Bee Cave Road, the main artery through the neighborhood, is lined with shopping centers. Though some are large and corporate, with chain stores and an HEB, most exemplify the spirit of the neighborhood: cleverly designed and working around the city's strict sign ordinances. The best local spots here have the low-key vibe you would expect from Austin. Check out the neighborhood favorite restaurant Las Palomas for excellent interior Mexican, or The Grove wine bar and restaurant for an upscale romantic evening. Other hot dining spots include Bistro 88, with its contemporary and eclectic pan-Asian menu, and Wildwood Art Cafe, which features Oaxacan art as well as a gluten-free menu.
Westlake is also a great place to head outdoors, whether it's driving down to nearby Zilker Park to spend a day at the Botanical Gardens, to ride the train or to Barton Springs, where the chilly natural spring fed pool is an Austin favorite. Or if that water is too cold head over to Lake Austin to Blue Sky Boat Rentals and go boating for the day. You can easily also head over the western edge at Capital of Texas Highway to check out the Wild Basin Nature Preserve. This beautiful 277 acre preserve is absolutely pristine, and features countless nature trails as well as self-guided tours daily. This neighborhood is also home to one of Austin's most poplar outdoor areas, the Barton Creek Greenbelt, which is located on Capital of Texas Hwy across from Barton Creek Mall. Take the afternoon to just kick back and enjoy the sun with a few friends - you won't regret it.
Though you may not think of a hardware store as an attraction, two of Austin's best are located on Bee Cave Road in Westlake: Cornerstone and Breed & Co. You'll find far more than basic tools here, with cooking supplies, china, home decor, art, and gifts; Breed & Co. in particular is a great place to go for gift ideas around the holidays.
