We had a wonderful time in Italy at this Cortona Farmhouse! Everything about the house was fabulous, the hosts were flexible and extremely helpful! We made day trips to San Marino, Cinque Terre, Pisa and Florence from Cortona. The location is ideal! We also explored Cortona - what a great town! Thank you for your hospitality - we hope to return.

Expansive space, views and easy access to Cortona

  • 5 of 5

The owners have, I think, done further renovations since the description here was written. There are now four bedrooms, three with queen/king beds and a fourth with two twins. There are three bathrooms. There is a modern kitchen allowing for meal preparation for a large number of people. Ample space space for several couples or a large family gathering. My wife and I, our daughter and her boyfriend spent a week here. More than enough room. The owner provides a lot of helpful information ahead of time about the area, restaurants, food shopping. The manager's assistant met us at our car rental location and we followed him to the house. He gave us a tour and pointed out the features and functions. The villa's wine and olive oil available in the cellar were a very nice bonus. Cortona has enough places to eat that you could have lunch and dinner there every day and not run out of choices. Siena, Montalcino and Montepulciano are about an hour away. The owner recommended a driver, Stephano Coltellini of Get Tours who provided a car and driver to take us to a farm cheese tour one day and a wine tasting in Montalcino another day. His services were outstanding. Our only complaint is that we were there for only a week. The Italian people we met were wonderful, warm and welcoming. Everyone in Cortona spoke enough English that we could always get by. All together it was a wonderful trip and we would recommend the villa heartily.

This is a beautiful quiet villa with magnificent views and grounds. A romantic and special property on the hill just below Cortona, Tuscany. All the enchantment and charm that is Tuscany can be found here. We certainly hope to return.

Perfect family stay

  • 5 of 5

We had an absolutely wonderful time at Casa Helena. Our family of five, including three teenagers, stayed here for the better part of two weeks at the end of July / beginning of August. This was the first trip to Europe for the kids, and we left with a lifetime of memories.

We had high expectations for the property, having heard of it from others who had stayed there. These were easily exceeded. Pre-arrival, we had received a detailed guide from the owner, which proved to be incredibly helpful throughout our stay. We were met in nearby Camucia by Stefania, who gave us a tour of the property (and greeted each of us with a very Italian two kisses on the cheek!). During the stay we made very good use of the newly remodeled kitchen and outdoor grill. Fresh vegetables and homemade olive oil and wine from the surrounding grounds complemented our dinners perfectly. Eating well is big for our family, and we couldn't have been more satisfied. We also made good use of the pool -- an excellent way to relax after exploring Cortona and other nearby towns. The views of Cortona from the backyard were absolutely gorgeous.

The location of Casa Helena was likewise perfect. Morning walks up to the town of Cortona were pleasant. We also took day trips to Florence, Lake Tasiemeno (for wake boarding), Castiglione, Sienna, and nearby vineyards for wine tastings. All of these were easily reachable. As this was the kids' first trip, we also took an overnight trip to Rome -- also easily reached with a two hour drive. We did find that having a car was a good idea if you like to explore as we do.

Our experience at Casa Helena was truly wonderful. We will definitely recommend it to friends.

Perfect base for stay in Tuscany

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at Casa Helena. The house is beautiful and the setting is spectacular, with wonderful views of Val di Chiana and Cortona, including the fine church of Santa Maria delle Grazie - pictures cannot capture how beautiful it is. Olive groves and vines surround the house (and yielded olive oil for the kitchen and nice wine from the cantina for our glasses). We picked fresh plums from the trees and found fresh tomatoes on the marble table in the mornings. The house is very comfortable (even in the July heat) and exactly as described in the listing. The owner disclosed every potential problem and we encountered none of them. It was clean and welcoming. You can walk to Cortona itself from the house (doable even on a hot day) and we found it to be a good base to visit other parts of Tuscany (Sienna is an easy day trip) or northern Umbria (Perugia for the Jazz festival). Best of all, the owner is a pleasure to deal with, and provided us with detailed information about the house and Cortona, including excellent restaurant recommendations (Pane e Vino was our favorite), details on where to shop for groceries, and other helpful information. The local manager made sure we were able to find the house even though we arrived quite late on a Sunday night. The pool was very welcome after hot days seeing the sights, and we felt like we could still drink in the best of Tuscany even after we left the tourist spots and came "home" to Casa Helena.

Christmas in Cortona

  • 5 of 5

This was the second time we stayed in this beautiful farmhouse and although it was a different experience being there in winter/December it was a good one. The fireplace in the kitchen made for a spectacular postcard worthy Xmas dinner experience and warmed things up. The views are really amazing and we even had a couple warm enough days to sit outside and admire them. It's a great location for day trips to explore the stunning countryside and close enough to Camucia for groceries etc. Great house for a group of friends (which we were) or a family trip.

Car: recommended

The house is one kilometer outside the walled city of Cortona. There are constant festivals, concerts, art exhibits and wine tastings in town.
