The Neighborhood:
You’ll be staying in Oud Ade, a village in South Holland within the municipality of Kaag en Braassem. It’s a water-rich region with lakes, canals and polders. From here, you can take to the water at the Kagerplassen or the Braassemermeer, ideal for sailing, stand-up paddleboarding or a trip in a sloop. Prefer to stay on dry land? Then walk or cycle along quiet dykes and polder roads towards Warmond and Kaageiland. Katwijk beach is a 20-minute drive away.
Places worth visiting include Leiden with its historic centre, around 8 km away. Warmond is approximately 4 km away, Kaageiland 6 km and Roelofarendsveen about 7 km.
Other Things to Note:
Head out on the water: rent a sloep at Sloepverhuur Warmond, cruise the Kagerplassen and moor at Kaag for lunch at Tante Kee. With the Buitenkaag–Kaag ferry it’s easy to make a cycling loop.
Plan an afternoon in Leiden. At Naturalis Biodiversity Center you’ll come face to face with T. rex Trix, then walk via the Pieterskwartier to the Saturday market on the Nieuwe Rijn for fresh kibbeling and great cheese.
With kids, Vogelpark Avifauna in Alphen aan den Rijn makes a lovely day. Catch the feeding talks and let them loose in the big playground; in season there’s also a boat tour with Rederij Avifauna.
