDI for day trips and dinners. I especially recommend checking out the Frenchman's Bay Conservancy's map of short hikes and the Park Service's new bike/multi-use trails at Schoodic Woods. The Schoodic area is beautiful, quiet, and restorative. We hiked up Baker Hill, which has spectacular views of Frenchman's Bay, and saw only one other person. There were more things to see and do than we could cram into a week, and we hope to return."
