Town: The pretty village of Poolewe sits in the shelter of Loch Ewe, at the mouth of the River Ewe where it tumbles down from Loch Maree. It is a pretty place in an area of spectacular scenery and is home to a well-stocked shop, small swimming pool and two hotels. The world-renowned Inverewe Garden (National Trust for Scotland) is half a mile across the bay from the village. The site was developed by the botanist Osgood Mackenzie from 1862 until his death in 1922. Warmed by the Gulf Stream, it is home to exotic plants, imported from all over the world – a must for all visitors to the area. Firemore beach is five miles to the west and north along the coast is Gruinard Bay with its striking sands; a series of attractive beaches skirt the bay and a number are easily reached from the main road. With spectacular scenery, mountains, excellent hillwalking, golf, fishing, wildlife cruises and much more, this is a great area for a holiday!
