About Capt. Dave Gugliotti
Captain Dave and his First Mate Danielle would like to welcome you aboard “Southern Comfort”. About the owners: Capt. Dave has been boating for over 25 years, holds a USCG 200 ton Masters license and also owns the Charter boat “Hatterass” directly in front of “Southern Comfort” as well as " Ship of Fools" just around the corner. We encourage you to book a charter with us and experience Charleston in a way that few visitors get the opportunity to. We Married in May of 2000 and left Connecticut in 2013, moving to Charleston. We wanted to pursue our love of boating and be on the water all year round. We started Carolina Marine Group in 2013 providing harbor tours. We have been building the business and the brand ever since. Our mission is to provide the best on the water experience in the greatest city in the US. We took ownership of “Southern Comfort” in 2017 to expand our operation and to provide our water loving guests a unique way of spending their time in Charleston. We hope your stay with us is a memorable one and you fall in love with this great city as much as we have. Enjoy your stay and if there is anything we can do to make it more enjoyable don’t hesitate to ask.

4 Ladies experiencing the yacht.
Capt Dave was great. Ship still has some issues that he is working on. Large king room is great. But other beds are buck size. We had running motors at night due to a faulty pump. Upon arrival several cleaning issues had to be addressed but Capt Dave came and took care of. We also booked a 3 hr boat tour thru Capt Dave that was wonderful.
Great way to visit Charleston
The yacht is an excellent place to stay. The marina is easy access to the city. The bike rental program is easy and even using an Uber is cheap.
Great views and we watched fireworks for New Years from the top deck. Watched 5 different programs along the waterfront. Couldn’t see the harbor problem of fireworks but it was fun
Overall great experience
Unique & Fun Experience!
First off, I want to say that my girlfriends and I had a great time staying on Captain Dave’s yacht! It was only about a mile away from all of the sites, and it was a really unique experience. We vacation every year and thought it would be fun to do something other than a hotel or house. It did not disappoint - really fun experience! And anytime we had any questions or needed anything, Dave took care of us immediately. One of the most responsive landlords I’ve ever had with a VRBO!
I do want to point out though that if you are looking for a TRUE LUXURY experience, this may not be what you are looking for.
IT’S OLD: It was built in the 80s and not much has been updated since. Dave told me he’s been working on it when he can, but it has a long way to go. Just some things to consider… Peeling wallpaper, stained and frayed carpet, cabinets and drawers that don’t open properly, fixtures in main bath are pretty old and corroded, washer/dryer is disconnected, musty smell (you are in a marina, after all! LOL), grates not attached. We laughed it all off, but if you are used to 4-5 star hotels, this isn’t it.
THERMOSTAT: Staying there in December, we were constantly thinking it was either too hot or too cold. We had Dave come over to change the temperature for us more than once - you cannot easily control it yourself or at all in some areas of the yacht.
CLEANLINESS: Dave did tell me that the cleaning lady was swamped so hopefully this was just an oversight but some bedrooms were missing pillowcases, the remote control in one of the bedrooms had an inch of dust, the inside of the kitchen cabinets could use a good sorting through and cleaning, and the track in the main bath shower had a lot of black gook- Probably just from age rather than mildew. If you are a clean freak, you may not be happy.
THINGS WE LIKED: The beds were super comfy. The marina was quiet and peaceful and safe. Plenty of hot water every morning and never had a plumbing issue. We also had fun climbing ladder to top deck to watch the stars. And it was far more spacious than I anticipated!
My husband and I spent the Thanksgiving holiday on the Southern Comfort and loved the experience! The location is excellent and very easy to get to. Dave, the owner was a super nice guy, very helpful and easy to deal with. Really enjoyed seeing all the huge yachts on the Megadock! Incredible! We throughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend for a really cool and different experience!
