About this property

Beautiful Cottage Home! Short walk to Coastal Path, Budleigh Salterton & beach.

Presenting a rare opportunity to rent in the highly sought after thatched village of Otterton, The Shippen is the mid-terrace of an award-winning converted barn complex situated in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

We ask all guests to read the rules carefully before booking. Please note there are 2 deposits - a damage deposit paid via VRBO, and a bedding and towel deposit paid directly to the owner 7 days prior to occupancy. The latter is detailed in house rules.

Our home is located in an idyllic courtyard consisting of 12 properties and boasts stunning views of the Otter Valley and the River Otter.

We remodelled in December 2019 to add an additional ensuite and seperate laundry area to our home. Please note, all VRBO reviews posted pertain to rentals prior to these upgrades. For recent reviews please check out our photos of guest entries into our guest book. Additionally we remodelled the other 2 ensuites in February/March 2022. The house comprises of two ground floor double bedrooms, each with en-suites, and a large double bedroom with en-suite on the lower ground floor with views over the garden and river. The beds on the ground floor are custom made by John Ryan.

The living/dining room and kitchen are on the first floor. The first floor is architecturally stunning with wood beams and glass walls allowing full enjoyment of the high-beamed cathedral ceilings, oak floors and period fireplace. The house is furnished with a mix of antiques and custom-made furnishings.

At the back of the house the large landscaped garden slopes gently down to the river. You can watch people ambling along the river path that takes you the 3.5 miles to Budleigh Salterton. The walk is flat and appeals to people of all activity levels. You can also walk out of the house and be on the Coastal Path half a mile away. Some of the path is steep but offers magnificent views.

This beautiful home offers a fabulous holiday base from which to enjoy the many natural and cultural attractions of the area. Otterton is a picturesque thatched village with a fabulous pub serving locally produced food in a warm and welcoming community. There is easy walking access to the Regency beach towns of Sidmouth and Budleigh Salterton, as well as the East-West Devon Coastal Path.

Some local venues worth exploring are Otterton Mill, The Donkey Sanctuary and Pecorama with its gardens, games and trains. Seaton Tramway operates narrow gauge heritage trams between Seaton, Colyford and Colyton in East Devon’s glorious Axe Valley, about 30 minutes away. A short walk from the house along the up-river path takes you to the beautiful Bicton Park Botanical Gardens with its historic palm house, countryside museum and woodland railway. A trip to the caves at the seaside town of Beer and an exploration of Topsham with its little port and village charm, and of course Darts Farm shops and café are a must. Should you wish to venture further afield, the cathedral city of Exeter is only a 30-minute drive away, Dartmoor only 45 minutes and the fossil beaches of Charmouth and Lyme Regis are 40 minutes away. The whole area is well served by public transport. The village community shop is great with a good range of items to choose from. Otterton Mill also sells vegetables as well as the huge choice of bakery items.

There are lots of additional opportunities for child guests who must be over 8 years old. The facilities at Ladram Bay, 1 mile away, are available for use on a daily basis and offer play areas, mini golf and game machines. There is a lovely café at Ladram and the ice-cream is delicious.

Sidmouth is a charming town with incredible views of the Jurassic Coast cliffs and the promenade is a great place to stroll.

A pretty and tranquil spot
We enjoyed a restful stay in the picturesque village of Otterton close to coastal and river walks. The cottage was charming and well equipped, and the beds extremely comfortable. The location was close to beautiful beaches, and livelier locations were within a short driving distance should you chose to seek them out.

The Shippen, Otterton
This is a beautiful cottage in the lovely little village of Otterton. The kitchen was very well equipped and the owners have obviously thought of everything you might need, which left us wanting for nothing. They were also easily contactable. The locals were very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed some beautiful walks along the River Otter and enjoyed some fantastic food in the local pub and further afield. Would definitely recommend Neil’s Fish restaurant in Sidmouth, the Lobster and Sea Bass were particularly good. The freshly baked bread from the Mill was a must! A fantastic week, helped by great weather!

Comfortable family home with good parking
Beautiful extremely well maintained property in a perfect position for exploring the Jurassic coast and Dartmoor. We really felt at home and would highly recommend staying here in the peaceful village of Otterton. Be warned that there is an excellent artisan bakery very close to the house which doesn't help the waistline. The local pub serves good food. We would definitely return for another stay.

Good location in village with community
Well kitted out “upside down” barn conversion. Main bedroom super king size bed was very comfortable. We had some issues at the start which were very quickly remedied by the owner who was unaware. Excellent communications from the owner. Beavers were a great attraction a short walk from the property. The community shop was good, run by volunteers. The Old Mill a short walk away was also worse a visit, excellent cream teas.

A real home from home 🏡
From communications before we even arrived at The Shippen, I had a feeling we were going to have the best time - and I was right! The house is just lovely with every convenience. Amazingly comfy beds & space for all us 6 adults to enjoy the house and garden. The village is pretty & both the mill & community shops stock all essentials; the scones at the mill are delicious! We enjoyed the river walk to/from Budleigh Salterton (& the sweet shop there!). Can highly recommend The Clock House at Chideock- lovely Sunday lunch & very reasonably priced. We were sad to leave but hope we can return another day to continue exploring this beautiful house & location. Thank you Belinda & Ken for sharing your lovely house with us!

Couldn't be faulted.
A wonderfull property that is exceptional in every way.Located in a quiet cup de sac with several other similar properties. The property is fully equipped and is absolute spotless. Probable the best property we have ever stayed in. A credit to the owners and a credit to whoever services it. Village has a coffee shop with freshly baked bread and does a good breakfast, also a very good pub, both within walking distance. I am about to book it again for next year.

Well situated for many Devon attractions. A quietly situated property withl friendly neighbours.
The property was very clean and tidy. It was exactly the country style we were expecting. The local pub provided good meals with a varied menu. Walking was excellent around the local area. The property was well situated for the river walk, and bakery. Walking to Budleigh Salterton was easy and only about two and a half miles along the river. Otters were spotted during our stay. We enjoyed the centrality of the cottage allowing us to visit places within a few miles.

A beautiful barn conversion with large garden and rural outlook.
Absolutely gorgeous place to stay. Beautifully furnished, well-equipped and comfortable. Upside down house to enjoy the views from the first floor. Delightful courtyard setting with otter fountain and river, trees and open fields at the bottom of the garden. Nice welcome and spotlessly clean. We were very happy with the property and the location for a quiet countryside and seaside based holiday with walks on the doorstep and easy access to the lovely villages of East Devon.

Peaceful location, good facilities & parking.
Overall a lovely, character property with a large garden (which needs some TLC) leading down to the river, in a good location for walking, cycling or exploring the South Devon coastline. At the end of my holiday I was disappointed that I didn't receive my security deposit refund within the stated 2 weeks. I contacted the owner when 4 weeks had passed & eventually after several email exchanges, I was refunded after 5 weeks. Once this problem is sorted out I wouldn't hesitate in recommending the property.

Why they chose this property

The unique layout of our home allows for beautiful views. Each bedroom has an ensuite, allowing for greater privacy for our guests. The location is perfect for exploring East Devon. The back garden is beautiful. We have a BBQ but ask that you BBQ away from the back door further down the garden as the neighbour at number 1 doesn't like the smell.
