The region
Wheddon Cross is just over a mile from Hedgehog Cottage, it's a village in the parish of Cutcombe on Exmoor, based around the crossroads; the roads run from north to south between Minehead and Dulverton, and east to west between Taunton and North Devon. The village is argued to be the highest on Exmoor, standing at 980 feet above sea level, and the highest point on Exmoor, Dunkery Beacon (1704 feet above sea level) is the focal point of the village. Dunkery Beacon is about three miles from the village, there are fantastic panoramic views from Dunkery; wild moorland to the west, the Bristol Channel and Wales to the north, the rolling Brendon Hills to the east and the Quarme Valley to the south.

In recent years the village has become well-known for the abundance of snowdrops in the nearby valley which has become known as 'Snowdrop Valley'. The snowdrops bloom around February and a park and ride system operates from the village to enable visitors easy access to the "carpet of snowdrops".

Wheddon Cross is surrounded by beautiful countryside; open moorland, wooded valleys and farmland. An abundance of wildlife can often be seen, including Exmoor ponies and red deer. There are a number of great walks along marked footpaths and bridleways, including the famous Coleridge Way which passes through..

Wheddon Cross is a thriving community and offers many local services for a small village. The village shop is a well-stocked mini-supermarket incorporating a Post Office counter, petrol pumps, cash point machine and has good opening hours. The Rest & Be Thankful Inn is the village pub which serves food and is child and dog friendly. The village also has a first school, church, playing field, public conveniences, and a bus service.

Minehead is the nearest town, approximately 9 miles away. Here you will find the larger supermarkets and petrol stations (Tesco and Morrison's are both situated on the outskirts of the town), high street banks with cash machines, plus a range of other shops throughout the town.

Summer 24'

Lovely property set in idyllic countryside. It was a great base to visit Dunster, Minehead, Lynton and Lynmouth, Tarr Steps, Watersmeet and go walking on Exmoor. It really was a great 5 days away.

Hedgehog Cottage was lovely. It was spotlessly clean with modern fittings and we felt very safe in these uncertain virus times. The cottage is in a good rural location for exploring Exmoor. It was also nice to meet the owner who was cutting the grass when we arrived. Our dog enjoyed his holiday too!

The location is fab if you want to be "in the sticks" away from it all! And although there are other cottages on site, it was very private and quiet and we were unaware of anyone else. Fran was extremely conscientious to ensure everything was as good as it could be. Such a special place, truly. Loved it!

The cottage was very cosy, had everything we required and was immaculately clean. The garden was very safe for our dog. The location is ideal for exploring Exmoor nowhere seems very far away. Our dog enjoyed running around Dunster beach, where there are no restrictions for dogs, and at low tide there are huge expanses of hard sand. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Cosy country cottage in a quiet position but only 3 minutes by car from a well stocked village store. Central heating a real bonus. Well equipped even though somethings were removed for Covid. Ideal for our dog who enjoyed walks in the woodland behind the cottage.

Half term haven

Hedgehog cottage was a home away from home, clean, cosy, warm, light, well appointed and welcoming. Lovely wood burner, plenty of hot water and wonderful fluffy towels, perfect when the weather was unfortunately rather wet! A thoughtful welcome pack included fresh local eggs, milk and even ground coffee and hot chocolate, simply perfect. Thank you for making our half term week in Exmoor unforgettable.
