Region: Kent is affectionately known as the Garden of England. Its history and heritage provide the region with a rich array of sightseeing possibilities, while the stunning choice of Blue Flag beaches offer the chance to enjoy the beautiful coastline.
Town: Greatstone-on-Sea is a coastal village sandwiched between Littlestone and Dungeness. Part of the historic Kent coast-line, Greatstone has long been a popular haunt for those who love the sea, sand and all that it brings with it. The sandy beach at Greatstone is quite flat and stretches from south to north for over two miles, and is frequently 'washed' by the tide of the English Channel. Greatstone beach has long drawn holidaymakers from far and wide. It provides safe sea bathing in the haven of Romney Bay so is a perfect place for families with young children and with miles of fine sand you can build all the castles you want! However it is due to the sea breezes along the beach in Greatstone, together with the flat sandy beach without break-waters, that makes the beach popular with a whole range of sports that use the wind. You will find kite surfers on the sea and kite flying, kite boarding, kite buggys and land yachting and horse-riders on the beach. Greatstone is said to be one of the finest land yachting sites in the UK. Wind-surfing and sailing are also prevalent along the coastline, so if sea, sand or sail sit high on your holiday list, look no further. Greatstone is also a perfect place to have a vacation if you like walking, cycling, birdwatching or just enjoying nature. Greatstone Lakes are located in the Dungeness National Nature Reserve and are located to the west of the village. There are two large lakes nearby offering a beautiful water-based wildlife habitat, covering an area of approximately 25 acres, attracting birds, fauna and flora. The area around the lakes is especially popular with walkers, bird watchers and wildlife enthusiasts alike. While exploring this part of Kent why not take some time to visit Dungeness where locally-caught fresh fish can be bought. Said to offer "perfect light" and where artists galleries are scattered between the lighthouse and the narrow gauge railway line, which is operated by the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway. So much to offer and so much to see, Greatstone has been a holiday gem in a hidden crown and now can show itself in all it's glory.
