Charming, Peaceful & Perfectly Equipped

We had a wonderful stay at 1 Apse Castle Cottage — a beautiful, character-filled retreat nestled in peaceful woodland. The cottage is spotless, thoughtfully decorated, and full of charm, with a cozy log burner, luxurious bathroom, and a well-equipped kitchen. Beds were super comfy, and everything felt welcoming and homely. The location is ideal for exploring Shanklin and the wider Isle of Wight. We especially appreciated how dog-friendly it was — our pup loved it! Truly a magical place. We’d happily return and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing break.

Lovely 16th century cottage, very well presented and clean, easy key collection and instant booking

The location is about a mile walk (3 minutes in a car) from the lovely village of Shanklin. The cottage was very well presented, décor was lovely and had all the facilities anyone can need. We stayed with our 2 lovely small dogs, the outside was perfect for them as the garden was fenced in. The location was perfect, woods across the road, the cottage sits on a quiet road, I didn't hear any traffic once inside. The whole cottage was very clean, and had a lovely downstairs bathroom. The beds were very comfortable, I only wish I was still there!

Lovely peaceful stay

We had a lovely week staying at the cute cottage just outside Shanklin. It was nicely furnished and comfortable for us as a couple and a small dog. The cottage had everything we needed for the week and provided a great base for us to explore the island. It is in a lovely quiet location, and a short drive into the town (we didn't try walking due to lack of pavements on the roads). The week we stayed was very warm so the upstairs got a little hot but the fan provided gave us some air.

Lovely traditional cottage

Nice and quiet cottage lovely bedroom with good beds. Well equipped kitchen. - It's difficult to go for a walk directly from the cottage the road in front of the cottage is dangerous (especially with a dog) and the nearest footpath is at a few hundred yards from the cottage. - We did nog manage to get enough hot water for using the bath.

Lovely cottage

The cottage was lovely and had everything we needed (but a tea pot would be a welcome addition). It was a perfect spot for exploring the island. We travelled with our dog and the outside space was well fenced to keep her safe. Unfortunately the lane seemed to be a cut through for busy traffic travelling at speed which meant walking her straight from the doorstep was often quite unsafe. Fortunately the cottage is not far from other spots to park up and dog walk. We had a super stay - helped by the incredibly hot September weather! Wouldn’t hesitate to book through the Island Holiday company again.

Great location if you want somewhere quiet away from the crowds. That said it is within a short drive of Ventnor, Shanklin, Godshill and Sandown. The outside space of the cottage is limited to a courtyard at the side of the property. If you have a big car you might find the driveway a little on the short side - that said we did manage to fit two cars side by side ( a Niro and a Panda). We did have to move the rubbish bins off the drive to do that! If you need to rely on the internet while you’re away this probably isn’t the right location for you.

A rustic retreat.

The location was pleasantly rural, but conveniently very close to roads which connected to everywhere on the island. The cottage itself was pretty and quaint and there were nice decorative touches to make it feel homely inside. The kitchen was well equipped the bathrooms were furnished with good quality suites and were very clean. The bedrooms were good with rustic features. Communication before the holiday was efficient and helpful. Outside, the fence could be moved to create more space for 2 cars. Outside space could be improved generally, and a great deal of water was constantly flowing across the yard which was not mentioned in the details. Blinds instead of curtains in the lounge: when we arrived, one curtain was held up by clothes pegs! Plus a blind would be appreciated in the downstairs bathroom. Hooks on back of bathroom doors would be useful.

1 Apse Cottage

1 Apse Cottage is a charming semi-detached cottage in a shady position with a small outdoor area and small parking space. There is some nice decor, it has cottage character, the kitchen has been really well thought out and is well designed and equipped. However, there are a few minor complaints unfortunately the shower head over the bath isn't working. The shower in the shower room also doesn't work using the main shower head/drencher, only works through the hose shower head, which is fine! but when you are paying for a holiday you expect it to work. We also could not connect to the Wifi for the duration of our stay. The beds were comfortable and the linen fresh but the cottage could of been cleaner, especially the outside space. Luckily the sun was shining and we had a wonderful stay exploring the Isle of Wight.

We are very sorry that your holiday did not live up to it's expectations. Unfortunately we were unaware of the issues that you have arisen regarding the showers and the cleanliness of the property, if we had of been notified when speaking with yourselves we would of sent in our handyman and cleaners to rectify. Regarding the Wi-Fi in which we were made aware of we sent someone the next day to take a look at it for you and have it fixed, unfortunately we had assumed that the issue had been resolved as we had not heard any communication regarding the issue. We are glad you enjoyed your stay on the Isle of Wight and we can improve on these, we hope you consider booking through us again in the future.

Unfortunately of poor standard and not value for money

Internal and external cleanliness were the main factors for our poor review. Very overgrown front garden and dirty patio area. On the surface the house seemed clean inside but it is clear there have been no high level or deep cleans carried out for some time. We went around catching all the spiders before we slept the first night. The cottage has a very damp feel and musty smell, we did not place our clothes in the wardrobes because of this but lived out of our suitcases for our full week booking. The property is too small for 5 people, there were 4 of us and it was a tad too snug. The price commanded for one week in this property due to the above concerns was therefore not value for money. The parking was extremely tight for two medium or above sized vehicles and the lane is not practical to park in. It is unfortunate that our review has marked this property down but we have stayed away often and therefore have comparisons regarding value for money, tidiness and cleanliness and this property could certainly improve with more TLC and attention to detail.

We were not informed of any issues that arose during your stay, so we weren’t able to address these for you. We have attended the property to investigate the smell you had reported since your review, we believe this is due to previous occupants not airing the property during their stay. Our housekeeping teams are reporting that since the weather has changed, there is an increase in spider activity across all of our properties. They do check for webs and spiders to remove these; however, they can re-appear quite quickly, a constant battle with nature at this time of year. We always aim to respond very quickly to any issues that arise during guest stays. All of our properties contain information in our brochures with our contact details as it is so important to our owners to maintain good reviews on their properties. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to respond as we weren’t informed during your stay. We would of been very grateful to of had the opportunity to address these points for you to ensure you had a lovely stay with us. We hope to see you again on your next visit to the Isle of Wight. Lovely healing break

My family and I loved our stay at Apse Castle Cottage. The cottage was clean, comfortable and came with clear instructions. Having a space to park was great. On the day we left I somehow managed to leave a bag at the cottage and Heather the lovely person who came to check and clean the cottage rang me straight away and gave clear instructions so I was able to get it back easily. We had a lovely chat when I picked it up.

Comfy and cool in the heatwave

The cottage was cosy and cool in the heatwave and had most of the facilities you could want. WiFi was available but not particularly strong and phone signal was very weak. A good size for our group of 5 which included one child.

Cosy cottage

The cottage itself is lovely and cosy, lovely kitchen and I myself loved the cooker, however personally we found it a bit cramped for 4 adults, 1 child and two medium size dogs. There was really no garden just a small yard. We had some issues with the shower overflowing due to a blockage in the drain, a smell in the bathroom down stairs presumably from blockages of the drain. We also find the parking for two large cars impossible. To sum it all up we did have a nice time, cottage quite convenient to Shanklin, Sandown and shops. And would suit a couple more than a family.

Gorgeous comfortable cottage

Lovely cottage with a very homely feel. Plenty of space for us 4 adults and 1 toddler. Very close to Shanklin shops and restaurant’s , although only downside is you can’t really walk it. Owner very helpful if you had any issues.

A nice place outside shanklin

Good place and well situated outside Shanklin. Space only really for one larger car and no garden, but the house is very nice. A little dark but quiet, peaceful, and well maintained. Beds rather soft but otherwise lovely.
