"My last review of Hidden Pond was submitted for a wintertime visit (see Winter Wabi-sabi Weekend Getaway); a retreat so well loved that I decided to return for a summertime experience. Since my last assessment was focused mainly on the cottage itself, I will refrain from repeating those same comments this time and instead focus on location and activities. Suffice it to say the house remains as charming as ever with the added bonus of a wifi upgrade. (Thank you Jenifer!)
In my opinion, this cottage could not be situated more perfectly. Although it appears to be quietly tucked away in the woods, it is actually only minutes from the highway and maybe a five minute drive to Meijer’s store, gas stations, etc. But the main attraction for me is its close proximity to Grand Mere State Park and beach. As a lover of dogs, nature and travel, I search for places on earth such as this. I, along with my human and canine companions, had a glorious day at this beach that seems mostly untouched by civilization. There are no concession stands, no beach gear rentals and no obnoxious crowds; just water, sand, dunes, artsy pebbles, and wild grass. Aahh nature.
After we had enough sun and sand for the day, Hidden Pond was there to welcome us back home. I can’t speak for everyone, but I am famished after a day at the beach and this place calls for fun collaborative culinary efforts. The large kitchen provides ample space for preparing fresh summer salads and tropical drinks while the deck serves as a stage for outdoor grilling and gathering around a meal with those you love. While some of us cut fruit and veggies, others lit up the charcoal and watched over the sizzling meats with the noise of laughter from a softball game transpiring in the large yard. Conclude this day with a moonlit walk back to the beach where you watch a display of shooting stars descend in the sky and you set yourself up with one of those moments in time when you realize you are experiencing perfection.
I will end this review with a few recommendations to those who wish to seek their own perfect moments at Hidden Pond and Grand Mere. Wear water shoes to protect feet against beach pebbles. Do not haul unnecessary things to the beach as there is some hiking involved. Bring an insulated backpack (I like Picnic Time backpacks) filled with drinks and snacks. I also like the zip up picnic blankets with carry handles. I found the mosquito repellent adhesive stickers to work very well too. Enjoy!"
