Franklin house description
Follow the tracks to Bearfoot Lodge! Our beautiful, comfortable, and affordable vacation home is just as perfect for a memorable holiday gathering or a big family reunion as it is for a couple’s getaway or a secluded writer's or artist's retreat. We offer a military discount.
Bearfoot Lodge is located at an elevation of 3,500 feet in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. With an almost-360 degree view, Bearfoot Lodge claims 'the best view in Macon County,' according to a local realtor. Featuring a wraparound deck, Bearfoot Lodge looks out on the neighboring mountains and lush, peaceful valleys of the Appalachian foothills. The home’s backyard is the Nantahala Forest and nearby Appalachian Trail.
Our two-story home is equally ready for either your big family party or your quiet escape from life’s pressures. From the large wrap around deck, you have a spectacular view of layers upon layers of blue-on-blue mountains. Upstairs, Bearfoot Lodge features a beautifully furnished family room with gas fireplace; full dining area and gourmet kitchen with breakfast bar. There are two bedrooms (1 king and 1 queen) and 2 full bathrooms. The family room overlooks and opens onto the deck.
Downstairs is a den stocked with board games, books, VCR/DVDs, a keyboard and rocking chairs. In summer 2013 we will add a full-size futon. There is one queen bedroom and one full bathroom. An additional finished room houses 3 rollaway beds and a double inflatable mattress. There is also a full laundry room and access to outside.
Other amenities in the house include central heat and air; satellite dish and VCR/DVD player; stereo and CD player; microwave and dishwasher; barbeque grill; and washer and dryer. All linens supplied.
But best of all is the view! Spend your mornings on the deck watching the sun climb over rosy-peaked mountains or enjoying the shimmering hummingbirds that visit the feeders. Rock the afternoons away listening to wind in the treetops or watching dozens of goldfinches. Keep your eyes open for rabbits, wild turkey and deer. As the sun sets into blue mist and fireflies appear, gaze into the brilliant, star-studded sky and identify your favorite constellations.
Interested in things to do? Our house is perfectly located for just about anything you have in mind. Situated on a mountaintop several miles off of HWY 441, Bearfoot Lodge is away from it all, but close to lots of fun things to do.
In Otto, check out the little labyrinth, kayak on the Little Tennessee River, and grab some fresh, delicious milk, cheese and ice cream from the dairy. South, in Dillard, Ga, enjoy shopping for antiques, mountain souvenirs, and savor a country meal at the famous Dillard House. A little further south and you'll see the turn off for Betty's Creek, which will take you to the beautiful property of the Hambidge Center, an artists' retreat on over 350 acres. About 15 miles south of Dillard is the charming mountain city of Clayton. Stroll the main street of the historic downtown. Explore the bird shop and check out the store full of vintage appliances --some going back to the early 20th century. Enjoy a yummy sandwich and wine from Tiger Mountain vineyard at Grapes & Beans, or a delicious dinner at Rumor Hazit. Going North on 441; you're less than ten miles from Franklin. On the way up, check out the gem mining. Once in downtown Franklin, you can enjoy all kinds of shopping and sightseeing in this lovely mountain town. Friday nights may feature a concert in the park or live music. Franklin has a rich history with connections to the Cherokee Indians and to Scottish settlers.
There are a number nearby trails to hike, besides the beautiful roadway that leads up to our mountain. The famous Appalachian Trail has entrances throughout the area. A recently completed Greenway follows the Little Tennessee River which runs through Franklin. You can hike or bike for several miles along the river. There is also white water rafting, good fishing for mountain trout and viewing of some of the gorgeous waterfalls. Franklin is known as the “Gem Capital of the World” and there are several ruby mines where you can pan for rubies and emeralds. Franklin is also your gateway to many of the mountains’ most famous towns and sights such as Dillsboro, Waynesville and Asheville.
Any time of year is perfect for a stay at Bearfoot Lodge. In the spring the mountain laurel, tulips and redbuds pop out; in the summer the cool mountain air calms the nerves and hummingbirds visit the deck daily; in the autumn the hillsides blaze up in orange and gold; and if you visit at Christmas or New Years you have a good chance of having a white Christmas.
This is our only vacation rental property. Our family personally manages it. We maintain it in excellent condition because we also stay here when we come to the mountains. We have been renting our house for over 10 years and our guests tell us they never want to leave. Many come back year after year to de-stress and re-charge. We would love to share “the best view in Macon County” with you. You’ll be glad you ventured off the beaten path and settled in at Bearfoot Lodge.

HEAVEN ON EARTH
HEAVEN ON EARTH
What a wonderful place to get away from it al!! Bear Foot Lodge soon becomes a world that you don't want to leave. The most memorable part of the Lodge for us was the porch. We spent every moment we could, on the porch, looking down into the majestic valleys and at the mountains of the Highlands. The first day we arrived at Barefoot Lodge we discovered a fawn in the flower bed. She ran away at first but soon became use to us and stayed! This is my sixth time to the area and after staying at Bearfoot Lodge I know where I'm coming back to vacation at next year. Thanks for having us!

Recommended for: Romantic getaway, people with disabilities, families with teenagers, age 55+, families with young children, sightseeing, adventure seekers, girls getaway.
Owner response: The view from the porch really is magnificent and it changes almost every day. We can't wait for the fall colors to start showing themselves in September/October. The deer seem to love our property--and we think they are little "dears!"
The view says it all! We sat back and looked at the view from Bearfoot Lodge in awe. Each time of day was our favorite. We finally decided on early morning and late afternoon. The house was very comfortable and inviting (and clean). The owners were helpful and extremely accomodating. The photos and directions were accurate. We would recommend Bearfoot Lodge to anyone looking for a beautiful mountain retreat.

The best of Bearfoot
lutzman (Tampa, Fl) Bearfoot Lodge was exactly what the description said it would be from the moment I stepped onto the deck. The rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable. Spending time on the deck looking out at the beautiful Smoky Mountains was a breath-taking experience. I would definately recommend Bearfoot to friends and family. Bearfoot is a great place for couples on a honeymoon or a family with kids.

Thanksgiving escapeGuest comment entered by owner
Awesome scape getaway! (Tampa, FL, USA) I had a great time at Bearfoot Lodge! It had all the comfort and amenities that you could want. The area where the house sits is very peaceful and quiet. I was able to relax and rest. I had a chance to hike in the surroundings areas to the lodge and got to see some wildlife. The lodge is very close to the Town and Franklin and we got to visit 4 of the most popular waterfalls just in one day. For those who like wine tasting, don't miss the Tiger Mountain winery. I enjoyed my stay during the Thanksgiving holidays and hope to return pretty soon with all my family.

About the owner: The Russo and Wofford families own Bearfoot Lodge. We are a fun-loving bunch from Tampa, FL who love any excuse to party or to enjoy new adventures. We love exploring all the fun activities in the mountains as much as we enjoy the serenity our mountain home. Our favorite activities (with number one being sitting on the deck and counting the hummingbirds!) include day hikes in the forest, visiting waterfalls, exploring the mountain roads, and strolling the street of Franklin, Clayton, Dillard. A day trip to Waynesville or Asheville is always special.
Why the Owner Chose Franklin:
Mom Belle Russo and her cousin Nancy Wofford and their husbands Joe and William first discovered the property in the early '90's. It was hidden gem at the top of the world. The entire mountain where the property is located had been owned and worked for generations by the Shope family. The Shopes still live at the base of the mountain near the remains of their old homestead. When Joe Shope released the mountain acreage for building, our property was one of the first to have a house built on it. The view was the deciding factor--it is simply spectacular. Old Mr. Shope befriended the family and would drive the 1.5 miles up the mountain frequently in his pickup truck--followed by his barking dogs--to check on the progress and savor the mountaintop view. Once building began, workers would notice black bear prints in the mud each morning they returned to work. Thus, the house was named 'Bearfoot Lodge.' Our favorite holiday to spend at Bearfoot is Thanksgiving. The hills are orange and gold, the wild turkeys are gobbling, the deer scamper through the woods and the sky is blue like you'll not see anywhere else in the world. There is so much to be thankful for!
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Our house is perfectly located--away from it all on top of the mountain, but close to lots of fun things to do. The entire area is an outdoor lover's treasure trove with opportunities at every turn for hiking, fishing, biking and picnicking. Entrance signs to the Nantahla Forest and the Appalachian Trail are plentiful throughout the area. Other activities include gem mining, white-water rafting and tubing, horseback riding, skiing, golfing, motorcycling, kayaking, sightseeing, and visiting waterfalls, wineries and gardens.
