Newton Fork Ranch's Timber Haus Cabin is a Magical Experience!
- Minimum stay:N/A

Our Timber Haus cabin is one of six real log cabin rentals located in a secluded and intimate setting at Newton Fork Ranch. We are a third-generation property located in the very 'Heart of the Black Hills.'
For the adventurous, we have a gate on the property, installed for the exclusive use of our guests, that opens onto the 109-mile Mickelson Hiking & Biking Trail - a favorite among area walkers, bicyclists, and horse enthusiasts. In the winter, it’s a popular destination for cross-country skiers.
If you prefer to stay at the ranch and entertain, a handcrafted picnic shelter, complete with picnic tables and a large gas barbeque is available for our guests' use. It provides a delightful gathering place for friends and families to enjoy an outdoor meal. In addition, each cabin is equipped with its own gas barbeque for mountain dining al fresco.
The Newton Fork Creek meanders through the ranch and, weather-permitting, is alive with pan-size rainbow trout. If you are feeling ambitious, walk next door and pan for gold at Wade’s Gold Mill, a popular destination for visitors in search of an Old West experience.
Newton Fork Ranch is, not only a wonderful base for exploring all that the Hills have to offer, but is also a perfect getaway for those searching for some peace and tranquility in this busy and complex world. We afford our guests an environment left undisturbed by noisy televisions and ubiquitous telephones. During your stay with us, let nature provide the entertainment, let your mind wander, and allow yourself to rediscover the 'art of conversation' with treasured family and friends.

Our family was fortunate to find Newton Fork Ranch and all its pristine splendor. We stayed for 3 nights, 4 days and found the entire visit to be extremely pleasant. We stayed in Granny's Ranch House, the original ranch home built by the owner's grandparents in 1911. The house has been lovingly restored and is full of gleaming wood, period pieces (love the original cookstove and water pump!) and very comfortable furniture. We stayed out of restaurants almost entirely, as the ranch house is completely outfitted with quality kitchen implements. This helped our budget and family connections, alike. Sitting around the picnic table and watching the bubbling brook for trout in the morning, sitting around the large and lovely dining table in the evening-- it really was a good, truly relaxing and peaceful time. You won't find wi-fi and television at the ranch. This is a place to unplug and have a quality, carefree vacation with a loved one, friends or family. The sheer beauty of the place is enough to keep you lingering, watching for deer, pheasants and other wildlife who make their home in the ridged woods on the property. However, you have access to the heart of Hill City just a 1/2 mile down the road and the ranch property opens onto a good bike trail that will take you along the old railroad. (You'll hear the steam whistle of the historic 1880 steam engine in the distance during your stay.) My family thanks Linda, Marianne and everyone who keeps Newton Fork Ranch going. We wouldn't change a thing! PS. We discovered a lack of recycling receptacles throughout South Dakota. Plan ahead to do your own recycling or maybe ask at the ranch. ? We didn't address this and just took care of it ourselves but if there is an option, I'm guessing Linda will know about it. She is a knowledgable, gracious host.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.
Owner response: We are thrilled to hear that you enjoyed your visit to both the Black Hills and to Newton Fork Ranch. We were positively blushing at your many kind words; they were truly music to our ears! Your review has captured what our vision was in creating this “home away from home” for our guests. Regarding the question of recycling, it was attempted years ago in Hill City but dropped because there wasn’t a viable way to transport the recyclable material to Rapid City. We have had many conscientious guests like you make the same request. It is time to revisit the idea and we will make some calls to find if there are other solutions. Again, thank you for your extremely thoughtful and welcomed review of our vacation cabins. We hope you will visit us again in the not-too-distant future! Grandma always looked forward to welcoming guests “home.” So do we!

We are a family of 5 - kids 9, 13, 15. Newton Fork Ranch was a great launching point for all our Black Hills adventures. Access to all the fun stuff the area offers is great. The Mickelson trail runs right through the property. A gold mining/panning operation is within 100 yards of the cabins. Our kids really enjoyed hunting for gold. We felt like we were in the middle of nowhere even though Hill City is less than a mile away. Restaurants, shopping, the 1880 Train, etc are all very close. Of course, only 9 miles to Mount Rushmore and 15 miles to Custer State Park. The cabins are really cute, very clean, new, nicely appointed, and very, very comfortable.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, adventure seekers, families with teenagers.

We have stayed at Newton Fork Ranch twice and can't wait to go back. The cabins are on a large property which makes it very secluded yet close to town for dining, shopping, etc. The property is clean, the owners very helpful and the setting beautiful. I would recommend this to property to anyone.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.
