There are many pleasant inns, teashops, guest houses and gift shops in the village, as well as the Beatrix Potter Gallery, which houses an annually changing exhibition of the famous author’s illustrations and stories. The other famous Hawkshead enthusiast, William Wordsworth, attended the Old Grammar School in 1779-87, which still stands today, and you can visit the building where the Lakeland poet developed his love of the form, and even see the desk into which he scratched his name as a small boy! Newby Bridge is ten miles away and offers attractions such as the Aquarium of the Lakes and Windermere Lake Cruises, sailing daily between Ambleside, Bowness and Lakeside. With stunning scenery and numerous attractions within easy touring distance, Hawkshead is in an ideal location at any time of the year.

Messaged the owner three times requesting the super kingsize bed to be made into twin beds. Received no repsonse and this was not done. There was already people in the property when we arrived who had got their dates wrong. The property itself once we had access and made up our beds and the cleaner came the next day was fine. It was in a beautiful setting.

The property was a bit difficult to find. But once there, the grounds were spectacular with lots of rabbits frolicking on the grass. The writer's cottage had no assigned outdoor space of its own. It was impossible to cool the accommodation because the windows wouldn't open. I tried to turn off all radiators but the one in the front powder room remained on for the whole visit. It was unclear that one bedroom was below level down uneven stairs. Its ensuite bathroom was quite small and the heated towel rack was so hot it would burn you if touched. I had to drape towels over it when exiting the shower as it was immediately in front of the shower door. Much as I tried, I couldn't turn it off either. There was a specific coffee maker but no coffee for the machine. For a short stay, it is not worth buying a whole box of coffee pods that can't be used with any other machine. The living room was lovely and spacious but again, it was hot. Windows couldn't be opened. The coin laundry was much appreciated but one wash through and the washing machine door would not open. The red door closed light remained illuminated long after the wash was done. One more run through for another pound proved the trick. This time the door lock turned off so clothes could be moved to a dryer. Having said all this, I would recommend this accomodation for a quiet and restful holiday. Beds were comfortable and there was no noise except for birds and breezes. Heaven.
