Town: Located in North Yorkshire's Scarborough region, the coastal town and port of Whitby is near the mouth of the River Esk. This area is a great jumping off point for excursions around this scenic region of Yorkshire, and there are many things to do in the vicinity to ensure you make the most of your time in the countryside and along the coast. Blue Flag beaches and the North York Moors are only two of the many attractions in this area. Whitby's beautiful ambience is just one of its many appealing features; the town's winding alleyways and hidden alleys are home to several restaurants and stores. Visit the scenic harbour and lighthouse to take in a sunset, or go whale watching or on a coastal cruise to get up close and personal with marine life. Visit the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, which features a historical and ethnographic exhibition on Cook himself, or hike the 199 stairs up to Whitby Abbey.
