Overview

About the property

2 bedrooms, large screen porch close to the lake, sleeps 6.

This lakefront cottage is 2.3 miles from Rt.125 on Swains Lake in Barrington, NH, on our private dirt road into a wooded, 5-acre lot with a wide shore frontage. Our property's back woods extends uphill to Beauty Hill Road. We emphasize Secluded, rare on this lake. The cottage porch is only 30 feet from the lake's high water line. Many maples envelope open areas surrounding the cottage.

Tall pines welcome the greening of the maples in Spring, seeing the last of the melting snow and lake ice. Barn swallows appear as the grounds start to dry and the woods all around turn into forest green.

Swains Lake is over 550 acres with swimming, boating and bass fishing. Our cottage is located along the east side of a cove, facing more west to the sunsets, so waters are calmer than near the main lake bodies.

The cottage is a quaint at 600 sq. ft. with an additional rough-cut wood full-front 260 sq. ft. screened porch overlooking the lake, providing a wonderful area for open-air dining and relaxing. Listen to the bull frogs during their June mating season and the loons on any summer night.

Enjoy the lakefront from morning to night in lawn chairs around the fire pit. There is plenty of fallen deadwood in the back property to use for firewood. We obtain a town fire permit each year and post it inside the cottage.

Throughout the summer, the lake level slowly drops, more areas of natural sand from eroded granite minerals appear on the shore. Look for a purple layer in the sand where the wave ripples lap the shore, that is garnet.

As Fall approaches, the mornings become crisp and with less activity on the lake passing Labor Day. Slowly, the maple's leaves get ready to turn their Autumn colors, and throughout most of October they turn brilliant. Our part of the lake is typically more quiet anyway but it becomes a wonderland of total peacefulness among the colors of the season and the slowly falling of the leaves in calm or shifting winds.

We have wonderful birds that make their home on the lake. You may hear and see loons, and see herons with their long legs flying and dark necks in the water, they the can swim under water a long way before reappearing. We also have exciting eagle sightings though more rare.

There are ducks and some geese on the lake. They are fun to watch but we ask that you don't feed them, feeding them may make them want to come onto the beach area and they can leave a mess behind.

The cottage is fully furnished with two bedrooms and one half-bathroom with a sink and shower, no tub. The living room connects to the dining/kitchen area which has a refrigerator/freezer, electric stove/oven, and a microwave. The master bedroom has a queen-size bed, the other bedroom has sturdy twin-sized bunk beds, and the living room has a picture widow and a sofa that pulls out to a queen-sized sleeper.

Pets are welcome, no deposit is required.

Reservations are taken for May through end of October. We advise you to reserve available weeks as soon as possible up to a year in advance.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Walk through cottage, each room and porch with guest. Accepted cottage no complaints. Guest stayed for 16 days. Before they arrived had a bad wind storm. Mother nature brought in floating weeds and made a tear on porch screen. I stated I would repair tear, guest said it was OK they would fix it. I leave bug spray in pantry. Pillows are cleaned and rotated. Extra pillows are in bedroom closet. I don't advertise that a boat is available for guest.

A beautiful lakeside cottage! 5 stars!!

  • 3 of 5

We enjoyed a wonderful 4 days of fishing on the lake! The bass fishing was great and its an amazing lake to fish, all types of cover for the bass, The view was beautiful and the daily sighting of the Bald Eagle fishing made it even more special! Falling asleep to the crys of the loons was great and we even had a red fox sneak thru the property early one morning! The large screened in porch provided a great lake breeze every day and bug free dining. Everything you could possibly need is a short drive away making this an ideal location. Swains lake is on of the better bass lakes in the area and Harriet has a convienient location adjacent to the boat ramp, Everything was exactly as listed and Harriet was a pleasure to deal with. I would reccomend this place to anyone. We had a great vacation here!

A very nice lakeside cottage with beautiful view! The screened in porch provided a beautiful breeze and kept any bugs away! The fishing on the lake was great and we caught lots of bass! The daily sightings of the bald eagle fishing was a sight to see! and falling asleep to the crys of the loons at night made it special too! We even had a red fox stroll by the front door one morning! Great location with everything you could need within a 10 Min drive. The place was just as described and the Owner was very accomidating. I would reccomend this place highly. And if you like bass fishing this is one of the best lakes in the area.

Girl's Week #2 at this location

  • 4 of 5

BFF & I, with our daughters, agreed to go back to Harriet's Cottage for another girl's week. We had rented a week in 2009, loved the location & the waterfront access.Great lake for swimming, kayaking, floating!Although we knew the cottage was small & needs some updating, we are all about the condition of the lake & we were not disappointed.Last year we tried another location & who's house was spacious & beautiful, but was a hike, down a hill, to the lake weed filled lake.We love Swain Lake & Harriet has a nice private lakefront area. Thanks for your hospitality Harriet, & we didn't lose the TV remote!

Our wonderful vacation

  • 5 of 5

The moment we arrived, Harriet was so welcomed and we all appreciated it. My two small grandchildren immediately jumped in the lake. The cottage was ideal for us. So very private but close to everything. We had a family reunion on sunday and everyone remarked what a perfect place and i do agree. i would definitely consider coming back next summer...so quiet and peaceful. Thank you Harriet for the wonderful vacation cottage.

Swains Lake offers bass fishing, boating/kayaking, and swimming. There is a boat ramp at the northern end of our cove for larger boats. We have a dock to secure boats and to simply jump into the lake.

We definitely recommend visiting Calef's Country Store (at the intersection of Rt.9/Rt.125) for freshly-made donuts and bread in the morning, locally made cheeses like Rat Trap, various grades of maple syrup other local goods. And absolutely visit the Elf-Made and County Kitchen stores on either side of Calef's, and George Calef Fine Foods right across Rt 125 from there for get steaks. The Christmas Dove gift shop is also close by just west on Rt.9.

Convenient gas stations are close by at the Rt.125/Rt.9 intersection and at Lee traffic circle.

A shopping center for anything you need is located only 3 miles heading south at the Rt.125/Rt.4 Lee traffic circle with a Market Basket grocery store, state liquor store, Walgreens, Aubuchon Hardware, movie and game rental store, and other small shops.

Also on Rt.125 between Beauty Hill Rd and Rt.9 is Kozy's Pizza (great subs) and BarnZ Cinema. Local dining for seafood and home-style cooking can also can be found close by on Rt.125 as well.

If you like antiquing, head down and go west from Lee traffic circle on Rt.4, this stretch of road is known as "Antique Alley" where you can find numerous antique shops.

In the Fall for New England’s foliage, enjoy our property which is covered with mostly maples and some oaks, with greenery from very tall pines full of pinecones at their tops!
