  • Our first OBX vacation

"This was our first visit to OBX and the Saltbox was a prime location. We enjoyed the 3rd floor deck each morning and the the west side provided glimpses of the sunsets on the sound. I would wake each morning to catch the sunrise and out to the dock on the sound for the sunset. I got some phenomenal photos! The house was perfect for our family of 3, the woodwork throughout the house is charming. The only minor thing I had was the AC unit filters were in desperate need of cleaning. So I cleaned them all well so they ran more efficiently. I was missing a "dust pan" as I was a bit obsessive to keep the beautiful wood floors clean. We fell in love with Salvo and hope to return again! Thank you Colin for sharing your lovely place with us!"

  • A Perfect Getaway

"My wife and I needed a few days reprieve and decided on a weekend away in the Outer Banks. She used to come to Corolla as a child so we looked there at first, but were so lucky to find this gem instead! Duck in the spring is simply fantastic and uncrowded; everything we wanted in our retreat. The house, in a word, perfect. Perfect size, perfect location, perfect amenities, perfectly furnished and stocked. Being that it was just two of us, we had our choice of the four bedrooms. My goal for the weekend was not to be relegated to the room with two double beds. ;-) I think the house could get crowded with too many people, but it felt like a great size for groups up to 6. The upstairs was homey and beachy and set the tone for the weekend. The exposed beams really gave a great feel to the great room. The kitchen had everything we needed from the coffee maker to some great pans and a sharp knife which helped immensely preparing blackened Ahi with a tomato-onion relish. The hot tub was an added bonus and not something to which we normally have access: we took advantage of time to soak our cares away. (Which offset the 45 degree ocean quite nicely, but that's March in the mid-Atlantic for you :-) ) The location of the house gave us quick access to everything we wanted to do. We could easily walk to the beach for morning sunrises, trying not to disturb the deer which we saw each day, and everything in Duck was less than a mile walk down the boardwalk. We never had to fire up the car once we arrived - we simply walked to get mid-morning coffee (at Treehouse Coffee!), lunch (Cravings), groceries (Tommy's Market, with fabulous cookies), and dinner (EASTSIDE!!!!). We're both pretty active, so we bicycled up to Corolla one day, and had great running routes down into Southern Shores each day. Working with the owners was fantastic - they could not have been more helpful. If you're lucky enough to find availability that matches your schedule, this house will not disappoint!"

  • Can I Come Back Right Now?

"I've stayed at several houses in the Outer Banks, and I loved this one. Great setup, unique style, lots of convenient features. The tap water has a lot of iron in it, and some of the windows are still without screens, but this wasn't a huge issue for us. We stayed for our honeymoon, and when we walked in, the owners had a bottle of champagne and some chocolates for us, in addition to a sample of local tea, some travel hygiene products, and a tide chart, and some water bottles. I'm not sure if the chocolate and champagne was a special touch because they knew we were honeymooning, but the rest of the welcome package was very thought out and convenient (especially the drinking water, due to the tap situation). They also sent us a bunch of info before our trip, and had a binder with all the information in it (restaurants, activities to do without leaving the 4x4 area, and basic info about the house). I love coming to the same home when I stay on the Banks because it makes me feel even more at home, and I'm so glad I found this one. It's a keeper."
