Romantic Oceanfront 20 Minutes From Acadia National Park's Visitor Center

Bedrooms 1
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 - 4 nights

About the property

1 Bedroom with Queen Bed, 1 Full-Size Futon, Sleeps 4, Fully Furnished/Equiped

There is no option available in the web design to adequately describe our rental. If I had the option, I would describe it as a partial house. It is actually an apartment in the ground-floor level of our home. It is the only unit we have because my husband, Larry, and I live on the second story of the house. Since I use a wheelchair, I rarely go to the shore and my husband works five days per week. Consequently, the vast majority of the time our “little piece of heaven,” (as one guest called it), the gazebo and 200 feet of private shore frontage are all entirely yours.

Ideally located right on the shore, our rental is fully furnished and ready to be your seaside home away from home. Drive right up to the boardwalk, unpack your bags, and you will have everything you need to sit back, relax, and enjoy spectacular sunsets. Walk just 75 steps to explore the private beach, swim, launch your kayak, watch for bald eagles, ospreys, loons, seals and dolphins.

Privacy: Experience life on the water in a natural, wooded environment. The lot is natural, secluded and private. You can just barely see our neighbors to the right through the trees, (a retired couple comes intermittently). There is a small log cabin to the left that is used off and on during the summer. It is usually so quiet you can hear the loons, sea gulls, palliated woodpeckers and owls right from your bed when the windows are open. If the breeze is up, you may also hear the lapping of the waves. You definitely hear the waves in the gazebo. If you read the comments on the web page, you will get our guests’ perspective of privacy.

If you are looking for romance, look no further. It is so romantic here that one couple became engaged at the water’s edge!

About Larry or Dawn

I am originally from Indiana. This area is so amazingly beautiful that I moved over 1200 miles away from home to relish its splendor. Larry, on the other hand, is a true "Downeaster." He grew up lobster fishing with his father and has spent many summers working on the trails in the park. He is a treasure trove of information in that regard, as well as "the best-kept secrets" of the area.

He and I are both educators. From the time we received our bachelor degrees, we have spent our entire careers working with and for children. (You could probably guess by our picture that we have one or two years of experience. Just how many, though, remains our secret.) In 1997 my career was cut short by an aggressive form of Multiple Sclerosis. The progression was very fast in the beginning, and my first wheelchair was prescribed before the first year was over. MS is a chronic illness and that's why we rarely go to the shore anymore. But if you have to have an illness, I can't think of a more beautiful place to do it! You are more than welcome to come share it with us. We are grateful to have had the pleasure of meeting many wonderful and amazing people over the years.

Larry or Dawn purchased this house in 2001

We loved it!

  • 5 of 5

It has been a bit since we stayed with Dawn and Larry, but we really want to finally get our thanks to them on record! First, what a great pleasure meeting and talking with our hosts. Fabulous people, warm, open, hospitable, knowledgeable and engaging. Great accommodations with every amenity you could wish for...and super views. The sunset walks on the beach were fantastic. We loved it here, and we are embarrassed to announce that in four days, we cooked (and ate) over 10 lobsters. Acadia Park, with its great beauty and hikes, WOW! Our special favourite was the the hike up Acadia Trail. It was lots of fun scrambling through the rocks and the views of Some Harbour were so impressive. But all of the hikes were great, Great Head, Gotham Mountain, Wonderland, Ships Harbor.... We only wish we had more time to explore, but we were glad we did make it to Winter Harbour and Corea. What a beautiful part of the country. Thank you Dawn and Larry for making us feel so welcome. Best wishes for the two of you.

Peaceful Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Dawn and Larry's rental was pure relaxation. Our family of four (including 2 kids: 5 & 7) thoroughly enjoyed our time at this property. It was a welcome getaway from very beautiful, but very popular, Acadia National Park which we visited every single day. Their location was the perfect launching off point to explore everything Mt. Desert, Acadia, and the DownEast region in general, has to offer (which you can't possibly fit in one week so we'll just have to come back to do more!). It's a basement apartment, but with it's own private entrance and full access to their gorgeous property, which includes a beach. During our stay, we never saw anyone else on the beach, which meant, just more sea glass and shells for us! Larry and Dawn were super accommodating and definitely went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable. I highly recommend staying at this property for anyone looking to explore the Acadia or DownEast region. It allows the perfect balance between action and peacefulness.

Very convenient and awesome place

  • 5 of 5

The stay was very comfortable and had all the amenities we looked for. The price was also very nominal for the facility that was provided. The best part was it was situated pretty close to bar harbor and all the places in Acadia national park that we were able to reach within minutes.

The beach is right behind the house and the sunset everyday made the day during the stay. I would definitely recommend anyone to stay @ this place.

Perfect week away with my husband

  • 5 of 5

We were close to the park where we did a lot of hiking. So coming back to such a peaceful place to end our day was the best. Larry and Dawn were perfect hosts. And we can't forget to mention feeding the chipmunks.

We so enjoyed our stay at Dawn and Larry's home. The views are breathtaking. We visited several of the tourist attractions nearby, but our favorite days were the ones we spent relaxing one the beach. Our 8 year old daughter spent hours exploring the beach. One of our best family vacations.

nice location, apartment needs updating.

  • 2 of 5

The location is on the water surrounded by woods. Nice peaceful getaway location. The apartment is in the basement of the home with your own door to the outside. It's a basic setup and like most basements, it can smell damp and quite musty, which was the case here. We aired the place out the whole week and kept windows open. Luckily the weather was cool enough for that. We also had some spider bites after a couple sleeps. I'm a tall and broad shouldered guy and the shower was too small but it got the job done. The hosts are very nice and I believe they would help you out in any way they could. However I knew right away that I would have paid more to stay somewhere nicer and fresher smelling.

Owner's Response: We were both very sad when we read this review. No one has ever mentioned bad smells or bugs in the over 10 years we have shared our home with family and more than 200 guests. We wish Jud had talked to us about the mustiness. Along with the baseboard heating system used all winter and spring, we installed a Fujitsu heat pump in the apartment two years ago and could have told him how to adjust the settings to remove excess moisture. After receiving Jud’s comment, we also purchased a dehumidifier since we had an extremely wet and foggy spring this year. In the previous 24, five-star reviews, numerous guests referred to the apartment as “spotless” and “very clean.” It is quite likely that the bites Jud and his wife mentioned were from black flies. I say this because the reviewer who stayed the week before Jud gave us a 4 star rating due to “the mosquitoes and flies that were abundant in the evenings this spring.” Black flies are notorious in the northern New England states. They have a short season of about 4 weeks from mid-May to mid-June. If you haven’t had previous exposure to them, their bites can leave a welt much larger than mosquitoes’ and extremely itchy. They were a very unpleasant surprise for me after moving here from Indiana where, like many places in the mid-west, there are no black flies. We suggest you look them up on the internet if you are planning to visit anywhere in Maine that early in the season. Many articles say using insect repellents containing DEET will keep them at bay. To make certain there were no spiders or places with musty smells, Larry washed all the walls, closets, trim and floors again. We also laundered the rugs, futon cover and extra bedding. It is very important to us that our guests have a wonderful vacation. Jud and his wife are a lovely young couple and we wish them nothing but the best.
