Lodged in the nostalgic, grassy beach neighborhood of Lower Road right off Cape Cod Bay, this little cottage is a 10-minute walk to the beach. This part of the Cape is about as sweet and quiet as it was 20 years ago. While there are, of course, the big beach houses as you get closer to the water, this neighborhood and the Town of Brewster haven't had the same build-up and ostentatious or over the top wealth that you'll find on other parts of Cape Cod. Brewster was established in 1803, and this neighborhood is less than a mile from the historic buildings built by sea captains in the 1800's, including The Brewster Ladies Library and The Brewster Store, both a short bike ride from the cottage.
The Cottage -
The property is surrounded by conservation land and is a quiet 10-minute walk to the beach (we clocked that with a glass of wine and a dog on a leash). The cottage itself has a secluded backyard that backs on to conservation land, a swing rocking chair, big shady trees, hydrangea bushes, wild grape vines, day lilies, lots of grass for badminton, and a deck with outdoor seating for coffee or dinner, or to watch the fireflies reign over the yard in July. The outdoor shower has easy access from the back entrance so family and friends can keep hanging on the deck post-beach while others shower. The deck has a brand new gas Weber grill and outdoor furniture (a table for 4-6 plus bench seating for visitors).
Fried seafood, ice cream and a liquor store are less than .8 miles down the road. Brewster's shorelines have many bay beaches, and while the closest walk is Saint's Landing, you'll find Mants, Paine's Creek and others a short distance away too. It's not uncommon to see fox, rabbits and other wildlife around. In the the morning, you'll certainly hear the songbirds if you have coffee on the deck or back stoop. Diagonally across the street is Brewster's old cemetery- worth a visit to see old sea captain's burial sites dating back to Brewster's first settlers.
Indoors is cozy and sweet. An open floor plan includes a living room with sofa and sitting chair, books and puzzles and a TV for rainy days. An AC unit for the main room is available for the hottest days. The farm-style kitchen and dining area are adjacent and seat up to 8 for dinner. You'll find what you need to prepare meals including a coffee maker, toaster and microwave. An old sideboard that doubles as a work island always looks and feels great with flowers and summer fruit and berries.
A half bathroom and back entryway have a washing machine and dryer. Right off the back entrance is a clothesline for laundry to dry in the sun.
The back of the cottage has 3 bedrooms, none very big but all very sweet. The master bedroom has (1) queen bed, a back bedroom with (1) full bed, and a front bedroom with (2) twin beds. The master bedroom gets a nice little cross breeze. Fans are in each bedroom plus an AC unit in the master bedroom for hot summer nights. In the thickest of those, we find a late, cool outdoor shower works nice to cool off too. There's a full bathroom and shower/bath indoors in the back hallway for cooler nights and mornings. Each room has a closet and hangers. The cottage is winterized, so if you are here off-season or have a cold night, there is a thermostat to control the heat.
Things to Bring With You and What We Have:
Yes, we have wifi and basic cable.
Linens (sheets and bath towels) are included in July and August rentals. All other rentals have linens available for an additional cost. We have blankets and pillows (all new) for the beds. Bring beach towels, sunscreen, sweatshirts, walking shoes and whatever else you need. The nights can be cold or warm, even in the middle of the summer, so bring what you need for both.
We have the basics for what you need in the kitchen. No big electric mixer if you plan on baking, but a handheld usually does the trick. You don't need to bring things like dishes, pots, pans, or serving stuff. We have plenty of wine and water glasses, and some plastic ware for outdoors or beach drinks.
You'll find window fans in the bedrooms and an AC unit for the front room and the master bed.
For the beach, we have beach chairs and a brand new umbrella, so no need to pack those if your car is getting full.
It's a good idea to bring bug spray. Mosquitos are the biggest pests on any part of the Cape, and we find that spraying under and around the table and deck before hanging out there works pretty well.
The Brewster Store is just under a mile from the cottage and has most provisions you might have forgotten, not to mention some of the cutest souvenirs and best donuts, pastries and penny candy.
The Lower Cape: We are biased, but this part of the Cape is the best part. With the bay beaches in Brewster to the National Seashore and Town ocean beaches in Orleans, Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro and Provincetown you're not far from some of the country's prettiest spots. If you like shopping and arts, we have great galleries, antique stores and boutiques, too. Chatham, Orleans and Wellfleet all have great little Main Street street areas for shopping days, and The Lemon Tree Village in Brewster is right around the corner from the cottage.
The Lower Cape is great for biking. If you're up for a longer ride, The Cape Cod Rail Trail will get you by bicycle all the way to Provincetown, with great coffee, sandwich and beach stops along the way. The Brewster trail entrances are just a few miles from the cottage.
There are great restaurants, sandwich and coffee shops, golf, beaches, ponds, hiking trails, The Museum of Natural History (amazing walking trails and just down the street from the cottage) and Nickerson State Park all nearby.

About the owner: I was born and raised on Cape Cod as a year round resident. My parent's house is just 1.5 miles from this cottage, and they help manage it when I'm traveling. I live year-round in Cambridge, MA, and am away quite a bit for work, but get to the Cape as often as I can, where my parents and extended family still reside in Brewster.
