Sunset on the Bay is a 3-bedroom vacation rental on Nelson Lake only minutes from Hayward, Wisconsin. With a beautiful westerly lake view of one of the Hayward, Wisconsin Area's most popular lakes, this comfortable vacation home lives up to its name!

A terraced landscaping and wooded setting welcomes you upon arrival. The single-story home sits naturally at the top of a gentle hill tucked into a quiet bay overlooking Nelson Lake. The layout of the home with all its modern amenities allows plenty of opportunities to soak up this Northwood's view while staying connected with the outside world (or not). The grassy lakeside yard has a campfire ring with a natural scenic vista of a largely undeveloped shoreline. There is also a deck, screened in porch and private dock from which to take in the picturesque Northwood's lake scene, too.

Inside you'll find a comfortable 3 bedroom, 2 bath vacation home with an open living room, kitchen and dining area. The sliding patio doors in the living room frame the lake view as well as open onto the lakeside deck. There is a wood burning stove to keep you cozy as well as Satellite TV, DVD player and DSL Internet to keep you connected.

The kitchen with all the essentials has an electric stove, oven, full size refrigerator/freezer, drip coffeemaker, toaster and microwave. There is a dining room table and kitchen island with stools offering plenty of counter space for meal preparation and enjoyment.

There is a carpeted bedroom off the living room with a log framed full bed. A second bedroom also has a full-sized bed while the third bedroom enjoys a beautiful view of the lake with a queen-sized bed and full bath. All three of the bedrooms have ceiling fans and there is a sofa sleeper futon in the living room.



Nelson Lake is 2,500 acres in size with a maximum depth of 33 feet, 31 miles of shoreline and 16 islands. Long a favorite of Hayward, Wisconsin fishermen, Nelson Lake has 4 public landings and is a destination for year-round water enthusiasts looking to fish, kayak, canoe or pontoon a beautiful Northern Wisconsin lake.


*We have been working with the Department of Health and have new cleaning standards and procedures for all our Beds. On each bed we will provide sheets, pillow and pillowcase and blankets. You will need to bring your own towels and any soaps.

Lovely Stay

The cabin was clean and spacious. The location was great! We took a couple of day trips to the South shore of Lake Superior. Nelson Lake was fun to explore. The cabin is aptly named, we had numerous amazing sunsets. 4 stars on cleanliness as it would have been nice if the deck was swept off since we spent a lot of time out there.

cabin rental

All the rooms were very nice! the kitchen could use some better cookware. One frying pan needed to be thrown away. So maybe bring your own if you like to cook. There was a thick layer of dust/dirt an inch thick on the ceiling fan in living room, the bedroom too,. So we could not use it, and a few other things that needed attention. Other than that it was just perfect for a winter stay! I would stay again.

Great locationUnhappy with inaccurate listing as listing says there is a Washer/Dryer. True there is, but the dryer is broke with a note that says do not use, belt broke. Listing also states dishwasher, which there isn’t. Ceiling Fans in Master Bedroom and 3 season porch do not work. An abundance of nails and screws in backyard towards firepit; we all had to make we had shoes on when outside

Beautiful Spot on Nelson Lake

My husband, daughter and I spent a week here to escape the crazy world. The cabin is located in a beautiful sheltered bay on Nelson Lake. The view of the lake was gorgeous and the house is appropriately named Sunset on the Bay. Everything inside was clean and well maintained. Lots of space and the master bedroom with an en-suite offered great views of the water. The kitchen was nicely stocked with utensils, pots and pans. We caught plenty of panfish, my daughter landed a nice sized large mouth bass and my husband hooked 2 northern, but they got away. We loved watching the eagles flying overhead. We hope to come back soon.

Summer Fun

Our family enjoyed the fishing on Nelson Lake and caught enough fish to have a fish fry on our last night. The cabin was clean and we appreciated the side porch to keep our chairs, floaties, etc. There was plenty of room for trailers and parking, which was great! Kari from the property management was outstanding! The only complaint was that the week went by too fast!

Overall, I do not recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: Good location and pretty setting. Unfortunately this does not make up for the poor upkeep. Several screens are ducted taped to the window or missing completely. When windows with screens were open, cabin filled with bugs at night. Ceiling fan in primary bedroom did not work. Without AC pretty miserable. Host delivered 2 fans and towels. (first time we stayed at VRBO w/out towels). Deck is bowed creating a tripping hazard. Primary mattress needs to be replaced. Great potential, but would not stay here until maintenance issues were addressed.

In prior review there was comment on screen door and it still wasn't fixed. I wish they would have better silver ware such as knifes. These items didn't hurt our experience but upkeep could be a little better.

Fabulous Vacation

It’s a great location, just far enough away from Hayward that you feel like you’re away, but close enough that you can still access services with driving too far. The fishing was good, lots of pan fish (blue Gill and crappie) and large mouth bass. This section of Nelson Lake is away from the resorts, so it’s very peaceful. The interior of the house was clean and well maintained. The kitchen was well stocked with dishes, utensils, pots and pans. A few cooler nights we used the baseboard heaters and it was nice and cozy for sleeping. There were some small items on the exterior (patio door handle, plastic on screened porch windows, etc.) that should have been taken care of, but nothing major. Overall a great spot for a week Up North.

Cozy cabin

Beautiful spot. I would recommend bringing own seasoning for cooking. The dryer did not dry clothes. It was a great place to be with family .

Fun stay but Do not rent a boat from property management

Overall my family has enjoyed this area for a few years. We did decide to rent a boat that would be ready for us to use on the premises to make it more convenient when we arrived Unfortunately the boat was not up-to-date and needed an old-fashioned gas mixture that took up much of our family time to mix and Constantly refilling if the tank . This has truly left a bad taste in our mouth and we probably will not be back.

Maintenance issues

Interior very clean with the exception of the bathroom sinks which were very slow to drain. Windows of the house and screens looked like they had not been cleaned in quite some time. I spent a couple of hours vacuuming screens trying to get the accumulated dust off. Couple of screens missing and many of them in need of repair. Gutters over porch area were filled with leaves and needles from evergreens making a mess when it rained.

Basic up north cabin

Overall the cabin was okay. Kitchen had plenty pots/pans etc. Need some attention to the patio door/screen as we couldn’t open it (which would have helped get fresh air). The three bedrooms were good size but the master bedroom mattress was difficult to sleep on. Nice size deck however general condition of deck area needs attention to utilize it. Nice size dock to accommodate our boat (but could not swim off dock) Good parking and space for boat trailer on property

Winter get-away

My wife & I hosted our 2 adult daughters & hubbies for a fun winter weekend at Sunset on the Bay Cabin to celebrate my wife’s birthday. Despite very cold outside temps (low we experienced was -30F) we bundled up & skied some of the Birkie Trail & snowshoed a bit of the CAMBA trails nearby. Well equipped kitchen, good heating system, just a bit leaky door on woodstove that caused us to use more firewood than expected.

Property is for the most part, very well kept and equipped. Only negative is that the patio screen was off the rails and we weren't able to fix it. Had to put it in place and use the door through the screen room to access the deck. But other than that, the place was perfect.

Great place to get away for a week

The rental was just as described. It was very quiet and out of the way with great access to 20 - 30 lakes. If you are planning on bringing your boat make sure that you pack 150' of extension cord because the electrical outlet at the dock does not work.
