  • Fantastic stay at the Bell's Cottage on the Hill!

"Fantastic stay at the Bell's Cottage on the Hill! Our group has been coming to the Outer Banks for over 20 years, but our stay in Manteo was a welcomed change. It offered a slower pace, good restaurant selection and attractions, proximity to shopping, and a chance to experience the benefits of the Roanoke Sound. Expansive decks offered a peaceful and relaxing experience, as they seem to float among the trees on the hill. The short nature hike to the beach was well worth the trek: secluded beaches, calm, shallow waters, and access to the kayaks, umbrella, and chairs that awaited us. Our Golden Retriever in the group thoroughly enjoyed herself too! The cottage is beautifully decorated and well-appointed. June and Quentin are the perfect hosts who have thoughtfully planned for the comfort and convenience of their guests. Our group is planning a fall trip to the cottage, and hope to return next summer!"

  • Sanctuary

"What a lovely home-away-from-home, but without the daily reminders of chores and obligations. This lovely loft cottage is located a short stroll from the waterfront shops, restaurants and park and a short drive (or intrepid bike ride) to beach. If it rains, you will not mind hanging out in this place. It is sweetly and tastefully appointed and immaculate! And if you do have perfect weather, you will be sure to spend time on the private deck on days you don't feel like running around. I would definitely come back to this place."

  • Feels like home--only so much better!

"Magnolia Cottage is a delight! Of course, it was clean, comfortable, and convenient...but so much more. The cottage was lovingly and often whimsically decorated, from the beautiful china, stemware, and flatware to the display of vintage costumes in the upstairs bedroom. Everywhere I looked I found a feast for the eyes: little details like the handpainted wardrobes and chests of drawers, antiques, and lovely roses in the manicured gardens. The bedrooms were perfect, with comfortable fine linens and beautiful spreads and pillows. Although there is much to experience in Manteo (we especially enjoyed the Lost Colony character dinner, the sunset sail, and Jockeys Ridge), my favorite moments involved being on the lovely back porch, sipping wine, gazing at the stars, and talking for hours with my two friends. We want to return to this enchanting cottage many times!"

  • Beautiful condo but be ready for a few hours of early morning cleaning before you check out

"Jeanine was very nice to talk to during the whole process. She was helpful in providing restaurant & sight-seeing recommendations. The condo was clean, spacious, updated and in a very convenient location. Having a lot of space is convenient on days you're stuck in the condo due to rain. We were able to watch the July 4th fireworks right outside the condo. Outdoor deck surrounded the unit. That was also our favorite part especially in the morning & evenings. She was very responsive with all the requests. She also installed wifi before we arrived. We had an issue regarding a credit card fee charge where she deducted 2% from our deposit but was resolved through VRBO's help. Parking was also convenient. Many restaurants & activities are nearby & we were able to quickly get to Nags Head. The unit is situated in a quiet neighborhood perfect for couples & families. The downside is the same as others have noted. The amount of laundry & cleaning that was required was VERY unreasonable considering we paid $100 for cleaning & checkout was at 10:00 a.m. (we had the cleaning lady knocking on our door at 9:40 a.m.) She requires all sheets, blankets & towels to be washed, dried & folded and all dishes washed & put away. We started the process at 6:00 a.m. Drying towels takes longer during high humidity. My husband & I shared a towel on the last morning to avoid having too many to wash. She also had 2 pages of other instructions. The dumpster for the garbage was far away from the unit & we had difficulty in getting the garbage into the dumpster. My husband and I have rented many units through VRBO, Homeaway, Flipkey & Airbnb and this by far required the most work and yet we were still charged $100 cleaning fee. My sister who stayed with us from Seattle is also a traveler & found the requirements ridiculous. If she can provide the cleaning lady an extra set of linens for the next guest (she can always use a drop off laundromat for the dirty set), have people pay the numbers they see on the reservation page with no surprises (all fees should appear on that page & not within the property description - raise the rent if you need to net a certain amount) and ease up on the 2-page checkout instructions which are mailed, emailed & left in the unit, this would be the perfect rental."
