We had a brilliant time at The Byre, Boghead Farm. It was everything advertised and more, peace and quiet and extremely beautiful surroundings.
The hosts Thomas & Fiona went above and beyond to accommodate my disabled mother.
We will definitely be going back and would definitely recommend it.

Our hosts were very welcoming, answering and questions and giving us a farm tour. The house itself was lovely, even better than the photos and with a fully decorated Christmas tree (we stayed over new year). We made good use of the fireplace and dad very cosy nights in. Would recommend to everyone!

Thank you for your kind review, I am glad you enjoyed your stay. The woodburner is just right for cosy nights in during the darker nights of the Scottish winter.

This is a modern, well-equipped barn renovation. Each bedroom has its own ensuite, which made it easy for our group of 4. The owner is on site, as this is a working farm. We enjoyed seeing him working the sheep with his dogs. He was quick to share information about his farming and about the attractions in the area. It is a rural location, which is what we wanted. There are grocery stores, a CO-OP and an ASDA not too far away (11 miles?) so we could get anything we needed, but we enjoyed being in farming country. The largest bedroom has a super king bed, and a wet room that is equipped for disabled. The owners have taken care that it is designed to be accessible (although we did not require that feature). We would definitely recommend this property, and would come again if we return to the area.

Thank you for your kind review, I am pleased you enjoyed watching the sheep dogs at work, just one of the benefits of being on a working farm.
A gorgeous holiday cottage with fabulous interior design and offering everything you could possibly need. Spotlessly clean and perfectly presented for our arrival. The location is in stunning countryside but offers an easy commute to nearby villages and towns to eat out and buy essentials. A perfect base to explore Aberdeenshire and Moray.
Thank you to our hosts Fiona and Thomas for our stay and making us so welcome.
Fantastic place. The cottage is in a beautiful location, very quiet with astonishing views.Fully equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay. The host took his time to meet us at check it and gave us all the information we needed.Because we landed there over the festive period we were lucky to find a gorgeous real Christmas tree and a basket full of goodies 😋I would highly recommend this place.Would definitely go back.

Beautiful location - but a disappointing ending
We were very happy during our week at the property. The location is stunning. As a wheelchair user, the accessibility was good, although some of the furniture and narrowness of the hallways made it hard to navigate. I was very disappointed that I incurred an additional charge of £20 (after departure) for an alleged mark on the wall, which can only have been caused by my wheelchair. If the owners had given me the opportunity to clean this to their satisfaction rather than applying a penalty after we had departed, I would have happily done so. Disability is full of hidden costs!

I am pleased you enjoyed your stay but am puzzled by your remark about the hallways being narrow as they are 103cm wide at their narrowest, we had a full accessability statement available when you booked so you could ensure the cottage was suitable for your needs, this is currently being updated and will be back on the booking site soon.
Regarding the Trainer footprint on the wall, which was more likely to have been created by one of the young adults in your party than a wheelchair, as it was 45cms up the wall, you could have cleaned it off the wall before you left as you could not miss it on the wall by the door.
Accidents do happen, which is why we did not charge for the mug that was broken (although you forgot to mention that when you left) but a trainer footprint on the wall is not in our estimation an accident

Beautiful property.
By the end of our stay, I initially decided against writing a review despite unpleasant interactions with the host, Thomas. The property itself was spotless, well-fitted, and had a Christmas tree for our festive getaway—a thoughtful touch we appreciated. Leaving a review that would effect the property's rating seemed a shame. However, during check-out, Thomas doubled down on his unpleasant behaviour and I felt compelled to make our experience known.Upon arrival, he made disparaging comments about previous guests, which felt odd and very unprofessional. I brushed it off, but the following morning, he banged aggressively on the door at 9 AM, berating us for bringing a cat. Although we had selected “4 adults, 1 pet” during booking, he claimed cats didn’t count as pets. I apologised for overlooking the dog-only policy and offered to resolve any issues, but he threatened legal action for damage which had not, and never arose to occur. At check-out, he berated us again for not rearranging furniture, despite previously saying we could arrange it however we liked. After returning home, I found a 100 charge for a key which we accidentally had in a pocket, a punitive amount considering we could return it easily. Thomas’ attitude left us feeling unwelcome and inconvenient. I'm in disbelief that a host could speak to a guest the way we were spoken to while being nothing but appeasing. I cannot recommend staying here and hope never to encounter another host like Thomas.

Firstly, I am sorry you felt you had been unfairly treated by us stopping your Damage Deposit. When you left the property and we started to clean, we noticed the key for the patio doors was missing, we conducted a search but were unable to locate it. I emailed asking if you had left it somewhere in the cottage, having received no reply by early evening I stopped the £100 damage deposit as if the key was not found we would have to change the locks as we cannot have a set of keys unaccounted for which could be used to access the property. A couple of hours after I had done this, we were contacted by VRBO saying you considered this amount was excessive as you could return the keys.
My "disparaging comments" re previous guests presumably refers to my advice not to turn up the underfloor heating over the temperature you would require it at, when I said a previous guest had done this (no names mentioned) and then found it would not instantly cool down. Sorry if you found this so, I thought it helpful advice.
Regarding my knocking on the door at 9am, I first knocked gently as I was aware that you were in but was not heard so knocked harder. Although you had booked for a pet the information states quite clearly “dogs are accepted by prior arrangement”, it also has a box for cats which is not marked, to make this very clear I have now added "sorry we do not take cats”.
I advised you I was unhappy with you bringing a cat and warned any damage caused by the cat would have to be paid for, not an unreasonable request, I think.
An appeasing guest wouldn’t have left cat litter all over the bedroom floor, used the biscuit barrel as a vase for flowers, or left without doing their dishes.
I have returned half your damage deposit now the key has been returned; the rest will help cover the extra 3.5 hrs we spent cleaning.
Sehr schönes ländlich gelegenes cottage. Freundliche Gastgeber und tierische Nachbarn. Viele Sehenswürdigkeiten von dem Standpunkt aus gut anzufafahren
Absolutely picture perfect! Most comfortable beds we had in a month in Scotland & the entire place looks better than in the photos online.
The accessibility aspect was perfect for my mum who uses a walker. I appreciated that they recycle and compost- first time I saw compost in the UK. Amazing stay, can’t recommend it enough.
The host was very friendly and gave us lots of helpful information when we arrived.
The property was clean and bright and was a lot bigger than we expected. The bedrooms all had en-suite toilet and shower all good quality.
The scenery all round was fantastic.
We enjoyed our stay.
The cottage was lovely and clean and decorated in a modern and stylish way so you felt right at home. The owners were lovely and helpful if we needed anything. Would highly recommend staying there and would come again.
I stayed at this property with my elderly parents and one of their friends. Two members of our party had mobility issues so the property was perfect for them. There were no steps to negotiate and the seat in one of the showers was a great addition.
The view from the lounge window was wonderful across the farmland and hills beyond. We enjoyed observing the sheepdogs working bringing the flocks down for shearing and watching the daily work going on around the farm. The roads around the property were quiet with only farm vehicles and the postman so ideal for walking our own dogs.
The property was extremely clean and well equipped. The little basket of arrival goodies very much appreciated. Thomas and Fiona were great hosts. Very friendly and welcoming.
Although Lumsden itself is a little bit tired the property is within easy reach of Alford for groceries and an easy drive to Aberdeen, or north to the county of Moray which offers an array of beautiful places to visit.
I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this property and hope to return sometime soon. We
Lovely cottage and good overall access for wheelchair users. Only niggles were that the disabled bathroom sink was too small and difficult to use from a wheelchair and impossible to shave in. The bathroom door could do with a horizontal grab rail to pull it shut. Hard flooring throughout made wheelchair use easy.
This was a fantastic family stay away. The accommodation was perfect, spotlessly clean, beautifully decorated, amazingly comfortable beds and a comprehensively equipped kitchen!
Thomas was friendly and welcoming and all of questions before we arrived and while we were there were answered promptly. We couldn't have asked for better hosts. The gifts on arrival were the icing on the cake.
We had to travel a little way to the main tourist attractions on the other side of the Cairngorms but the views along the journey were awesome and the quality of the property was so much better than anything else we saw so totally worth it.
Highly recommended.
Superb property ideal for wheelchair user- flat throughout with a wet room (I’m a T6 complete). Great hosts, lovely to see and cuddle young lambs on the farm. Sights all spread out so always a drive to somewhere, but great place to return to with a dram of whisky!
Stunning conversion with all the mid cons you could want. Rural location but amenities all available by a short car journey. Explored the many attractions in the surrounding area during the day and enjoyed the cottage in the evening. Would love to visit again and thoroughly recommend as a base to explore the region.
Warm, spotlessly clean property
Welcoming hosts
Fish and Chips from the Van in the village on Saturday night

And the underfloor heating and showers get a special mention from the kids!!

About the host
Hosted by Thomas and Fiona Jackson
Boghead is home to Thomas and Fiona and Ewan as well as 4 dogs Red the working collie and Glen who is Red's apprentice, Storm and Rum who are both Working Cocker Spaniels and Harvey the ginger cat. Thomas is from generations of Farmers and Fiona works for the NHS. She also runs her own business on the farm as a qualified Reflexologist offering Foot and Hand Treatments. Ewan is a qualified personal trainer and helps out on the farm. We moved to Boghead from Gloucestershire in 2012 bringing our farm animals and equipment with us, the first winter some of the animals lived in what is now the holiday cottage. We run Aberdeen Angus Beef cattle (the local breed) and Vendeen sheep on this small traditionally run farm. In 2013 we started the process of converting the run down steading into two holiday cottages with the first being completed in August 2016 and this one opening in June 2019
Why they chose this property
The restoration and conversion of the steading to 2 cottages gives visitors the chance to enjoy this lovely rural area which we are lucky enough to enjoy as both our home and business.
What makes this property unique
Who could not be enchanted by the peace and quiet and stunning scenery which is forever changing depending on the seasons and the light.
