Eames-Style Country Lake House on 30 Private Acres
- Minimum stay:Contact owner
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:Yes
- Wheel chair accessible:No
This is an 11 year old house built by the owners sited on 30 acres near an old stone sheep herding wall. It's very cozy but open, with radiant heat and one wall of windows (inspired by the Charles and Ray Eames House) looking out towards the lake and hills. The land is beautiful in all seasons. Our 30 acres of woods is on a private road with 3 other properties, one of which is a horse farm.
Downstairs is an open plan with several living areas and a separate 600 square foot gourmet kitchen with a Viking range, dining area and bathroom. Two bedrooms and a bathroom are upstairs. Both bedrooms have panoramic views of the lake and land. There are bunk beds and a toddler bed in one bedroom and a queen bed in the other.
Our 30 acres are private but we share our 20 acre lake with 3 other properties and local fauna, which is abundant and includes deer, turkeys, chipmunks, beaver, turtles, lizards and a variety of birds.
Bike the 1.5 miles into town and have lunch, play tennis, buy antiques or check out what's happening at the Spencertown Academy. Five miles will get you to Chatham for restaurants, movies and shopping.
Columbia County has become a mecca for the local and organic food movement. Food shopping is unrivaled with the Chatham Food Coop 5 miles down the road, nearby is Hawthorne Valley Farm where we get our raw milk, the Berry Farm where we pick our own berries, we visit the lambs when we pick up our yoghurt at the Old Chatham Sheepherding Company, and Grazin' Acres where we meet our beef and chicken. The city of Hudson, 15 miles away & next door to Olana, boasts some of the best restaurants in the Hudson Valley, if not the state. We are regulars at Chatham's Blue Plate, if for no other reason than the bread and tapenade.
More detailed, Hudson-focused information is available at this blog: hungryinhudsonny.
15 minutes to Catamount, 25 to Butternut. Swimming at Copake, Kinderhook, etc., visit the lambs at Chatham Sheep Herding Company, pick berries, apples, etc., or shop in Hudson and Great Barrington. Visit the Shaker Museum, Olana, Tanglewood or Berkshires. Two hours from NYC.
For more info about hiking trails and outdoor sites, visit the Columbia County Conservatory's website and look at the 'public conservation areas'.
Lastly, I just got a Roku Streaming Player for watching Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu, or anything on your laptop, on the large flatscreen TV.

We spent a great week here at the end of July. Beautiful property with lots of privacy and room for the dogs to enjoy. Great open floor plan with fantastic views of woods and lake. Great private lake with access to canoe... some of the best large mouth bass fishing I have ever experienced in Columbia county. We will certainly stay again.Recommended for: Families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway.
Owner response: Thank you Michael! Pleasure having you all!

We spent a lovely winter weekend here - views and walks on the property are wonderful! The house is beautifully designed, clean, comfortable (love those radiant heat floors), and well equipped for children. It's an easy trip to Catamount for skiing, and a cozy place to return to after a day in the snow. We even did a little ice skating on the lake just down the hill from the house. Owners were responsive and very pleasant to work with. A great get-away!Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, romantic getaway.

We just returned from spending a snowy and gorgeous New Year's in Spencertown and can't say enough about this beautiful home. The house manages to be both spacious and cozy (oh, how I've fallen in love with those radiant heat floors) and couldn't be more child and dog friendly. We loved sledding just behind the house, had long hikes through the woods, enjoyed trips to Chatham and Hudson, and were also so happy to be indoors and look out at the snow. The kitchen was a dream and I loved cooking there. Many thanks to the kind owners who were so easy to work with and did everything they could to make us feel at home.Did you find this review helpful? Our family (& our dog) met at this beautiful property during the last weekend of October 2009. It was exactly what we were looking for in terms of a peaceful, restful location with all the amenities. The house is perfect for a famliy. The kitchen is gorgeous and the views from all the expansive windows are just beautiful, We walked the peaceful property and enjoyed visiting the nearby towns for the farmer's markets and nice restaurants. We plan to enjoy this location again. Thank you!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

This is a great property with a very special house full of character. Very spacious and well suited for children. Extremely quiet and right in the nature with free roaming wildlife to watch from the windows. Adding one of the best counties in the state makes this the ideal family retreat.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We recently stayed early summer. The house is beautiful and quite spacious with great light. Mornings were the best and there was always a nice breeze. With all of the windows you can see so many animals right on the property - birds, deer, turtles and more. It's a great place to cook and enjoy local organic food. The surrounding area also has great restaurants and plenty of art, hiking and entertainment. Most of all, you just feel like you are at home as anything you need is there. The owners are very friendly and easy to access if you have questions. A great place to stay if you are interested in exploring Columbia County, especially if you want to balance privacy and quiet with a wide range of activities.Did you find this review helpful? Owner info
Year Purchased: 1999
About the owner: We live in NYC and have several children. We built the house before we had the first one so we just had no idea what our needs would be. The kids love the country, but between weekend soccer and endless birthday parties, it's getting hard to get up there very often. We miss it, but appreciate the income.
Why the Owner Chose Spencertown:
We looked at the Hamptons, but didn't want a suburban experience and could not afford to be right on the ocean. Coincidentally, I grew up in NYC with a country house in Hillsdale but my husband just happened to pick Columbia Couty because of the beautiful and reasonable (2 hours) drive up.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
We needed property on the water, so we love having the lake. We also wanted land that was far enough away from a road so that our dog could run around without worrying us. We didn't want to hear the sound of cars wooshing by. And I have to say, every time I get out of the car, I take a deep breath because it smells so very, very good up there. The air feels softer. It's heavenly with a breeze.
